View Full Version : Tannoy Reveal 8Ds..... and the great active monitor debate
Anyone using them?
Had a listen at a local store today and was impressed, but the listening environment was far from optimal...
They are a little pricey but Im not going to buy till I can get a pair of monitors I can rely on for a long time to come.
So I have narrowd down my list to the following:
Dynaudio BM6a:
(at the upper end of my spending limit, but they are just so damn good)
Tannoy Reveal 8D:
Interested but need a better listen, plus the ability to a/b between them and the other monitors im interested in.
Event ASP8:
Havent heard em yet but if the specs and reviews are anything to go by..
Mackie HR824:
Dont mind em. I would like to hear them side by side with the reveals.
Tapco S8:
The budget option. My flatmate has them and I know them pretty well now - besides the fact I would be saving over $1400 - they are great monitors for the money, but just dont rate against the others..
My TI will be here next week, so I figure while Im spending my money I may as well spend it all.
Also on the cards (hehe) is an RME PCI card - seriously considering the HDSP9632 - HC did you end up buying one of these? Either that or I will spend a little more and go for a multiface/PCI breakout package.
Also, my girlfriend wants to buy a pc so im going to sell her my athlon64 3000+ system (which i built a couple of months ago) and upgrade to a dualcore AMD system, so I will be posting and asking for help on that soon...
So, my powerbook and mc505 are both up for sale, and my system will be refined to the following in the next few weeks (yes im excited)
AMD Dual core based PC
RME HDSP 9632
TANNOY Reveal 8D monitors
Virus TI keyboard
Vestax PMC-50 mixer
1200's and a cdj500
so between the three of us there will be 3 sets of decent monitors to check mixes on hehe (flatmates own tapco s8 and tannoy reveal 6)
oh goody
any advice on the monitors much appreciated...
cheers

Look at the Quested range. They had some tasty new releases under the 2 grand region.

the quested are expensive but terific!
the F11 are about 3000 euro a pair.
you should look into the ADAM monitors aswell, anf10(with hafler amp or alesis amp) or the more expenssive models ones if you can afford it.
6.5` monitors+sub woofer (2.1 setup) will be better choice IMO then 8`.
in most cases you wont be needing that sub either.
about the dynaudio.... you realy cant go wrong there
BUT remember,no matter which monitor you choose, you must treat your control room or alse you will never get the most out of your monitors.

No, I haven't gotten that card yet. I'm not in a rush though, as I still haven't bought the new PC yet.
The HDSP9632 is still the way to go I reckon.
As far the monitors go though. They are the most horrid thing to buy if you don't know any one near by with a well setup room to listen to them in. Be carefull Blay.... Tried and trusted is the only way to go, if you can't get a proper listen anywhere - even then you're going on other opinions.

well in persuit after all those expansive monitoring systems i can say my opinion on that.
i have tr8xl -event monitors
they sound ok little shine on the mids alot of subs it can blow windows away, alot of broken glass.
and i think no matter what monitors u have every one of them can be learned and achive any resoults with any monitors.
hear them learn their + & - and u will make good mixes with them.
of cource more cost monitors gives u better position mix and more acurate picture but hell if u tell me it can be done even on 500$ monitors im sure not gonna spend 3000$ for another better soundin systems.

the arck in melb have the 8Ds for $2399, and I know they will come down further on that as they offer free shipping and the like which I wont need.
and I definately wouldnt by second hand monitors to save a coupla hundred bucks...
im already stretching the budget but I just keep coming back to the bm6s - damn you dynaudio

Depends who you are I think....
eg I spent about $20k there, plus another $10k by bringing friends there to purchase, so I always get a pretty good deal when I go there (and some freebies!)
They love me!
:)
Edit: And I agree with the other posters, sort out your monitoring environment, treat the first reflection points... that egg foam stuff is next to useless, believe me

Quested F11.
around 800 dollars per monitor.
some say they are far better then dynaudio.
(jase and blay, your talking in australian dollar right?)
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/BM6A
about the same price as the F11s.
A\B test is a must when buying rather expensive monitors.
also - you should ask the store to give you the monitors for the weekend,
mix on them.
second week- different monitors
3rd.....
only then you will know which monitors suit you and your room.

here are the Anf10s,350 pounds which is about 500 dollars. 7` passive monitors.
Here its usualy sold with the alesis RA150\300 or the Hafler 1600.
http://www.zzounds.com/item--HAFTA1600
http://www.zzounds.com/item--ALERA300
Both at around 200+- dollars.
thanks for the advice guys :)
the f11s look nice, but they are actually only a 6' driver... the fact that no one stocks them locally kind of puts them out of the running...
I think i really just need to hear the tannoys next to the dynaudios and the decision will be made

The old reveal Actives (which I have) are supposed to be decent "reference" monitors, not sure if they have gone for the same thing with these new ones.
The Dynaudios are definately accuracy based....

my housemate has a pair of the older model reveal passives - i find the detail in the mid-high range very appealing but of course they lack bass response. the new 8Ds seem to have addressed this issue  tannoys seem to have such a linear response....
however - when the dynaudio are so widely used in the industry and there is not much difference in price - it is hard to choose otherwise.
basically something has to prove itself to be better than the bm6s or that what i will be getting...

hi,people
blay,in your list of monitors i have listened 3 models:
-tapco s8:( great for quality/price,and good monitors in general.)
i listened event 20/20 bas v2 is very close but i like only a little more than S8 for stereo image and little more body sound.
- adam p11a: amazing on high and mid frecuencies(precision and definition too)but in low frecuencies i don?t like it,quite limited for my opinion.
-event asp8
it?s the best monitor that i have listened till 1500 euros.
all frecuencies is very detailed and very precise, low frecuencies quite over than monitors in this price.
i recommend listen it 8O
