You want to connect your keyboard to the computer and then your computer to the synth module.

Yep, you need a midi interface lukas!

It depends. Do you have a MIDI interface (if not, GET ONE)?

If yes:
Keyboard MIDI IN -> Interface MIDI OUT (if you keyboard has MIDI IN)
Keyboard MIDI OUT -> Interface MIDI IN
Virus MIDI IN -> Interface MIDI OUT
Virus MIDI OUT -> Interface MIDI IN
Computer MIDI IN -> Interface MIDI OUT (or by USB depending on the interface)
Computer MIDI OUT -> Interface MIDI IN (or by USB depending on the interface)

If no (your keyboard have MIDI IN and MIDI THRU):
Computer MIDI OUT -> Keyboard MIDI IN
Keyboard MIDI THRU -> Virus MIDI IN
Virus MIDI THRU -> Computer MIDI IN

If no (your keyboard dosn?t have MIDI IN and MIDI THRU):
Keyboard MIDI OUT -> Computer MIDI IN
Computer MIDI OUT -> Virus MIDI IN

With the last option you won?t be able to record knob movements or other controller info from the virus, update it or backup your patches. In other words: Get a MIDI interface...

Ahh you have a midi interface in your keyboard

Your keyboard is connected to your pc with USB, and you can connect your freakin' virus c with 1 or 2 midi cables to your keyboard and your DONE!

Just buy 2 midi keyboards, and read in your keyboard manual on how to connect.

Good luck!

A MIDI interface is a box with multible MIDI IN/OUT. Good if you have more synths as it allows you to use all 16 channels on each MIDI port. A cheap interface with 4 IN?s and 4 OUT?s is M-audio?s Midisport 4X4: http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MIDISPORT4x4-main.html witch goes for around 875 dkr (approx. 115 ? or 140 US$) in Denmark (proberbly cheaper in any other country). You could also buy one used of Ebay or something...

Nah, just buy 2 MIDI cables. You won?t be needing 2 keyboards

this one is also needed ?

Vvanrij,

not quite - if the keyboard is connected via USB then it is best to connect the computer to the synth and leave the keyboard connected via USB.

Otherwise the sequencer will play the synth via the keyboard = added latency and unecessary

Lukas, Onkel Dunkel was being daft about the MIDI cables :? although he and the others are quite right about the MIDI interface...

What keyboard are you using? If you are using a USB keyboard then just connect your computer to the synth and allow MIDI thru the sequencer.

If you have no USB then ideally you will need a MIDI interface. Let us know the controller keyboard you use.

You're right, BBBBBBBUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTT its cheap!!!!

Drammy

There is no different in cost, as the Keyboard is connected by USB.

Hmm, so you can get the midi interface for free then, WHERE???

Drammy

I think you are missing the point - If you have a USB keyboard, the keyboard is connected without MIDI cables so it leaves the M-Audio free to connect with the Synth via MIDI.

There is no need for any extra MIDI interface, unless there is other MIDI outboard in the studio. But Lukas only talked about hooking up his sequencer, keyboard and Virus C.

You said this in your original post, but you said to connect the keyboard to the synth whereas ideally it should be connected via USB to the computer as is the Virus C.

The sound card has MIDI I/O. The soundcard is the MIDI interface

Drammy is correct.

Connect the keyboard via USB, hook up the Virus to the M-Audio MIDI I/O and bobs you uncle

Haha my bad, didn't see his audiocard had midi interface

Anyway if the keyboard is connected via USB and have MIDI IN/OUT then he also have al MIDI port in the keyboard. Then the keyboard is a MIDI interface...

Drammy

Yes, but there is no keyboard MIDI thru and you won't be able to record arp patterns from the Virus thru the keyboard + the added latency of going down the USB and out the keyboard...

Drammy

Why should there be more latency on a keyboard connected to USB rather than a MIDI interface that is also conneceted via USB??? Anyway he wont be needing the THRU because he can just connect the in and out of the virus to the keyboard and the keyboard to the PC by USB (like if the keyboard where a MIDI interface witch it actually is)...

Yes my point Onkel Donkel, we on the same line :D

If I measure with my Remote25 I don't get any additional latency. The Remote25 even has Midi Out1, Midi Out2 and Midi thru, so thats a connection fest :D

The Audiophile 192 is not a USB soundcard!

Why would you want to connect through a USB keyboard when you can connect straight to the computer?

The added latency exists because you have an extra link in the chain if you hook the Virus up to the keyboard, which in turn is connected to the computer.

Research these things before you go out and buy a hardware synth.

I never said that the Audiophile 192 was a USB soundcard. My point was that the latency would be the same if connected to the keyboard as if you connected it to a MIDI interface that is connected by USB (like my own). I can?t really see what difference it should make. It?s still gonna go thrue the USB...

Fair enough sounds like crossed hairs to me - I thought we were discussing the soundcard Lukas mentioned in his post - the Audiophile 192... I was simply trying to help Lukas with his situation and with his equipment he is best connecting the Virus to the computer.

I didn't realise you were discussing hypothetical scenarios, apologies.

That?s ok
