Has anyone on here heard this thing? For 90 bucks you get a plug in VST soft synth that sounds unreal!. Could there be a day where our beloved Virus gets replaced by a soft synth? :(

Will a softie take the place of my Virus?
No, not unless I build another computer specifically to be used for one soft synth with a seperate controller (with knobs a plenty), inputs and outputs. Also the soft synth would have to be very special indeed, and the computer would have to have the latest in DSP technology.
I've seen this soft-synth before, heard that it sounds great also - but i dont know, if i had a Virus i would probably not exchange that for a software-synth..
I really like the hardware.. if i had the money i would build a synthesizer around a hardware sequencer like Roland MV-8000 (which i am intending to) esp. after some rumours i've heard about the OS2.0 update.

For me, a 'synth' is not just about sound....its also about having something you can stand behind and 'play'.
I will probably never trully regard computer based softsynths as a viable alternative!

IMHO I dont think Refx Vanguard sound that good. But again I dont care my virus dont become bad just because it comes "better" products..

This softsynth didnt sound particularly special in my opinion. Sounded flat and way too thin for my taste.
Fuk the soft synths...im going to build my own analog synth using this >>>> http://www.paia.com/p9700s.htm#p9700s
Its the cheapest way of having an analog

I got that one.. but it is fucked up right now.. i probably toasted some of the parts in it while modifieing it..
It sounds so nice when its working properly.. but sometime the filter leaks thru unfortantly..

do i need any knolage in electricity to build some basic kit like the fatman
?
because for 150 even if i destroy it or get it to work and sound like a cat it would be a cool project
:D

So whats the score....they provide u with all the parts....and its upto u to solder it all together and test the components are working properly together??
What tools do u need to make this??

Thoretically no, but knowledge doesn't hurt if (when) you have trouble with the project.

I think the components are tested before they are sent. They provide you the PCB and the components and you just solder them.

A soldering iron of course and basic multimeter is a must have (oscilloscope would be ideal).

where can i get one?

Yeah, I bought mine of a friend thou - but he never touched it - all the components are there, just gotta solder them togheter. Which is really easy even for a novice since all the things are labeled from 1 up to around (1000) or something like that and you get two papers with instructions + pictures if it gets tricky which it never did..

I got a soldering iron, but not a oscilloscope or anything like that - i'd just put the parts togheter -> tested it, it worked perfect.. after awhile the filter acted up really strange, so i made some minor modifications too it but unfortantly i forgot that i used both a schematics from the internet + one of my own mods to it with the wrong voltage which ended with the thing smelt like burning electronics - and now it's just laying there because i am too lazy to dis-asseble it again and check what the fault is.
Anyways, great synthesizer - really fat basses and lead type of sounds (and funny effects when you patch it up like i use'd to do).

Hi,
I've built the P9700s as well. I have a page about it with pictures and samples over at http://www.unease.se/paiabuild.htm. The building instructions are really clear and easy to follow but it is still a pretty big project.
It sound really good to my ears except for some strange behaviour of the filter with high resonance.

Yes. Probably no need for test equipement for a project that has 100% working components. But still it would be good to have at least some sort of voltage meter just in case. You never know what clumsy soldering with solder bridges do.

Thehee. Now you need the multimeter.

You can get old vintage scopes less than 100 euros. They are old but work perfectly if kept well. New ones tend to cost 1000 euros and more so better to stick in vintage.

All the parts are checked that they are working before they send out the package. So I knew that everything was going to work.

Yeah.. hehe
