most of my studio pics are up at http://www.vdp333.com/studio as well as the current gear list and a picture of the misses, who made the room look so nice by her paintings all over the wall.
As far as tunes, I'll post some here in a bit, I'm actually in process of going into serious recording mode again with a new band and so I'll be promoting that soon enough. I think the only thing currently available online is the extended mix of the last single at http://www.vdp333.com/media/transhuman-remix.mp3

i am still not satisfied with this arrangement, i will move things around again, the virus is far from the keyb and i can't play and tweak at the same time! the best place for the virus i think, is between the keyboard and the screen, i also have to put the monitors a little higher and horizontally.

Someone here had posted pictures of their own home made racks. Not sure who a lot of the links no longer exist. They where big wooden frames that could be stacked I think.
I am planning on making my own but was wondering where they got the(excuse my description) L shape brackets that they screwed to the sides of the frame that the rack kit could be screwed into? Anyone got any ideas, Maplin or studio spares maybe? What's the technical name for these things?
Thanks again everyone.

Hey guys......love the photos......but im concerned.
I see alot of cheap freebie red/white cables hooked upto your gear. Shite cable really reduces the detail/clarity of sounds..... + it makes things sounds a little colder. In short, it reduces the dynamics. If youve invested heavily in a Virus (or other expensive synth) then do yourself and your recordings a favour and get decent cable.
*Ideally you want to get cable that has gold plated plugs, uses high grade copper and is sheilded. Expect to pay a minimum of ?40 for 2 twenty foot runs. Its worth the added investment......you can thank me l8r.

Im very interested to know what you think about the new Voyager. Do you have any past analog experience to compare it with? I myself have used the SCI Pro-One and Korg Mono-Poly as monosynths. I actually think the Jupiter 8 throws out excellant bass aswell (Very warm and deep.....but a little slow). So does the Voyager sound similar to a Minimoog? Or does it have a different character altogether?
Thx

I program with an editor on the PC. The editor is very fast and easy to use, so it's no problem.
As for using opening the cutoff, it's possible to use the Alpha dial with-out holding a button.

It's a pretty-much identical sound to the Minimoog I'm told - but with the extra features.

(couple of things to add - no, i wont have my pc tower on my desk; i havent decided on my soundcard yet but the latest esi looks nice for the pic; yes there is a piece of behringer equipment in there but no audio signal will pass through it.... )
pc will be on its way as soon as i sell this damn mac (sorry jasedee), and the virus will get here when access makes an OS for it [/url]
yes there is a piece of behringer equipment in there but no audio signal will pass through it
Good thinking, hey don't forget the TI will have a dedicated controller page with heaps of templates for common vsti synths and stuff, you may not even need that Behringer.
Also, check out the RME Fireface 800, the specs for the AD DA and preamps are more than respectable.
ive had my eye on the rme for a while... just whether or not i can get the $$$ together for it
there are a few still in the running: motu 828, presonus firestation, edirol fa-101 - but i know if i buy any of these units i will be comprimising converter quality
i want the bcf2000 as dedicated mixer control, and i dont intend freeing up controllers on the TI to do so - they will be busy already
jasedee
21.11.2004, 11:15 AM
I hear very good things about RME stuff.......
Jasons words of wisdom: Choose your equipment wisely, make sure you only buy what you need, and dont compromise. Cheap gear will give you cheap results, and will end up costing you more.....
eg: You want a Virus cos they are the best, you dont want no stinkin Casio right? Take this attitude and apply to the rest of your studio. Obviously, the 'best' is far from reach for most of us, but there is some decent quality gear out there that doesnt cost an arm/leg, BUT, there is HEAPS of crap out there. try to avoid it!
I hear very good things about RME stuff.......
yep me too mate. its like the upper echelon of my budget's limit....
Jasons words of wisdom: Choose your equipment wisely, make sure you only buy what you need, and dont compromise. Cheap gear will give you cheap results, and will end up costing you more.....
i wholeheartedly agree with this statement jasedee...
when it comes to soundcard/interface the main contenders for me at the moment are the RME 800 fireface and the motu 828mk2. they are the only two with consistently good reviews in the price range i will be looking to buy in. i can currently get an 828 from the states for under $1000aud, so at the moment im finding it hard to justify spending twice that amount to get the RME... but see how i go. (and how many shares i sell between now and then  )
basically my requirements are an interface that has enough inputs to satisfy the virus - both s/pdif and trs (and possibly more synths to be added later  , in the mean time the extra ins would be satisfying my flatmates kb).
i also would like something with some nice phantom powered xlrs to hook up my nt3 (and the nt5's that my flatmate is getting soon).
i want the card to be capable of 192k sampling (purely cause the virus can), and if possible it would be nice to have metering on the front of the thing.
i dont care if the unit doesnt operate in standalone mode - it will only ever be hooked up to my pc in my studio (well in the foreseeable future anyway).
now that access has moved into the whole soundcard/interface arena, perhaps they could identify the need in the market for a sound card to match the TI (i dont intend sending everything through my virus and over usb).
anyways, some more research needs to be done! ill make my decision soon, so any companies with possible new releases should speak now, or forever hold their peace!

you need to upload the pics on to a server (your web host), then reference the location of the pics on the server within your message using url tags (click twice on the url button above the reply box, and place the url within the tags - as described in the html description line)
you can get free web hosting from a number of places
ive got dodgy hosting through netscape mywebpage (20mb hosting for free) - do a google search on 'mywebpage' and you should find it soon enough.
cerat an account - login with oyur password when you get it - go to upload files - self explanatory from there.....
just make sure after you have uploaded the pic that you click on the link within your index page and copy the exact url for inclusion in your message.
and if you still have no luck pm me and ill host it in my server space

The BX8's look sexy!!!! How do you find them???
Blay....I thought the 828 was only 96k???
I have the MOTU 2408mkIII and find it great! I wouldnt want to rely on firewire, I prefer to have a PCI style soundcard with breakout box.....But, I reckon the 828 would be a pretty damn good option. You may need a little mixer (Mackie 1202VLZ) so you can monitor your synths, as well as your main mix from computer

i also would like something with some nice phantom powered xlrs to hook up my nt3 (and the nt5's that my flatmate is getting soon).
I have a pair of NT5's.....damn they are cool mics! You wont do much better in terms of quality/value....under $500 AUD for 2 small diaphragm condensors....Stereo recording was never this easy
I had some problems with moisture in the capsules, but Rode are good with customer service and fixed it quick smart, at no cost to me
You'll love em :)
where do you live jase? im wondering how you had moisture probs and im guessing that you live somewhere with high humidity... ive moved from brisbane to melbourne and my gear is loving me for it
so hopefully we wont have any probs with the nt5's....
its funny you suggested the compact mackie mixers as an option - the vlz series has recently been superceded by the ONYX range - there is a 12 channel version that is very competitvely priced....
....and there is an optional firewire card which allows for simultaneous recording of all seperate channels :D
ive found quotes in the us for the 12 channel version:
$545US($700AUD)
and the card as well:
$399US($510AUD) - seems a little overpriced when the mixer is only $190AUD more.... i guess mackie figure most people who buy the mixers will want the card as well - then price it accordingly :?
still, im very interested to see some reviews on this product - could be my solution jasedee :D

Hmmm......Onyx?
I dunno.....seems a bit unnecessary to me. It all depends what you will be using the mixer for. I bought a 1402VLZ and realise now it is far too big for what I need it for. I only use the stereo line channels for monitoring my synths, and the control room outputs for controlling level to my monitors.
If you already have a soundcard, as well as Ti USB, why the f*** do you need another 12 channels of firewire??? Especially at that price!!!! Bloody ridiculous. The MOTU 828Mk2 has 8 channels of ADAT anyway, so if you need to you can get something like a behringer ADA8000 or similar product from Mackie or presonus, or focusrite etc...8 channels of mic preamp via ADAT into the 828mk2.....plu if you have a small 1202, you got another 4 preamps, direct out to the 828 analogue ins. Thats a whole lotta I/O
Think hard about exactly what you will need a mixer for, and if you even need one (Mackies Big Knob looks cool), and then choose an appropriate size
well lets see...
currently i personally dont have a decent sound card - im using a powerbook with dodgy onboard sound... the lappy is going soon so take that out of the equation.
my flatmate and i are slowly piecing together a project studio:
-amd2800/audiophile2496
-g4800 powerbook/(dodgy onboard as mentioned before)
-tapco s8 monitors
-crap behringer mixer that i dont want to talk about
-virus kb
-novation basstation
-mc505
-vestax pmc-50
-rode nt3
-matador congas
-african perc djembe
-sl1200x2 + cdj500s
i wasnt talking about getting this as well as the 828 - i meant INSTEAD OF. depending on which of the onyx i might purchase, it could take the outputs of the kb, the ti and the basstation, as well as making use of the phantom xlr's for the nt3/(eventually nt5s as well) - and sending it all seperately over the firewire card for processing within the PC.....
is that so over the top? mate if i dont have to spend the money i wont - like you say you have to seriously think about the application for the hardware that you buy.... and im trying to allow for a couple of future purchases.
the only thing the onyx lacks is s/pdif in/out :?

DS
Thanx. Nice to hear that you liked the mp3's. :)
The reason why I want to use more software is that I like to work with them and it's great that when I open my earlier project, everything is up and running within seconds. I don't have to setup all my external gear, search for right patches and settings for every channel. Of course these settings could be sent via midi but I don't like to work that way. I always store my patches to the synths not to the sequencer with midi dumps.
I still don't use that many softsynths because they're not all good but I like the plugins which come with logic pro and a few others. Logic's plugins are of very high quality (most of the effects too). I specially use the ES2 for many sounds like basslines, some arps and secondary leads and effects. The most important sounds still come from hardware and from dsp powered synth plugins like Virus Powercore (I have the unlimited license) and Powercore01 synth. I'm also waiting for the V-Station Powercore. Basically it's a direct K-Station code with additional multi-mode filter. The K-Station uses the same standard motorola chips than the powercore so it's easy to import to powercore platform as was the Virus. TC Powercore has also been very important in my production. I can't live without those reverbs. There are also very many other high quality plugins available for it.
Virus is the most important digital synth for me. I use the leads and pads alot. I earlier had a Virus B and then a Virus KC. However I wanted to go on with the virus plugin and sold the KC (I still hate that I sold it  ).
I have had many other digital and analog synths too but what is left in the rack are the Novation Super Bass-station and Waldorf Pulse. I like them both very much. Little beasts what come to the sound! I also miss many other synths which I have sold. I may have to buy a JP80x0 again and maybe a nord rack2 too. But I want to keep my setup as compact as possible and connect every synth directly to the computer's audio interface that I can use software effects for the external synths too.
And yes, I get very many good sounds out of andromeda and the others but I also get more multitimbrality with software. I can make many not that important sounds with software. Sometimes I also get very interesting results by using the logic's own effects without much thinking.
Virus TI sure is interesting but I want to see it in action before I'd buy it. :)

Well, I've had my sister-in-law in my house for the last two weeks and she took over my office/studio to work on her doctoral dissertation. She's leaving tomorrow morning at 4am and I've finally cleaned all of her crap off of my laptop and, to celebrate, I'm going to post studio pics.
I'm a bit self conscious because my gear isn't very exotic and I'm a rank hobbyist, and -- worse yet -- I have little flowers on my wallpaper, but here goes:

Nice looking setup there MC. How do you find the Z8 out of interest?
Well, it's a sampler. It can be switched to 96khz, but I don't bother. 64 voices, 512MB RAM, and a 60GB HD. The USB interface and their utility lets you (basically) drag-n-drop .WAV files to the device -- .WAV is its native format -- though it doesn't mount the hard drive directly.
Their PC utility allows for easy on-screen editing of multis, assignments of samples, effects, etc., but the front panel is tolerable. I use its front-panel USB jack to power my MDP16, and you can stuff a usb mass storage device inside and face it out the back (zip or jaz drive, etc.).
The stock Z8 effects are good, very clean. Not the slightest hint of grunge, which isn't for everyone. The filters are pretty strong. The faceplate detaches and the unit comes with a cable so you could remote-mount it. The controls don't feel very manly, but they haven't puked yet.
Other than a lot of capacity, it's a pretty utilitarian unit.
It's strengths are that it is an effective, durable outboard sample playback and (quite especially. with a 60GB HD) librarian device. Supposedly, streaming of samples from the HD is/was to come as an update, but the Akai organization in the states is a mess right now and it may not happen.
It has a sequencer, of sorts. It might as well not have.
The only thing that gets under my skin about it is that the midi-to-program assignments in multis are kind of a pest to adjust when you are trying to experiment a bunch with sequences running, etc.

That is defenitely the truth. I've known many to have 2,3,4 or more synths or hardware gear and still not have completed a song. I find that limiting myself in writing my songs goes over well. For instance, I will only write in logic, using its own plugins and thats it. It also helps you get to know your gear better too.

Forgot to tell that the Korg Legacy Collection is also a part of our studio and the MS20 controller looks really nice (got to place new photos ;) ).
The Varios8 (jup/jun emulation) is a very nice (soft?)synth.
I don't know how it performs compared with a Jupiter 8 since I never touched a real jupiter. However I happen to like the Varios emulation a lot. The only thing I miss is self oscillation.
About other applications on the Varios.
On this moment there are several available.
First there are the Varios 8 and the Varios 303 (tb 303 emulation).
They are completely free and they do a good job on what they suppose to do.
Then we have the commercial applications that are available.
There are 2 of them, VC-1 and VC-2.
The VC-1 is a Complete D50 on a PC-card. It comes complete with a computer based editor and that works fine. It also comes with 384 preset patches, 512 user patches and 28 new waveforms.
For sound examples http://www.roland.com/products/en/VC-1/demos.html
The other application is the VC-2 Vocal designer.
A demo can be found at harmony central http://trio.harmony-central.com/ramgen/WNAMM05/Roland-VC-2.rm
Sure I hope there will be more and interesting applications for the Varios, but so far I am pretty happy with my Varios.

Hey Bro!
I dig your studio.
It has a very cool vibe to it.
The mesh of wooden blinds, red walls, white trim, plants, gear galore, and militant carpenter desk all come together in a really uniques way.
The disco ball kicks ass!
It has reminded me to go get one for my garage where all my gear is.
I will be posting pictures of it soon.
I just have to throw together some monitor stands, hang a mirror, and get the disco ball and the Alex studio is good to go.

Looks like a creative environment! I have a few weeks off from Uni atm and I think my studio needs a makeover
Thick curtains for the windows, and foam panels and a fresh coat of paint for the main wall. Also started soldering multi-core to tidy the place up a bit.
Will post pics of my work in progress...
thanks jase...
that pic is taken from the messy/storage end of the room so it looks a lot neater than it actually is. im lucky to have a really long room (but unfortunately it is the only room that doesnt have a central heating duct - hence the beanie). It is only a rental property so all the foam you see around the walls had to be 'framed' then hung from nails and existing blinds.
I look forward to seeing you studio mods jase...

Yeah there really is no need for lighting with a couple of lcds hanging about. In addition to the 17" lcd and the 15" powerbook you see in the photo, I have another 17" lcd which I run dual off the powerbook (it is currently on loan to a friend), and my housemate just bought himself a 15.4" pc lappy - so all up we have two 17" and two 15" lcds...

To be honest the prophecy is something I'm wanting to replace. Not because it's sh*t, just because it's something that is on load to me and came without the manual. I can't find the manual on any websites so never got my head round it.
The presets are pretty good, quite dated now though. Just wish I could use it to it's potential.

[Korg Prophecy Parameter Guide - 12.8mb (http://www.ijot.com/prophecy/prophecy_manual.pdf)]
I have the 6-voice Moss (Z1) board for my Trinity and find it to be very transparent. A good compliment to the characteristic and very unmistakable 'Virus' sound. I just really wished Korg made a successor to the Z1 as the basic sound is absolutely rock solid and very flexible - and I absolutely love the idea of the Physical Modelling and VA hybrid, a great concept - but I guess the Z1/moss sounds would pale a tad when compared to something like the Clavia G2 now.
The OASYS-PCI board (not to be mistaken with the new OASYS workstation) was a big step up from the Z1 as it has more DSP for greater realism and power, and included even more physical models when compared with the Z1, but the problem is only Windows98se is supported as the OASYS-PCI has been discontinued for a good while. The sound quality is ace from what I've heard, though, so I'm even considering buying one off ebay and then grabbing an older computer to run it on standalone!
Otherwise, I really hope Korg make some spin-offs from their new OASYS workstation, like a hardcore standalone synth (like a Z2) which does away with all the other unneeded OASYS frills. I know that Korg will add physical modelling to their OASYS workstation at some point, as they're reknowned for the time, money and effort they've pumped into R&D on physical modelling over the last couple of decades, so I just hope it does splinter off into a new dedicated synth.
COME ON KORG!
Back to the Prophecy, I heard that because it's a monophonic synth they dedicated more DSP to that single voice on the Prophecy than they did for each voice on the 6-voice Z1, thus the Prophecy is deemed to have a richer and more powerful sound when both compared in monophonic mode. The Z1 just adds polyphony/multitimbrality and a few more physical model algorithms.
There's some nice demos of the Prophecy here:

I have a B because I could get it for so much less than I could get a C. There isn't enough difference between them to warrant an immediate upgrade IMO. I might even keep my B when I can finally afford to get a TI because I believe they will be completely different sounding machines

These are cdj800s, got em for ?250 each from USA, they go for about ?450 here so made a bloody good saving.

Ten, everytime I see a picture of your computer, I immediately think - I must build something similar asap! You must have some serious fun with your setup. :)
Indeed :) It took a fair time to get it all together but was well worth the time, effort and money invested. Having the freedom to load as many tracks, plugins or vstis as you wish at very low latencies with no fear of the machine crapping out, or cpu meters getting to high, or bouncing/freezing shit to audio is very nice and really helped my productivity.

btw,are thos the dynaudio bm5?

As Tomer said, Nuendo3.1 and SX3.1 both take advantedge of dual core cpus and dual cpus, so they both work in effect with quad cpus........like i have

i heard with some dual cores when you use both cpus intencly the sequencer crash,is that true?
MADSTATION
14.09.2005, 07:09 PM
Tomer=Trance: Well it happens even with only 1 cpu you know ;)
Use 100% of your cpu and the application will become highly unresponsive. I don't know about dualcore but I believe that any system that you push to its limits will have a hard time dealing with that.
At the moment I'm in the process of deciding either I get a setup similar to Ten's or I still wait for TI...
I'm so sick of running out of cpu...Especially since these days I do EVERYTHING with vsts even tho I have quite a few synths around :)
Tomer, no crashes on this system. Absolutely ROCK solid in all it does. Havent heard of others with dual dualcores having crashes with sx or nuendo either though.

it's like with the SH2 and the SH1, the SH1 is the small brother of the SH2 and the SH5 is the small ones of the SH7. The SH7 is the flagship of the old SH series ... it is the most "modular" one and sounds amazing (but has only two VCOs like the SH2)
yeah ... i appreciate, analog drummies are a must ! When i got my 909 i set up for two days (and nights, of course) ... just programming patterns all the time, until the memory limit had been reached :D
it's so great for live use ... tuning and modulating the instruments, and if you use an external sequencer to control it you can play very tricky songs (witch could never be done with the internal sequencer)

Yeah...Studer is most famous for analogue multi-track machines...
I have seen some Studer 169 consoles 2nd hand floating about, but Im sure most would need alot of work and maintenance.
The one I bought had just recently been re-capped, and the original faders were replaced with higher quality Penny&Giles.
Still...I need to do some work to the console as the right side of the master section has just fucked out. There was some DC leaking, probably from a dirty capacitor, and now the right VU meter is completely dead. Hopefully it is just a problem with the meter bridge, and not with the master section!
The preamps in the Studer are somewhere between Neve and SSL. Not as coloured as Neve, not as clean as SSL. The EQ's are gorgeous! Definately the best thing I have ever bought

I've been looking for an SH2 just too - I think they are real keepers. Juno-60s go for dirt cheap here, so I was thinking of grabbing one for a try (not sure though). As far as the matrix goes...be careful as the voice chips can fail, so buying can be a little risky (although buying a few alows you to layer the voices by conecting them up).
I now have a shop lined up in Ausi for analogue consignments, so from a few days ago on (got ADSL connected at home) I have been searching the auctions. I love getting this stuff to try out, sample, then pass it on for a profit! :D

right - you're very lucky if you can find one ... they're extremly rare, and the ones in good conditions are very expencive

True about being rare, but they never sell for that much over here though. The most expensive ones I see go for about $450us (and that's in the shops - I know where there's 2 in Tokyo at the moment). If you look on the auctions you can get them much cheaper.
Ahh Japan.

the price also depends on the age ... you'll have to look out for one of the later SH2 editions, the first production series had extremley unstable oscilators ... and it sometimes takes for about an hour until you can use them. I had luck, my one powers up and is usable within 30 seconds.
