looking at power amps and only want to spend about Au$500 max. I have had had some limited exp with Crown power amps and was checking out the XLS 402a a .. I only need max 200 watts per side at 8 ohms and this will more than do the job.. Does anyone have any other suggestions?? What do you use to power your monitors/pa speakers??

Happy NEw YEAR!!

Tis the most important question!!!!

As combining different Amps with Monitors will give vastly different results

Im afraid Im of no help here, I am using powered monitors, and just an old Technics A-Class amp for my Hi-Fi

I think the general rule is: Amp needs to be at least 1.5 times the power (in Watts) than the speakers, to allow for good headroom. Just keep that in mind.

for AU$500 I'd be looking at second hand pro hi-fi amp. I bought a 'studio amp' for AU$750 but after carful listening I prefer an old Luxman amp or the like.

Best thing would be to learn about amps, buy reading heaps of technical details of the design of amps. What is Class-A or Class B or differential and negative feedback?

Good luck.

I've got the RA300 at home and it is fantastic. I had it hooked up to a pair of Alesis Monitor Twos and it was the best sound I have ever heard out of a home setup.

Well I made a purcahse and it was a suprise one!!!

Ended up with a STK proaudio v-6 PowerAmp that cost me a measily 350 second hand.. 200 watts at 8ohm stereo :)

http://www.thekaraokeshack.com.au/getimageLarge.php?id=54

Channels x 2 Output power @ 4 ohms: 2 x 300 Watts Cooling: Variable speed fan Power bandwidth: 20Hz - 20kHz Frequency Reponse: 20Hz - 30kHz THD: 05% S/N Ratio >100dB Rack space: 2U Weight: 33lbs

I didn't expect to buy this but I was in the right place at the right time :) thanks for the info, I did look into samson and alesis and they both seemed to be good amps .. :D
