HELP! Nord or Alesis

heya fellas! TI is allready ordered, but we're contemplating getting one more. either the NORD or the Alesis Andromeda synth. they are approx same price range. what do you think??

also, there are different types of NORDs.. can someone explain the difference for us?

i would suggest geting one synth at a time
you might not need another va or atleast reach that conclusion by yourself after few weeks/months with the virus.

What other gear you have? Getting a workstation, like Motif ES, would be better than another VA.

well, we're a pure synth band. not looking for accoustic instruments and such.. we want to have another synth that can offer up maybe a bit different synth soundset from a virus.

for now we only have the TI (soon that is).. :)

How much money do you have availble to spend? Is the Virus TI your getting the 61 key version? Is the Virus TI your only synth at the moment?

we have pre-ordered the TI P?lar and yes, this is the only equipment we have with the exception of a couple of midi-controllers.

v-synth looks really good. but its maybe a bit costly.. how about the NORD... thats no good?

The "problem" with that Nord (by the way which Nord? Nordlead2/3 or G2?) is very much like Virus TI, except Virus does it better... Although the G2 would be a different story.

I'd really advice you to get some kind of sampler. You need one anyway for drums, FX and some other sounds created by sampling. Also remember that sampling can also be used to create all kinds of leads, basses, pads, etc by filtering, modulating and effecting samples. I'd say that with sampling you can get more interesting sounds than with VA's.

Getting another VA would be just duplicating what you already have. Get a sampler and you widen the palette. After that you can start considering another VA.

A sampler or even a ROMpler would do the trick :)


The Virus is already quite versatile when it comes to the VA market, and TI with his new features will surely eliminate all need for more than one VA in the studio!

I might sell my jp8080 once I hear the hypersaw on my TI :)

Andromeda is awesome, if you know how to program synths. It's the only analog synth, which has 16 voices of polyphony and today's technology. Andro is also ridiculously low priced in europe right now. I paid 2800 euro for one when the recommended price still was 3290 euro!!! The price is now as low as 2390e because dollar is so weak compared to euro. I'd go for andro over v-synth, nord 3, G2 or any other similarly priced synth if you live in europe.

Like most of the other guys have said, you really should think about what you will need the thing for. As you don't really have a great deal of gear, there will be some big holes in your music - specially around the drum area.

I'd say go for something with a sampling option. This will give you access to more sounds and also the option to resample the TI.

The G2s will give you alot of usable sounds different to the TI...

The Andromeda is a very nice synth indeed, but still it won't do anything violently different to the TI - will add a nice new charcture.

The V-synth will give you lots of options as far as sampling goes. You could fill up the flash ram cards with samples of the synths you like and then have the option to change them into new sounds.

I think basicly it comes down to what type of music you guys are planning to make.

I'd choose between Yamaha Motif ES and Roland Fantom X. The Fantom could be better in sampling stuff, so maybe I'd pick that one.

Yup. But I'd say no matter what kind of music you make, you always need a sampler or at least a rompler. A studio without any sampling stuff is like a car without the tires. It's a must have.

very excellent!! thanks a lot for that advice.. bet we'll go with a v-synth.. seems like that is the closest thing to the complete package we're looking at; specially considering we're going to use it in large part for live sets.

I'll be jealous if you get that V I have to admit. Cool choice for stage use too, because of the timetrip-pad and those D-beams. Very active movements on stage are always nice.

Still though, look around. The V-synth is a fair chunk of money compared to alot of other gear. You could get a basic sampling workstation and a drumpad for live triggering instead for that money.

Just shooting off options.
