What is the best audio software around? I think I'd like to work with audio as opposed to midi. So what I need is a piece of software that allows me to edit audio (from my synths and drum machines) and make them into pro quality songs.
Any suggestions...
thx
DS
Arguably the best:

In terms of audio editing, pro tools is really easy to discount, but pretty hard to beat...

Im looking to buy audio sequencing software of professinal quality. I dont want to make songs using midi. I just cant stand midi.
lol

Indeed, neither can I, but such is life.
I'm giving some major serious thought to Ableton's Live. The demo is pretty damn amazing.

Arghghhh. What are you saying
Midi is a great peice of technology. Its worth the time and effort trying to understand.
Can i ask what sequencer you have been using?
If your intent on going all audio then i`d say abelton live aswell. If you have the cash then go with protools.

I'm with Tommy on this one!
I honestly don't know what you are on about DS. Even if you sequence with audio samples, you are still going to have to record the audio in the first place. Without sequencing in midi first, you will have to play everypart live! If you are making dark slow ambient music this may not be a problem, but if you are making faster tempo dance (like many other people seem to be) then you will be better off to sequence before recording the audio (specially the drums - unless using loops).
I think the loop based mixing culture has caused a midi ignorance.
I play everything live..
or maybe not, i use my mouse for everything - velocity as well as pan + filter-tweaks..
but what i've heard ableton live is a great program, a friend of mine uses it when he plays live.. but on the other hand he writes electro with only analouge gear (using alot of Cv/Gate) + he never goes over a bpm around 120

OK, is there a midi book for dummies that I can buy? Not only do I have to cope with tha ambiguity of using midi as part of cubase....but also setting the synth up midi wise...oh god its my nitemare!
I should invest more time in learning midi......
I'll try again

midi is not hard at all DS! the virus is very simple to "set up" for midi use, just spend one day trying things around and you'll see how easy it is, and think about all the advantages it offers to you (automation, note/velo correction instead of re-recording, dumps, sync, easy remixing...). And as tommy said, it is all about the sequencer you are using! SX and SX2 offer an easy way to work with midi! and don't think that you have to use only midi, you can keep recording some parts live if you really like it, but try mixing both! that might help you gain time.

DS i have some pdf books on sequencers and midi. I can send them to you if you like. They come in very handy.

Perhaps I should upgrade from Cubase Vst 5.1 to SX? Will that make midi any easier?
What I really need to know is how u write tracks using midi. It seems very weird to me. Do u guys play notes in....then once in...u edit them (i.e. cut/paste/loop/quantise/change-note-length.......perhaps even change notes and octaves). It seems a very time consuming process.
For example...if u wanted to do a simple four note arpegio....do u drop the notes in using ur mouse button...then play around with it. It amazes me that peopel can make complex trance music using midi. It must taking fuking yrs to do. Heheh
Ill learn one day!

i took the worst case :) i am a bit pessimistic sometimes
DS: YES upgrade. There is no comparison to make between 5.1 and SX/SX2 for midi.
As far as your apreggios go, u can enable recording on your midi track and play your four notes arpeg live. Hit stop, and you'll find the notes you played in the sequencer. Then you can do what u want with them... copy, paste, note length...
And you can also open your sequencer and put your notes directly there without live recording. Thats what i do since i am not a big keyb player :)

I really don't understand why people are using cars because cars are really time consuming! I've been using horse carts for years and it's the best way to move. I wonder how does cars can even exist anymore. You have to struggle with doors and seat belts. Also there's gasoline, oil and mainetance issues! It's insane that people use cars! I just hop in my horse cart and off I go.
Edit: And I thought Jethro Tull was living in the past.
Edit 2: I wonder which one takes more time:
1. Playing a part to MIDI and then fixing the bumnotes and adding some quantizise. Probably try out to move tha part up and down few octaves.
or
2. Playing a part to audio. Noticing some bumnotes and recording again. Then thinking this could sound a bit better octave higher and playing the part again. Then deciding that the last note could be better to be E flat than G. Recording again. To make this part simple I'm not taking any manual filtersweeps and other modulation in this example.
MIDI is the ultimate tool for electronic music production! Not using MIDI is like driving around with a horse cart instead of a car.

Umm, I use VST32 5.0 and it works excactly the same way Hatembr. Maybe you mean something else?
Once you have midi all worked out DS you will be surprised with the flexibility. Recording to audio straight away kind of sets the sound in stone, but having everything midi first lets you edit the sound for the final recording.
Plus when you record to audio straight away it's difficult to turn lots of knobs as you play isn't it. Well, midi lets you record all knob turns one at a time.
Good luck DS! :)

yes, i was talking about how easy the automation is, preset curves, note editing is more precise than 5.1, inserts..... it's well orgnized, better than the 5.1 i think...

I think the GUI on Sx/Nuendo plays a large part in it being easier to use than Vst.
I`d say to you Ds download SX 2 demo and try that out. Things are alot easier to set up and do than vst version.
