Just wandering,

If you could start again, and had the chance of buying your first synth, analogue or digital, hardware/software, romplers included....

Which one would you get, limited to say, around US$2000???

Im trying to help out a friend who is in the position of buying his very first VA, or main synth, and he is a little confused as to what he should buy, whether he should buy new, second hand, VSTi or outboard......

V-Synth!

Although I don't have one myself and shouldn't really back it too hard, I will stick by my choice. Good key action, heaps of real time controllers, built in sampler with Variphrase, Full VA section (but the VA seems to get improvements every OS update - indicating that it's not so flash) and it works well as an editable rompler.

Gosh, I have just re-watched the V-Synth demo video. That thing is fcking AMAZING!!!!!!!!

Edit: Geez...seems the V-Synth has alot of bugs and issues from users. Many unhappy customers! Thinking twice about it's credibility now

I have read about this thing on many dedicated forums, plus reading many independant reviews and it seems the bugs people are having trouble are because they don't seem to know what they are doing with it. It has some drawbacks, but for everything else it can do - I want it bad!!!

That's interesting for sure. Can it alter formant, pitch and time in "realtime" too? Mmmm, have to read up I reckon.

The V-synth has a few other tricks too though - Cosm filters/FX, appegiator which is fully programmable that can also hold CC data, legato style harmonization and many controls. I think as a controller synth it would be amazing.

Hhehe, I'm sounding like an ad or something.

EDIT: Forgot to say. The andromeda is an amzing synth too, but for the money I'd rather buy vintage stuff. The Andromeda is an icing on the cake type of synth (for those with heaps of cash). It does what it does well, but it doesn't do anything new.

Well.....I can get a Juno106 here in Japan for around $180 to $250 ausi, so yep, I'd buy a 106 over an Andromenda. If I could get an Andromeda for $200 ausi though, that'd be a different story. :D

Ahhh, the multi-sample question. It doesn't do multisampling well at all apparantly. Using variphrase it's fine for a couple of octaves, but over that there is difficulty. I've read of people layering performances to compansate for this though. Use variphrase for a few octaves and then sample in a higher octave and layer it as a different performance.
In a way that's better than using a real sampler anyways, but in other ways it wouldn't be.

Most people I've heard that are using it properly, clear the memory and sample. Everybody is down on those presets.

Another cool trick for the V-synth.

EDIT: Just say you wanna use it to filter an external signal in a new way....create a patch which has a different filter for each octave zone of the keyboard, then program the appegiator to play a note out of each zone in tempo - play your external source and then have the sound switching between many filters rapidly in time with the music. Nice!! Add synced LFOs controling FX to this and just think.......

if I had 2k i would add it to the money i have saved and by a 93 turbo Mr2...oh wait...thats not a synth...I would buy a few small synths...OB12, Jp8080, pulse, polymorph...or some Hr824's i could use some monitors...my ears are dying from headphones...

HEY......who said anything about monitors :x J/K :)

A good pair of monitors is IMO absolutely essential. Mixing on HP sounds so un-natural to me, I cant stand it!

Also essential are good DA converters, so you are monitoring your DAW at a high level of quality (yes, I know, AD is very important too)

Anyways....back to synths! No votes for Nord, Korg....Novation????

Well.....he has just got a G5/Digi 002, and also bought a Novation A-Station, without realising it was only mono-timbral...which is why he is on the hunt for a nice, "Phat" sounding synth, probably VA, maybe rompler???? Maybe softsynth.........

He hasnt really started making tunes yet but Im sure it will be electronica based.....as well as recording bands etc...

Nup, no Nord, Access, Novation, Alesis or anything else that's VA/Analogue only. Only because it's a first synth. Controllers and versitility are the way to go I rekon. Once he starts really making the type of music he wants to make, then he can choose the right tone of VA that suits.

Yup. A workstation would be the best option. Motif ES or Fantom-X.

Well I sold my Virus KC partly because I desperately needed the money whilst at uni....and partly 'cos I got a little pissed off with it (You should see my ranting and raving on GAS and Darksnous lol). However, im currently saving alot of money to buy the next Virus synth...which by the sounds of it...will be released sometime next year.
