Hiya guys,

I've just bought myself some HD650's and a Cardas cable that comes with a free headphone and cable "burn in" CD.

Now I never knew that you had to burn headphones in. Apparently I need to leave the CD playing through my RME into the headphones for about 8 days before they are ready to use (the same goes for amps) - unbelievable!!!

Just a bit shocked and thought I'd share that info in case anyone else is blissfully unaware of this...

I hear audiophiles saying things along those lines. The thing is, half the time it seems justified and half the time not.

Think of it as burning in your studio monitors.

No, it's just a break-in period. Not really necessary, as any breaking in that gear has to do, it will do on its own as a result of normal use. I can't imagine that the percentage of gear out there that has been burned in could possibly be over 2%. Don't worry about it...

Well yep....people into high-end hi-fi often crack on about this. The components and internal copper wiring is virgin....and needs to be burned (i.e. you gotta send a high signal through it...for about 20 hours). I dont know the technical reasons why one should do this...but apparently it does improve the dynamic range/warmth of the cable/instrument.

When I first got the virus I set it on a arpegio hold for a couple of days into a muted mixer channel. Crazy I know....but I wanted to burn the internal components. Its weird...but whenever I used the virus I would turn it on 20 mins before using it (i guess ive spent too much time with old analogs)....but I kinda do it just so that in my mind atleast....the instrument is wamred up and ready to rock.

Strange but true...

But just to re-iterate.....always burn in new gear.

Similar to cars, come to think about it. You aren't supposed to thrash them in the first 3,000 km's.
