I can't make up my mind..

I want it for mainly trace arp sounds...

Am I forgetting something?

If you want it for trance arps, then I'd say the SupernovaII. The Nords are more for harsh on the top leads.

The supernova has a really nice character for those trance arps!
If you like the trance act from Rome "Nu-Nrg", that's very representative of their sound.

Nordlead is awesome for lush trance pads but not that much for leads.

Actually I should have high-lighted that fact too. You won't be getting any of those layered saw style leads with the NL2, just mix penetrating hard edge stuff.

Anyway, let us know what you end up with. :D

Actually a Jupiter 6 is good at trance/dance type arpegios.....

Doesnt have any real onbaord arp's to speak of....so that side of things would have to be done on your sequencer I guess....

But failing that....then I would have to say that if you could get hold of a Novation KS4 or KS5 (and they are really cheap) and a Nord2X you would be set for that type of music.

Why get another synth for trace arp sounds when you have a Virus? I think the Virus is better at those sounds than both Supernova and Nordlead, but if you should get one of those synth Id say get the Nord, because it sound better overall.

If you want your music to sound squeeky clean and repulsive, get a SuperNova.

I had one and had to sell it because it's too clean. Everything you do with it sounds like pop music.

ABSOLUTELY GREAT FOR TRANCE!!!!

Well, I do twisted dark psytrance with a KS (KS has the same synth engine as the Novas, but only one sound can be playd at the time), and I promiss you it does not sound like POP when you program it like you want it to sound!! If youd like I could send you some demos... Because the factory sounds it comes with is in fact pop sounds!!! Ive made 150 twisted presets on it so far, its realy fast to work with.

A friend of me have the supernova 2, and the great thing with it, is that its multi timbral, so you can make multi splits, or synth drumsets, and run them on the arpeggio, which is super cool by the way, when you start twisting the parameters! I belive you can also have seperate effects on all 16 chanels.

I have a nordlead 1 in the studio. It sucks. We use it as a midi controller!

Shit! You should be imprisoned for that statement! (I mean it :D )

You make psytrance eh? Do you realise how much the Nordlead are used in that genre? The Nordlead 1 and 2 are really the source of alot of those psytrance sounds. The Nordlead is for psy what the JP8000 is for trance (imo).

I think psytrance has changed alot over the few years it has existed. There are so many psytrance artists today and to me most them sound 100% identical! Psytrance has evolved to a mostly party orientated style of music, and the productions are often loud and fatigueing (to me atleast).

But i really enjoy some of the older Infected Mushroom. They are really brilliant musicians and excellent sound engineers.

You can hear clips of thier tracks here:

http://www.psyshop.com/shop/CDs/yoy/yoy1cd047.html

Also check out Hallucinogen. I personally never really liked his psytrance that much but its very typical oldschool psytrance:

More modern psytrance sounds like this:

Psytrance is pretty vast...
GOA used to be quite big around 99-2000.
Then FULL ON take over.
Goa was more melodic and full on was more about really
driving basslines(with loads of notes).
Now it's more about tech trance and more progressive stuff(@ la Son Kite)

So a few suggestions:

Astrix --->?Awesome quality of production, really catchy tunes.
Infected Mushroom --->?They pretty much defined the genre imo.
Son Kite --->?More progressive stuff.
GMS --->?Classic psytrance. Their sound evolved over the years, really dig their stuff.

And so on :)

Ok..I know you guys are going to kill me, but I ended up buying a Yamaha Motif ES Rack.

I figure It'll be easier for me to pick up a used NL or SNII on ebay...well obviousily since they're no longer manufactured.

I figure I'd go with a bigger ticket price purchase now and spring the lesser costly one on my wife later.

I actually decided on the NL2X Rack, but at the last second I couldn't resist the new ES Rack.

I also bought the techno card SR-JV80-11 expansion card for my XV-3080.

I know it doesn't make much sense because I already have a Triton Studio with vintage, Dance, Trance ROMs and Turbo Phatt with X-Lead, and Techno Construction Yard ROM, Virus B, XV-3080, A-Station, and now the Motif ES Rack.......The next purchase will be a NL2X Rack.

DS...

Psy trance has been around for at least 10 years, probably a fair bit longer as I was playing it like 8 years ago.

Check out Flying Rhino records, Cosmophilia, Transient, Krembo, TIP, Blueroom (All record labels with loads of cool psytrance mostly from back in the day when it was still clever and had lots of imagination.)

If you like big synth-soundscapes and stuff, you will love some psy trance.

Well big is a relative term, and Goa trance which is what psy trance originally was called started in the early 90s and got its name due to the fact that it was first played at parties in Goa, India (by drugged out hippies :) ) It started getting more well known around 94/95

Then FULL ON take over.

Well, it still seems to be a lot about the full-on sound, but that is the more commercial side of it.

Infected Mushroom started producing quite late in the picture. Hallucinogen defined the genre, along with The Infinity Project and Astral Projection and a few other early producers.

Son Kite --->?More progressive stuff.
GMS --->?Classic psytrance. Their sound evolved over the years, really dig their stuff.

GMS are now quite full-on and cheesy in my opinion. If you are looking at newer psy I'd try some Antix for progressive stuff and Protoculture or Wrecked Machines for more full on without going too cheesy.

I had a supernova 2 keyboard 2 years ago and it was a fantastic synth. So I sold it for some reason. Yesterday I finally sold my pc and got money to buy supernova 2 rack and that was a really good investment. I didn't remember how good the sn2 sounded. I like the rack very much. It also has all the most important buttons and knobs in the front panel so there's not much menu tweaking. Of course some things have to be tweaked in the menus but it's very logical how it works.

The synth is also very good and powerful looking. I like the sound very much. The filters are good and the distortion sound good to be a digital distortion. Also like we know, all the parts have their own effects so the patches don't change at all altough you use the multi mode which is great. I am planning to get a behringer ada8000 adat-box very soon to be able to use all the outputs. I thinks supernova is one of the best synths by sound and features and ease of use. I was playing one pad sound last night for 2 hours and almost cried. I had been looking for that kind of pad sound for years and wondered where those producers get that sound from. FROM THE SUPERNOVA! Strange that I didn't notice that kind of sound last time when I had the keyb. Of course virus and jp sound fantastic too but I just love the supernova. It is here to stay now like are all the other synths too.

If you want to take a look at it, check here (I also posted this link in another topic but I guess not many clicked the link because the name of the link was a little mysterious): my supernova2 (http://users.tkk.fi/~thpoikon/reason_v2.jpg)

The nords are great too. I had a nord modular keyb which was pain to use without the editor but otherwise it was a great synth. The sounds were fantastic but you had to program then yourself. The presets sucked a big time. A Nord 2 is a good synth too but I would get a supernova instead.

I wasnt dissing the nord lovers, I was comenting the novation hater! err.. anyway, shure the nordlead 1 was used a lot, but to day its colecting dust to me! Id much rather go for nordlead2! And much rather a novation, as you can do much more with those.

I look at nordlead 1 as the symbol of the first VA synths, so naturaly its outdated by now. For me it is stoneaged, and if you look at using it like it is, youd be much more happy with an old analog clasic synth (or what, DS? ;-) ). Because the nordlead 1 is very limited. (try synth1 instead, its free!) To day if I was to purcase it, id much rather look at software synths. If your on a budget, that is!

But for heavens sake, I respect nordlead 1 ;-)

Usually the prices for sn2 rack are around 700-900 euros.

I'm just searching for a nord rack 2 to complete my rack. I also got the virus powercore plugin running very well on my new powercore pci mk2. I'm gonna get another of those and a multi license again (I already had a virus multi but sold it due to a DAW compatibility problem).

OK....here's the latest.

As I mentioned I opted for the Motif ES Rack, but ended up returning it and getting an ONYX 1640.

I knew there was no pre-eq on the direct outs before I bought it, but no pre-fader and pre-insert. It's really a marketing blunder on mackie's part. Even the Firewire is pre-everyting..except the gain knob. It sucked....you have this sweet preamp, eq section, but you can only use the gain knob via direct outs. The preamps sound awesome, but I was having problems with channel four....it wasn't putting out a loud enough signal to match the right side.

So..........I returned it and I'm back to what I should have done from day one.......I got the Nord Lead 2X Rack.

I haven't got it yet, but should be here next week.

Now what should I get.........SUPERNOVA II, or JP-8080???

Trance ARPS and new age hip hop sound is what I'm going for.

Isnt that standard on alot of mixers?

Sometimes there is an option to change that, but you have to get inside the board and re-solder things. Most mixers I've used the Direct out's are post fader/EQ/inserts....

Digitalkidd
10.07.2005, 07:32 AM
No offense, but you must be using some lame ass boards. Even the VLZ's had pre-eq and you're right.....most other boards do have a button to toggle for pre-eq or post-eq, etc.

There is an unsupported mod to make the direct outs pre-eq, or pre-fader....you can go to the Mackie forum to read more, but there are so many upset Onyx owners that we have to take matters into our own hands...hell I would have paid an extra $300-$400 for pre-eq, etc, but I'm willing to bet money that Mackie will release a ONYX 1640 as something like ONYX 1640P....to add a toggle switch for exactly what you mentioned..post/pre eq via direct outs. The sad thing is..........there is already a pre/post eq button on the board, but it's only for the main mix......?????????? It's ridiculous.......they were really close to having the perfect DAW mixer, but they'll figure it out.

Thats quite an assumption! Considering you have no idea what I have or have used. I could sit here and name them all, and Im sure at the same time put to rest any notion that I have been using "lame ass boards", but I really cant be fucked.

I should have said in my earlier post that most LIVE mixers (like the Mackies tend to be) have the direct outs post fade/EQ/Insert.

Good luck!

Sorry for the comment about you using lame ass boards
No probs!

I had this exact problem the other night, we were asked to record a funk/RnB band on short notice, so had no time for planning, and had to take the signal from the Direct outs on the board. Of course, this was post fade/EQ/Inserts, so all of the FOH engineers EQ's, compressions, and fader moves were recorded too!

I must say, this sucked. At times, because the bass was so loud, he would pull the bass fader down, sometimes completely off, which really screwed us. I had to go tell him to just take the damn channel of the master buss instead of turn it all the way down and fuck up our recording.

We need to get a 1 in 2 out stage box so we are completely independant of FOH....

if you want happy comercial sounding trance get the supanova
