I'd be damn skeptical. Any deal that seems too good to be true.... well...

But you never know. People have thier own reasons for selling stuff.

Have you spoken with the person by telephone? By asking a lot of questions quickly, some repeated, you might be able to draw him/her out if they are lying.

Have you verified the sellers name, address and phone number by phone book or internet search?

Can you get the seller to email you a photograph with the day's newspaper or something? (to prove it's theirs)

Has the seller given you a valid reason for using moneygram, rather than the more established paypal? Have you verified moneygram is legit?

Would the seller consider using an escrow service? (you would pay the extra for that.)

Good luck,
Paul

In this kind of cases ih the seller is in a such big hurry he should be glad to make any special arrangements to get the synth sold. So I'd prefer cash on delivery system or you go to fetch the synth personally (if possible).

Hi,

re: escrow - yes. For more info, take a look at this ebay help page:

http://pages.ebay.ca/internationaltrading/buyermngrisks.html

I bought my Yamaha rs7000 from a guy who advertised in Harmony Central. I live in Canada, he was in the States. There was a lot of anxiety for me during the transaction (delays in shipping, poor packaging etc.), but I got it, and it works great! I did get raped on duties though. You might want to look into that too.

Good luck!
Paul

I'd insist on using a reputable international escrow service, and get every conceivable piece of information and details from this guy to locate him and nail him if anything goes wrong, including a landline home phone number (ring him up beforehand to confirm - don't tell him you'll be ringing, and therefore catch him off guard, and then batter him with any questions you have to ascertain his genuineness and authenticity of the deal - ask him about all the shipping details like reputable postal companies and any tracking details that might be employed, and including safe, well-carried out packaging too), official ISP email addresses (as opposed to free hotmail/yahoo ones), home address (ie. no "P.O. box" address), etc.

Timo

$500 USD?! Lol, that's only ?276 Pounds-Sterling, or 400 Euros.

If he really wanted a Voyager (about ?2,000? = 2,900 Euros) he could afford to get a decent price for the alleged Virus C.
$500 is a mere pittance compared to the Voyager's price.

Timo
30.09.2004, 06:54 PM
Blimey, the Voyager is only (the equivalent of) ?1,488 over there in the USA, @ Sweetwater.com. So he's selling the Virus for a 5.5th of the price of a new standard Voyager.
And $500 is just a third of the price of a new Virus C over there, too, which is a bit, err, cheap.

Well besides all this figuring out whether it is legit or not, i can answer this...because i have run into this guy b4...THE GUY IS FULL OF SHIT!!! I took him around for a questioning trip for like 3 weeks just to get his address so that some ppl that were ripped off by him would be able to notify him...honestly i dont believe he is in the US...he has been saying he was in Europe all over the place for about a year or 2...but you will never really find out unless you can hack the dick...

DO NOT BUY FROM ANYONE WITH THAT SKETCHY ADDITUDE...especially if they want to use moneygram...oh and if you ask him to go through escrow he will say i tried many times the site doesnt like me...it wont let me create a profile...

BTW this guy is on sonicstate and harmony and im not sure where else...

better try a local seller where you can just drive to his house pick up the gear and pay him in cash.
that way you know its safe and its working 100%.
it might cost you 300-400 $ more but you know your geting it.
being ripped off is such a dissapoitment and will give you unncecery headachs :)

save yourself a heart attack & just save up & buy from a dealer. I tried the same route & won a redback on ebay for $1,100. The guy could not even give me a picture cause he said he is travelling alot. There are way to many scammers to take this chance unless you have 500 to throw away. Too good to be true. This may be the same guy who tried to scam me. There is nothing you can do about it either it is absolutely buyer beware.

the guy hide himself well so he wont be able to be tracked down.
he used an ebay security falt to send him a fake email as ebay are saying that he has 50k forzen in his acount in case the deal goes wrong.

anyway his fighting ebay to get even some of the money back.

my advice....
avoid it,buy it only if you can accualy touch it when giving the money. :)

Ok, so he says he is so excited because he is going to get the moog voyager, witch is understandable. Also he is scandinavian, and you can usualy trust a scandinavian. But there are of cource crocks here too.
It is too long for me to go to finland from norway, it will take two days, including bout. Each way. And it will be expencive.

Im not shure he is clerly knowing how things work. He insists on using moneygram, but also insist theres no Forex office in his town, Tampere. The only way to get the moneygram is through Forex!! They are the only ones that make them, and the only place to pick them up is at a forex office!!

So I went to Forex about 6 times that day, and spoke to them. In the end the boss there was helping me out, she called the Forex office in Tampere, and got confirmed that, YEP! the office is still located at the same adress, and yep! It is the only way to pick up the moneygram. So they insist i dont send him moneygram, because it is only more expencive. I can just use a cheeper system from scandinavia, no moneygram, just trancefer the money to the office in Tampere, and I got a reference number he can use to pick it up.

So he tries that, and he comes back telling me that their computer system broke down for at least a week, and that I should rather send moneygram, he would pay the extra charge.

....i was getting in the groove with him, but im beginning to be a little unshure...

But though he clearly has not done this before!!

What I will do tomorrow is going to Forex, yet again!! And make them call the office in Tampere, and ask if their computersystem realy is broken down for a week!! It sounds realy strange, but wele see tomorrow!!

So you people that said you know this guy from before, I have his name and adress, maby I shall try to call his family or something? ;-P

Good luck, and don't do anything crazy.

Yeah, wele se tomorrow... i want do anything crazy ;-)

He is pushy because he realy wants to get the moog voyager as fast as possible, or so he says.

It seem he is into psycadelic trance, withch I am too, and in respect of that he seems fairly trustable regarding this sceene is small, and its against this culture, to fuck with karma.

Actualy if hes going to release some music, as he says, with the reputation that he steals monny from other artists in the sceene, he will for shure not get to release a single track, and he want get a single live job.

Reputation spreads fast in a small sceene like this, and people will send around warning mails to all the recordlabels, all the party arangers, and all the musichians.

It is what we call karma, and he seams to know this simple but strong rule in the psy-sceene. He actualy got insulted when I brought it up, which is good. That is the way he should react if he is a true goa/psy freak.

The sceene is that small, and im shure I can find someone that knows him, if he IS deep into psycedelics, as he says.

I thought you said he lived in the states???? And from the emails he lives in europe.....

And, as as far as the whole Forex thing goes....that is dodgy!!!!! He keeps saying that Forex is closed, there is no forex, their computers were down. This sounds real dodgy.

Think about it. This guy has a synth, apparently in perfect working condition, and he is selling at a fraction of the price he could get for it. All because he is desperate for a Moog??? When it comes down to money, people dont ususally want to give it away. If it was for real, he would be trying to sell it for the market price on a used virus.....

Smells fishy!

True, your right, I shall look into this!

Asking price is unreal, ahh.. I was hoping for a real good deal here! But I gues you cant be that lucky!

Still it seams strange he put so much work in to this, though if he used the same energy on selling it, he could get a much better price.

Even ebay says do not send through moneygram, because it is an instant transfer of funds and there is no way for you to make it look like payment for say a synth...How i know its this guy is because he always starts out with damn near perfect spelling and the more he gets closer to his goal the more typos he has, and he always mentions you gunna send it now through moneygram in damn near every email...like i said b4 ask him to go through escrow...he will say it wont let him log in...

Kuninkaankatu 1 as 40 in Tampere? I googled and there's a Finlayson palace on Kuninkaankatu 1 and if he lives there, he lives in a restaurant (no apartments on that block, just a small palace-looking restaurant). Edit: Verified. It is a restaurant.

Also I checked for Keltainen p?rssi (the biggest Finnish sell & buy magazine) and no ads about Virus C. If you want something sold you very likely get a buyer from Ketainen p?rssi (especially with prices that low).

Ask him why he hasn't put any ads on in Finnish media (Keltainen porssi, Huuto.net) and ask him how it feels to live in a restaurant.

Buahahaha! Apartment 40 on that building! HAR-HAR-HAR! That guy is just camp.

Edit 2: Or if he means Kuninkaankatu 40 as 1, then he might live in a real apartment. ?hih. He wrote the address really weirdly. Usually the addresses are wrote like The Street *street number* *apartment number*.

Edit 3: Just checked. Kuninkaankatu 40 is an apartment block. But anyway ask him about why there are no his ads on local media.

Tell him that the guy from your Forex-office confirmed that there is an office near him...

As a rule, I usually get a phone-number and address on the people I deal with. It's cheaper to call someone and confirm that he is in fact the person he claims he is (and easier to track down later), than sending money to someone you have little or no info on. I have only dealed with people from my own country (Denmark), but the procedure still applies to worldwide deals too I think.

But, I must say this guy sounds waaaayyyy to eager to sell this "Virus". Even if he were to buy another synth, the people selling are often willing to hold it for someone for a period of time.

I would get more details from this guy who's obviously lying to you about the Forex-deal to begin with...

Wow, thanks a lot! I just asked for his phone number, because a friend of me said he would come along for a car ride to finland!!

Though it is a far way to meet nobody....It will take the whole day, then sleep on the boat from sweden to finland, and same way back.

Should I mention to him where his adress is? hahah!

When I said im coming over to finland, he just said: as you wish.
Nothing more, no wild spellings... thats the latest ive herd from him.

Before that, I told him he had a bad reputation, but he sayd simply that it was not him!

If he is like Blank said, filling up his studio with stolen gear, from mistreated deals, I should bring some big guys, and beat him up!!!

Help me out here! This is his last mail, AFTER I call him a scammer, and a lier:

Hello! yes i understand everything, about all scares about buying from an internet. I was burned myself before....

No i have all documents, ID, everything. And i know that i have to show them to receive moneygram. And thats why im not scared.
You know as i told put a secret querstion on a transfer. Without it i wont be able to pick up paymnt! and i send you virus, only after that when you receive it you give me secret questions answer. Shipping is not so long - 4 - 5 days. So even if on this deal we are more than 1 week..then waiting more 5 days for me is not a big problem..:(

Sorry i can use esqrow, not because im a scammer or something you are thinking, JUST I DO NOT HAVE A CREDIT card to register on it.

And i never lied you. Yes i work in a restaurant. And live on the same street. And you know visiting me is not a problem, because i live in Tampere and never left it for about 5 years!

P.S and again for conformation of my legit mind - IF YOU ARE SENDING MONEYGRAM TO FINLAND, direction TAMPERE - i will eb able top peick it op ONLY IN FINLAND, IN TAMPERE! So do not think that im somewhere else.

And i do not want that if somebody on the inet does bad business, and if honest people like me want to sell their equipment can be in such situations, when the other side do not trust, ONLY because my prefered method of payment is MONEYGRAM...:((((((((((((

So you can think, i have been answwering all other wmails that Access was sold...so....Please let me know!

Again...Moneygram - POLICe - FBI = great friends. they write down an information from ID...and i do not want to be in prison for money...and for all that stuff....

But Blank. What do you say about his ide here: If I put a pasword on the moneygram, he is not able to get the money, befor he gets that password from me. That means I recive the Virus, test it out, and if everything is fine, then I give him the password. If im not happy with it, I can still get my money back from Forex.

How can this go wrong? Hmmm..

Well, im going to Forex today, to ask about all this!

HAHAH! So I just calld Forex, and they told me they had many complains about moneygrams and scammers!! Also there is no password system! When you get the moneygram, it is yours!!

The last way to maby do it, is that he needs a referance number to get the moneygram. I could give it to him AFTER I recice the package..

He is an obvious scammer! There are not even slightlest doubts. If he want to get rid of a Virus C, why he won't sell it here in Finland? He would get a buyer faster that way and the shipping would be child's play.

You still haven't got the phone number? I'd like to put him on the heat, buahahaha.

Edit: Also ask him why the shipping addres is his workplace and not his home.

Timo

DON'T let him know you knoW! He's had his fun. He was quite willing to try anything to rip off your ass.

Now, try and think of a scam to get him back......

This could be a powerbook special!! Gang, thinking caps on................................

In the interim, just keep stringing him along.......

It's a bit problematic to come up a counter-scam when we are on the buyer side. If we would be selling, the situation would be different.

Maybe we would trade the non-existent Virus for some other non-existent gear?

Edit: Hey. Post him back and say he seems trustworthy. Then ask if he is willing to take something in exchange for his Virus.

Well, just for a laugh, after reading along the lines of the people that have grown wise to the now well-known so-called "419 frauds" (ie. those predominantly Nigerian email scams that tell you that your long lost relative has left you ?25million, lol). Tell the guy that you think "OK, the Moneygram thing is cool", and that you will do the deal!.....

... But only on one condition! ;) In that he should take a clear photo of himself with his virus standing outside the "restaurant" in question (fully in view) in order to verify his authenticity.

Say you wont do the deal otherwise, but say you DO have the money immediately "ready" to send via Moneygram after he complies, and that you're extremely eager to get your hands on the Virus.
See where that gets ya. If he tries to squirm out of it, just re-iterate the "need to see the simple described photo as proof, or otherwise the deal is off", and issue it as an ultimatum.

Might give us more time to think something up, while putting the ball in his court.

---

Or, you could insist that you send him a snail-mail letter via post, to his home address, and get him to scan or photograph the letter once he's received it to show you and therefore authenticate his address.... You might then be able to set something up, or nail the bastard somehow, once you know it.

----

Otherwise, just send him an email with a nice executable "virus", and tell him that the file contains your personal details, or something..... ;)

Sorry I can't think of anything more original. Damn well worth a shot, though. .... Remember you're not the first and most probably not the last he's going to try it on. The next 'buyer' that is preyed on might not be so lucky.

1. Police doesn't involve in any kind of money traffic issues unless the crime hasven't already happened.
2. For a scam of that nature he would only get some day-fines plus he'd have to pay back the scammed sum. If he due some weird reason would get a prison sentence, a Finnish prison is a boarding-house establishment, which means that it's not very bad at all.

He's hilarious. He seems to have moved from Russia in immediate past. That would be the only explanation to his total lack of knowledge and bad Finnish.

http://www.scambuster419.co.uk/moneytransfer.htm

A few ideas there on "transferring" money using Western Union, Moneygram, etc...

If you can get a copy of what a Moneygram receipt looks like, and then forge the various required details onto it (ie. price, date, recipient, etc.) and then print and re-scan the document, you can make him think you've actually sent the money.
He'll then waste his time by trying to pull the 'money' out of nowhere.

I especially like the GIMPS money form transfer
http://www.scambuster419.co.uk/moneytransfer2.htm

------

Or you could maintain that you've tried to send the money to his moneygram account, but instead say that the Moneygram company refused you from being able send money to his account as that particular account is being investigated for international money laundering fraud... You can then act all innocent and ask him that was all about, and what it meant.... That will undoubtedly confuse and frustrate him. Then you can eventually bring in other forms of 'payment' options, and scam him further by obtaining various details, or making him run around a bit.

my mate was ripped off for 900 euro on ebay using Western Union.
stay away from that.

Timo
08.10.2004, 12:44 PM
I didn't mean to use Western Union for real! That site is dedicated to scamming people who scam using Western Union, Moneygram, etc..
The important thing is that you don't send any money at all. All you're doing is forging receipts to make it look like you have sent his money, and make him frustrated.
Waste his time, make him look out to be a gullible twat by sucking him in and making him do stuff, and covertly get as much info about himself that you can in the process.

Then print up any of his details, photos here and humiliate his ass off when it's all done and dusted. :)

it looks like the scammers are back again and it wouldnt surprise me if its the same ones going round the forums...

i posted some stuff for sale on sos a cpl of weeks ago, and got the same msg enquiring about both sale items..

admin have had a rush of complaints in the last cpl of days from ppl who got sent EXACTLY the same msg as me
