View Full Version : Which effects unit?
TC Electronics or Lexicon?
I understand that the lexicons are meant to be really transparent and lush, while the TCE stuff is warm thick and lush.
Which one should I go for? I want both: argh :)
Its a toss up between a FireworX and a MPX550, I think. I can't really find a mid-range TCE device that does yummy delay and reverb, with some extra's.
Which one?

I should add that I do psycheledic ambient and trance. So I love drones and whatnot, but also lots of lovely crazy leads.
Which is why choosing between both is tricky, sometimes I want lush thick warm delays, sometimes I want transparently wavering reverbs. Hmm.
I'm looking for the sort of reverb/delay you just loose yourself in. Shpongle likes to do it with whispers, Namlook likes to have huge analogue delay on basses... Hmm.

Holy jesus, the FireworX is $2.1k+, more than my Virus!
Any other recommendations of TC equipment?

I've got the TC Electronic M one XL and I like it pretty well. It costs about $400.00 U.S. I't not bad for a fairly low cost unit. Decent reverbs and it has the usual delays and chorus; flange; pitch-shift; parametric EQ; compressor/limiter; gate/expander; de-esser; tremolo; and phaser. You can run two effects in parallell or series which is usefull if you are multitracking (you can run two different reverbs at once for example).
Anyway, here's a review from Sound on Sound Magazine 2002:

There are better units but they will flatten your wallet more :o

I have the Mpx550 and the sound is incredible considering the cost. For psychedellic trance you can't go wrong with this unit! I prefer the TC Electronic interface (I have a triple C) but the sound of the Lexicon will certainly suit your mucial style!
Very interesting.
If its not too much to ask, could you post some examples of some Virus sequences through it, with wet/dry results? I'd be extremely grateful for that

Sure I will Saba, just send me a sequence and I'll get the Virus playing through the Lexicon for you.
Should be fun.

Saba,
Here you go fella. Here are some samples for ya.
http://home.ripway.com/2003-12/46423/LexiconPresets.zip
I started off with a well known riff dry using the virus patch called "Not Easy SV" and applied effects through the Lexicon. Each patch name is in the filename in the format:
EFFECT TYPE - PATCH NUMBER, PATCH NAME.mp3
Probably shouldn't say this as I guess I am about to give myself loads more work to do but I also have the TC Electroinics Powercore! This has Megaverb and Classic verb based on algorithms from the hardware reverb units. If you need samples of this in action (although it is not the unit you are talking about) then let me know. It will not be possible until next weekend though.
All the best,
Martyn

I would say if u want both go for the lexicon MPX110 and the TC electronics m300...199 each brand new...and i am sure that they have the same engine...u just have to ask yourself...do u need to make some tripped out lead sound like its in the L A colossium...because if u dont need realistic reverb and u just want reverb to work and sound nice...then go for the cheaper...because i truely believe that the lower products r just missing tweakability...and maybe a tad of sound...but its reverb...not a synh, so what does that matter....

Indeed, thats what I was considering. Its a difficult decision, though. I'm leaning towards the TC electronic units, but I need to decide if the M-One XL is more suited than the M300. Hmm.
Since I don't see myself getting a FireworX in the future, as much as I would like, I might get the one which is the next step down. Hmm.
martynreid, I've been very busy recently so I'll get back to this thread soon.

You didn't as far as I'm concerned! I have never had the chance to play around with those units, so listening to what they can do was interesting for me! Thanks.
