I have absolutely no knowledge of the Nord Lead but I do like the JP-8080.

I was torn between the Virus B and a JP-8080 last year.
The JP-8080 has a gorgeous, smooth sound and looks beasty as well.

It's great for dance music and has very satisfied users.

You also need to consider
a) whether you can afford a keyboard to go with a JP-8080
b) Is the Nord Lead 1 Keyboard any good?

I must say, I just love my Fatar 88-key keyboard and I will always want a seperate keyboard.

I would say JP-8080 - just because I know it's a quality piece of equipment.

However... do you already have a Virus?
If so - you may find these synths do exactly the same thing.
If not - why not?

I'm sure you can get a Virus B for the same price as a JP-8080 if you get a good deal. I got my Virus B 2nd-hand last year for ?400GBP ($700USD).

the nord is a rack unit. Obviously the jp is too. Im not too worried about a keyboard as I'll be using a midi kb for that. I'm cramped for space so a full scale kb is not an option really anyway. Both the units are 66,000 yen which is about USD$600. which is reasonable. 50,000yen would be a bargain I think so its just on the edge. The thing is, I don't really see many of these units kicking around in Tokyo so I'm very tempted to snap one up before they dissapear..

NORD emulation? Didn't know there was such a thing...could it possibly compare to the real thing?

Absolutely, I sold my Nord Lead 2 after comparing www.discodsp.com, its 100 us dollars and can import Nord Lead 2(X) patchs/banks. Sounds really good!

Go for the 8080. It the nord is at the same price, it's overpriced.

I think you are being very unfair :P
'exactly' did not really mean 'exactly'.

The Virus and JP-8080 are both subtractive VA-type synths with what appears to me to be very similar feature sets.

There is a lot of JP-8080 sounds which can be replicated on the Virus and vice-versa.

It sounds like c mode has a limited budget and is looking to only buy 1 synth.
If he (/she) already has a Virus then a JP-8080 (a subtractive VA synth) will not offer any (many) new sounds or facilities.

well Honestly I dont really NEED either of them. But I really WANT one of them  So in this case I think the most features for the least $$ works for me! The JP seems a little easier to navigate and it has more knobs and sliders to tweek...

The JP8080 and Virus overlap more than the Nord and the Virus. But overall the JP8080 is able to make more totally different sounding patches than the Nord. It totally depends on what your going to use it for though!

Going against popular opinon....

Go for the Nord! The Nords can scream like no other. Of course a little outboard may be needed.

nords are great but I really want to avoid having more outboard. I wanna nice streamlined set up. makes it all easier to cart around from gig to gig. 8)
