Can someone direct me to a good Compressor please!

hey, I need a good compressor to limit the massive volume swells I get when performing on my virus kc live. Anybody got any suggestions for a good compressor? Thanks ahead of time!

Check out FMR Audio's RNC (Really Nice Compressor).

It is only $200 and out classes models twice it's price.

They also make a great mic pre (the RNP, Really Nice Preamp) for $500.

If you simply want a compressor to do it's job, there are hundreds out there that will be capable. I have the DBX 266XL and, it does its job. If you were after something that would sweeten your sound, then you would be looking at alot more.

Now for the important question......

Do you know how to use a compressor?

This is not entirely accurate...it easily outclasses models 6 times its price!! :) I still find lots of uses for it, even though I have a Distressor and a Focusrite Red.

Whoa, Pan, very nice! Any chance you could maybe put up some demos of the Distressor dry vs. processed? I've heard so much about it, but never actually heard one! Considering the (very expensive) price I always wondered what it was capable of. I've always been dying to hear one. There aren't any audio demos on their website either. =/

Yeah, I'll put something up when I get a bit of time this afternoon. The Distressor is nice because: 1. You'll never want to get rid of it; and 2. If you have to get rid of it, you'll get at least 90% of what you paid for it. I use it most often for tracking bass (you know, the kind you actually play), my signal chain for that is bass-->greatriver me-1nv-->distressor-->A/D. When I play the bass, it ends up yielding a very pleasing sound. When my bassist plays, it sounds like a platinum album...

thanks for the advice... and in response to jes... yah, I have the basic idea behind a compressor... :o I dont need it to sweeten the sound... but rather... to tame the sound of a keyboard.

I perform on my virus like a piano (ie I dont sequence it) and I tend to create these bass/lead sounds through which I can use the filter (and the rectifying distortion) to add a sorta menacing wah sound... the trouble is... using a LP filter... I tend to run into UNGODLY HUGE VOLUME SWELLS... which... being a guitarist for most of my life (and dealing with sound guys) Ive realized that sound guys would want to murder me if I didnt find a way to normalize the sound output... this especially runs into alot of fun when recording, because I run my Virus through a boss delay (to fatten the sound) and that tends to completely fill the spectrum of sound (even though it doesnt sound like that.

Distressor is one of the best compressors that i ever had the
pleasure to work with, but it's stil too expensive for my studio.
