View Full Version : who is your favorite DJ?
ok, let's start.
The best DJ who I've ever seen is Adam Beyer. He's a swedish guy who plays pretty hard techno sets. Everytime when I've seen/heard him, he rocked the party like a fucking earthquake.

Matt Cantor aka The Freestylers!
He may not be one of the most technically skilled DJ's around, but he has got one fat crate!
what kind of music does he mix?

Ummm....I would say electronica, but that is a pretty general term. In the late 90's they were doing big beat and electro, now they are doing more nu-skool breaks and breakbeat, alot of it with heavy ragga influences.
They rock!
Some may know them from the overplayed and over-rated song "Push up". This is not indicative of their style.

Wow, a tough question indeed!
I've got a top 4:
Paul Oakenfold, John Digweed, Nick Warren, and Steve Helstrip.
They all have dropped some really fat sets over the years and are masters of the craft in their own right.
There are really quite alot of good DJs out there now.
Jon O'Bir has also put out some great sets, many free for download off his site; www.jonobir.com.
Cheers!

I heard Z-Trip's Live at the 8150, (Vale Colordao) 2 CD set last year and it kicked ass!
That dude has some serious turntablism skills.
He is a monster!

James Zabiela. A blend of prog house and breaks!
I've seen several thousands of djs over the years and I can say that from what I saw, he is the best without the shadow of a doubt.

Steve Porter is just the overall best DJ I have ever heard play, he mixes it up so nicely. Nice funky house to tech house and breaks then add a splash of some very good driving progressive and there you have Steve Porter (all about the growling basslines).

Chris Liberator does it for me, he plays acid techno, fucking top dj.
And a couple fo local guys from Christchurch, King Al who plays house and is absolutely incredible. If he wasn't so fucking lazy he'd be playing all over the world. And another guy who plays under the name Subvert, he plays psy-trance and his mixing in that genre is as close to perfect as I have heard, only problem is he doesn't like playing out much, but when he does it is a real treat.

I saw a live act a few years ago it was "Punk Floyd" consisting of DDR, GEEZER and Chris Liberator...It was crazy as well :)

Wow, you guys are easily impressed by DJs aren't you?
Most of the names you mention I would consider average at best.
Scratch all the commercial successes off the list for a start, I haven't yet heard one that can mix as good as the locals around here. Unfortunately in the DJ business, mixing talent and success have zero correlation.
I heard a Carl Cox cd the other day and couldn't believe it! They call this guy the best dj in the world? Not only was the music complete shite, but it wasn't even mixed. Just studio mixed. Fuckin cheats

Gopal: Totally agree with you there :)
It's funny here in Montreal, most of the time when a headliner comes to smaller underground parties(under 2000 ppl) people are disapointed by the performance and are having more of a blast with the locals. Some locals tend to push it much harder than some established big names(ie: mixing with 3 turntables, adding a sampler to the equation, scratching/phrasing and so on).

Carl Cox is a very very good dj, I don't like his current music but FACT 1 is one of the best trance mix cds ever produced.
I believe it is a live mix rather than studio/pro-tools mix which most seem to be these days.
That and seeing him play live on three decks was covincing enough for me.
But in general I agree, local djs can be just as talented, if not more so.

Yep , search for some of his live sets that are available on the net. Check out his Global Session`s radio shows. :D
TommyS: Adam Beyer, Chris Liebing, Dave Clarke and Cari Lekebusch are coming to Switzerland in August. Can't believe it, I'm not here.

Has anyone who listed Paul Okenfold seen him live?
When I saw him live he sucked hardcore, was really disapointed.
Marco Carola, however, rocks ass live. I've never seen a DJ get everyone in the club (including bartenders etc) rockin' to the beat for his whole set.
Nick Warren GU Amsterdam and John Digweed GU Hong Kong are some of my favorite mixes, but I'm not as impressed with the more recent stuff these guys have done.
I'm starting to like the Steve Lawler, Hernan Cattaneo, Parks and Wilson, Danny Howells kinda stuff more.
And speaking of this genre, what would you call this stuff, Progressive House? Also, does anyone know the "popular" synths they use to make "progressive house?"

Honestly, i cant believe how anyone can put a trance dj on the list.... Great tracks, probably, mixed perfectly, i hope to god that anyone can mix trance and not wreck! but trance to me is created in the studio and merely showcased live. DJ's of other stles have to work much harder...
Just my opinion......
Richie Hawtin is far in away the best dj i've seen, he creates all his own breakdowns live, its more along the lines of a live PA than a DJ set, he remixes everything on the fly, i suggest everyone go see him no matter what music you're into....
Also, House: Bad Boy Bill, Drum n Bass: Aphrodite or Adam F, both wicked... and MAD respect for fatboy slim, the only man i've seen mix rock n roll/drum n bass/house/techno and punk in 1 set......
Dugmac
30.06.2005, 05:23 PM
Yeah I'm with you on Fatboy Slim. Real party music.
I think my favourite DJ though is James Zabiela. I can understand some people can't get into his style because it isn't exactly throw your hands in the air stuff but his technical ability is just beyond anything I've seen.

i would say the usual stuff-VAs and analog gear....
i know alot of guys are using NI's Absynth which is an amazing hybrid synth.

Yeah, Carl Cox seemed to go from fantastic to really shitty for some reason. His FACT 1 mix cd is fantastic and from what I can tell actually mixed rather than cut and pasted together in pro-tools.
It was after that he seemed to go downhill and that was in 95 so 10 years of going downhill means he is pretty shitty now :)

There is a fundamental difference between a DJ and a Turntablist. The difference is that a good Turntablist has talent, where as a good DJ has skill.
Club DJs that don't produce the music they're mixing aren't worth a pinch of shit. Glorified pretty boys soaking up the glory for other peoples hard work, then letting it go to their heads! The DJ/club culture is so shallow and fake.
Turntablists on the other hand create usable instruments by messing with Vinyl. I've met guys who could actually play melodies by scratching together 2 records that contained a straight pitch. These are the only guys who I can respect as "DJs".
Just my two cents. :D
EDIT: I should say though, I'm only refering to the Dance/Club scene where DJs are concerned. These guys take way too much credit. DJs that are mixing other forms of music don't usually have half the attitude.

I?m not into turntablism, but i have lots of respect for those who do this art!!!
I saw Dj swamp (was scratching for beck thoses days) making a freestyle show in a festival,he played smoke on the water from deep purple scratching a vynil wich wasnt even in the turntable,he was holding the vynil only !!!
Still i have great respect for good djs with mixing skills and musical choices!!!

YO BRO. I FEEL YA! I agree with you 100% These overglorified DJs taking tooooooooo much credit for other people's hardwork.
So I know what you mean.
I used to DJ alot in the late 90s and knew NOTHING about production and let all that nonsense go to my head....then I saw later on how hard people like you and the real talent put their hard work into making a crowd go nutz.
However, I still think a good DJ that knows how to program a night and combining great talented pieces together is another great skill that alot of producers lack. You have to admit. Its people who know how to produce a record that makes people go bananas and know how to program a night are the great ones. Very few though IMHO.
BUT YES! Overall they are overglorified. You should come to NYC and see for yourself. makes me want to puke. So sickening...
Meanwhile they barely produce music and fool the suckers that they are the talent....please! But Yo mad respect to you for even being true like that and seeing the otherside :)

DJ Marcus from Son Kite is the best DJ I've heard in all my years. he is on Digital Structures out of Malmoe, Sweden. Also, Banel from Iboga Records is another one of my favs. I do not enjoy any commerical progressive artists... Oakenfold, Van Dyk, Cox.... some of my least favs..
John Digweed is still very good, IMO. I agree that Dave Clarke is very good. I need to mention Dj Gavin previously from NY now part of Iboga Records.... Am I the only person who likes progressive psytrance on this forum...
