hello peeps!

I'm new to the virus world, but i'm not new to the synth world.

Just picked up a used virus-a the other day and been integrating it into my studio and exploring the features.
I've been eyeing them with envy since they came out back in '97.

My music is mostly IDM and dark techno with some ebm, synthpop, and prog house on the side.
BTW - I friggin' hate the term IDM but until someone comes out with a better name for it i guess i'm stuck with it. :(

Anyways, here's a quick lowdown of some of the other synths I use in my studio:
-Korg Triton Studio 61 w/MOSS
-Yamaha CS6x w/PLG150-AN (traded my an1x for it.. what a mistake!)
-Roland MC-505
-Kurzweil PC-88
-Korg DW8000
-Korg Legacy Collection
-Reason 2.5
-Battery 2.1

I wont list off all my other recording equipment cause that would take way too long and its really not that important.

Anyhoo. Been reading the writeups and articles on this site.
Seems like theres alot of good info here.

Please pardon my ignorance but what is IDM?

IDM is a bad name.. a very very bad name.. but really good music..
(IDM=inteligent dance music.. ugh.. spare me!)

IDM is best known by bands like Autechre, Boards of Canada, Download, Aphex Twin, Male or Female, etc.

Pretty much surreal ambient breakbeat material, but very experemental.

I didnt know that Aphex could be considered dance! Like The Richard D. James album? That man is WAY out there, but what a great artist!

And Welcome!

Lol.
I know exactly what you're talking about.

Thats why i really dont like the term IDM.. you cant really dance to any of it O.o
(Even though some of the early aphex could be played in a club like "analog bubblebath" or "Digeridoo")

Anyways, thx for the freindly welcome. I'm not finished my idm tracks yet, but i'll be sure to post the worthwhile ones.
Maybe by then i will have discovered a better name for this kinda music.

Right now i'm just having way to much fun playing mad scientist with my Virus-A..
I havent had this much fun with a synth since i had my AN1x.

Ishkur's Gudie to Electronic Music (http://www.ishkur.com/features/music/index.htm) says this about IDM:

"This is the oddest named genre in the entire world, since it's not easily danceable, it's not certifiably intelligent, and it's arguable as to whether it constitutes as actual music. This is the realm of the uber-pretentious electronic music afficionados, with razor-thin eclectic tastes, who spend most of their waking energy arguing about what IDM is and what IDM isn't. But I guess that depends on what your definition of 'is' is. That's why it's the one genre that doesn't have any kind of cohesive sound. That's also why some of them despise the term "Intelligent Dance Music". So just ignore them. It is fun to listen to, after all."

Totally classic guide I say. Excellent remarks. ?hih.

And welcome aboard, Chinard.

damn thats a good explanation, and pretty much sums it all up.

Its fun to listen to (and write) despite its name. 8)
