Oh my god, the sequence and the sound at 3:03 kills me. I so can see Ben's face moving on this one. Awesome stuff.
Damn that synth has attitude.
I'm not disapointed in the trance thing that starts at 0:40 seconds or so, but I'm not all that excited for some reason. I kinda sounds a bit generic, I would have prefered to hear this dry to really see how clean this is supposed to sound!
Good job

You need to imagine Marc's face for a more accurate recreation of the moment that sequence was played ;)

the hoover sound is certainly not the most innovative sound ... well, it is a hoover sound ;)
the interesting bit is that there is not much effect on it at all. in fact it is the long release time that sounds like a reverb. recording it, i had so many voices to my disposal that for the first time playing a virus it felt like i didn't need to take polyphony into consideration at all.
it took 5 hrs to record all the demos. it was fun and inspiring. to be honest, much more fun than doing demos in the recent years because you can feel that something fundamentally has been added to the sound of the virus. i'm looking forward to do more demos and once we loads of sound designers on the case we will know how deep the rabbit hole really goes.
another eye opener i had with the production was the power of only one of the new oscillators. there for instance is a belly pad which sounds perfectly cool and expected but after a short while another character adds to the sound. the bells are wavetables created by the first oscillator and the addition is a high passed very broad hypersaw that sounds so lush that i needed to check if it's really just one oscillator.
another cool thing that probably got lost within all that specs about the TI is that when you switch a patch and you hold the notes the TI actually plays the old patch as long as you hold the notes while new notes are being played with the new sound. and this goes for the FX (including reverb and delay) as well. the old patch continues to have its dedicated delay/reverb setting and does not interfere with the new sound at all
best, marc

Thanks much to marc and ben for the demo! My feelings on it are mixed -- the sounds are fairly standard pad/lead sounds, albeit with some of the nice, subtle complexity the wavetables can bring. On the flip side, this is the first virus demo I've heard that has that smooth, rich, high-frequency, glassy sound I typically associate with 'expensive,' so that's great. Overall, for what I like, the patches sound decent, but the quality sounds excellent.
I don't know if it's just the demos or if it's actually a limitation of the virus, but I've never once heard anything but usable sounds in a demo. I tend to like the more crazy, heavily modulated sound effect-type stuff.
At any rate, it's just nice to hear something. Thanks!

I am feeling the same on the demo. it was nice, but I wasn't blown away. I think it was something from Access to hold over the buyers, that is why they used mostly "expected" sounds you would want to hear. They knw people are getting anxious and deciding to split from the TI pre-order camp. This move was to give those people just a little teaser that would possibly keep them hanging on for longer.

Ummmm why exactly is useable sounds in a demo a problem? LOL....of course were talking about synths here.....if you have the imagination...you can make almost anything on a synth. You wanna hear a Virus do made shit?

first of all, when i do demos normally i have a virtually unlimited amount of sounds to my disposal (there is about 5000 on the access site...). here, i had about 20 and they were specifically designed to show what's new (only using the new oscillator types).
as for the "usuable" sounds, we will take that in. i never thought that a demo can ever cover exactly what you would do yourself. so indirectly i just covers what I would do with the sound in this moment. point me to a link of what you expect and i happily will listen to it.
what somebody described as expensive wasn't designed for a sales reason at all (apart from the fact that we live from selling our synths of course). it's just the way those oscs sound. a wavetable clearly has a clarity to it which was not possible to program with the traditional VA oscillators. if it would, we wouldn't felt the need to develop wavetable oscillators in the first place. we wouldn't implement a new oscillator without knowing that it would add a lot to the sonic arsenal.

Well Marc & Ben.....from what ive heard in that demo...its enough to convince me that it'll be capable of the kinda sounds I wish to make. Funny enough, I personally wont be using the hyper saw for cliched trance leads....ill be using it more in an ambient/experimental sense.
I think some of these presets are *very* well programmed. Some really beautiful tones.....im happy you resisted the urge to make a trance demo! I expect most people who complain are the ones who cant program shit. Its important people remind themselves that synths are capable of an almost infinite pallette of colours......
Just my opinion of course....

I think the demo Ben did at Namm was maybe a little more inspirational for me. It showed more of what could be done in my own hands.
The sound at about 3.20 is very cool indeed, but that was the only sound that I felt had real guts. The wavetables sound, um....OK - maybe if user waves become an option it would help. Also not sitting down with it myself and modulating the wavetables doesn't give a good idea, but still....
Anyway, you can hear the new features have opened up cool sound designing posibilities, now it's the wait for more programmers to try their hand at it.
I'll make some patches for you if you guys send me a free one by the way! :D

That is a bold statement my friend. Wasn't complaining about the capabilities. I was saying I was not too impressed with what was done on the demo. Whilst I'm happy that it comes across like that, most of those sounds were much easier to make than they might sound. I think this is something which is hard to appreciate until you try it yourself. By their very design, the wavetable oscillators excel at complex movement.
Another thing about them is that if you take one patch that is already using a modulated table, and try simply scrolling through the tables, you instantlly create a load of new sounds. Then if you change the Index start point, or maybe something as simple as the polarity of the modulation (i.e. change LFO Assign>Wavetable Index1 Amount from positive to negative), you get a load of different sounds again. Or you could simply change the LFO Rate and Shape etc, etc..

In that demo, anything that doesn't sound like the Hypersaw is probably the wavetable oscillators. Listen for brittle, crystalline timbres - glassy sweeps and tinkly stardust in the pads..

Thanks. That patch is called 'BelisimoBC' - it's really a very simple patch, but sounds so beautiful it's difficult to stop playing it :) All I did was take a Hypersaw on Osc1 (density 9) and a pretty simple bell wave on Osc2. I then used LFO2 in env mode to sweep Osc Balance, so the bells fade into warm saws as you hold the keys. A tiny bit of lowpass filtering, some delay and chorus, and Bob's your uncle.

OK, Understandable, but just b/c I was not impressed by the sounds does not mean I dont respect the time that went into making the patches. I meant no offense by saying I wasn't impressed, it was just my honest opinion.
I think Ben did a great job on designing certain sounds people are most like to use. Lets be honest, this is what sells a synth anyway. Not everybody, except some people on this board and the mailing list, like to take the time and program a synth. Some poeple buy a virus, just so they can get their hands on the standard over-used sounds instead of building their own sounds. And this is what the demo is catering to I think. Lets face it. It was a safe way to showcase the features of the new tables and hypersaw. Once again there is nothing wrong that, as Access needed to finally do something of the such to keep pre-order people at bay.
BTW, did you break down and just buy that Andy8 yet?

Ben,
Thanks for the offer. If it is not putting you out in any way, I would like to hear more drone patches like the first one, except a more gritty and dark (more waves mixed with the hyper). Maybe bit-reduction and saturation used on the wavetables to give it that lof-fi, sci-fi sound (some crazy sounds you would hear on Star-Trek/battlestar galactica). How about some crazy off the wall evolving patches that you think people would have a hard time making a track with. Maybe a sine mixed with the new wavetable that evolves the morphing wavetable into a sub-bass with movement ( I can hear the sound, just aving trouble explaining it). Anything off the wall basically. i am really intrigued by the possibilities of the new wavetables.
After watching the video a thousand times, I can see the potential of the new waveforms, which I personally think you guys did a great job on the ones that were showcased. I know Access is not trying to create a replication of the waldorf, but instead branch out on their own and create something invigorating and new.
Listening to it again, I can hear the potential in the first and the fifth (i think) wavetable patches, and somewhat in the last one.
MADSTATION
16.03.2005, 10:21 PM
What I'd like to hear in the patches would be a few arpeggiated patches so I can see how flexible the new arp is going to be. I hope it has variable note lenght, velocity and that you can also choose the notes(not only octave up, octave down) :)
But I totally agree with Merlot regarding drone-like patches :D
Once again, been listening to the demo in loop since it was released..Some GREAT stuff in there!
Nice one the Access team. :)

I don't get why some of you are saying that the TI is too expensive...
I mean, I preordered with Novamusik and I get it even cheaper than when I bought my KC! Now that's a deal :)
If I remember correctly, the price jumped up a couple of $100 dollars after the first two weeks the new TI was announced. So those that pre-ordered early enough I guess got a even slightly better deal :) hopefully novamusik honors the price that it was preordered at.

dont tell me you bought the xylophone model without midi in/out !!!!
you are realy stuffed now....

but maybe access is testing a new cordless plugless midi cable/interface setup which you can use....we should wait and see
maybe that's why its taking so long to release
The release of the cheezsets are nice and all but I think I would rather have it released for it to really impress me. Im starting to get blue balls here cuz access in not putting out.

Ben, I don't know if this question is answered before.
I used to own a Virus C and I sold it because of the release of the TI. I have made a lot of projects using the VC and I was wondering if I can restore my VC soundsets on the TI using SoundDiver.
