Ok, this is another thread where you can guess if a synth is a VA or analog. I didn't use any external effects instead of TC Master X3 which was used to compress and limit every sound clip.

Here are the links:

prolly all wrong, but what the heck... :D

1- analogue
2- va
3- va
4- analogue
5- analogue
6- va
7- va
8- va (virus, i think)

Fuck, Im crap. No idea...

My guesses :

1 - A
2 - D
3 - D
4 - D ?
5 - A
6 - D ?
7 - A
8 - D ?

Now to really stick my neck out :)

(Revised this list after stick on main monitors)

1 a Drom?
2/3 Virus - different filter models 2-D, 3-A
4 - something odd - very wierd filter on it, more like a wave morph - V-Synth maybe?
6 - Novation
8 - Old virus maybe?
5/7 - no idea something a bit older?

If we get enough (still a few more) replies today I will tell the right answers later tonight. :)

These sound clips are alot harder to discern than the ones i posted in the other thread. Again im listening through laptop speakers (my headphones have broken). Truth is I really cant tell without proper monitors....but in the name of science ill make some guesses....

1) analog (andromeda a6)
2) va (jp8000)
3) analog (andromeda a6)
4) va (jp8000)
5) va (jp8000)
6) analog (andromeda a6)
7) analog (andromeda a6)
8) va (jp8000)

Furthermore, I think you used an Andromeda a6 as your analog synth. I think you used the jp8000 as your va. Both give out similar energy when not filter swept. I think if you'd used a virus or pulse it would have been 'too' obvious. Well, im making all these silly dedutction based on what i heard through a pair of laptop speakers.....I cant really tell....im just guessing

Looking forward to your answers.

I guess you cannot hear the difference between the clips with laptop speakers. I'm still waiting for 1 or 2 more replies before I tell what the synths are. All I can say is that none of the clips are from the same synth. The results would have been clearer if I had used a sound with cutoff modulation, maybe resonance too or a certain kind of sound but I didn't have time to tweak the same sound with every synth so I just used basic waveforms and sweeped the filter without resonance. I know it's hard to tell from these clips but all the clips should sound different if you listen to them with hq headphones or monitors. :)

OK, so each clip you used a different synth....?

Id love to be able to give you my best guess....but i cant discern shit on these laptop speakers.....ill tell you what I will do. Ill try and pick out just the analog clip...

Not the same synth and any two of them?

Hmm - Im absolutely convinced that 2 and 3 came fromt he same synth engine if not the same synth :)

This could get embarassing when you spill the beans - lol :)

Yes, every clip is coming from a different synth. I can hear the differences if I listen to the clips with my headphones and try to concentrate on how the low frequencies play, are the highs smooth or not and how the filter sweeps (yeah I know it's very difficult because there's no resonance). It's also very hard to tell from these pure waveforms. If I had used more than 1 oscillator, there would be more difference. :)

Ok here is my final guess....i havent really got a clue

1) analog (andromeda a6)
2) va (jp8080)
3) analog (Pulse)
4) va ()
5) va (supernova2 rack)
6) analog? (novation super bass station)
7) va (virus)
8) va (microQ)

You have got 7 synths? But 8 clips? Can I guess and say that for clip 4 you used Synth1 (which you sneakily downloaded late last night hehe

I want to see 1 or 2 totally new votes (only 3 people currently voted) and then I will reveal the truth! :D

Be 7 russian plugins and a stylophone :)

Ok!

It seems that everybody has voted who was interested so here are the 7 russians and 1 xyloponey:

synth1, VA, JP8080 (http://www.quandace.com/synthguess/synth1.mp3)
synth2, VA, MicroQ (http://www.quandace.com/synthguess/synth2.mp3)
synth3, Analog, A6 (http://www.quandace.com/synthguess/synth3.mp3)
synth4, Half analog, Super Bass Station (http://www.quandace.com/synthguess/synth4.mp3)
synth5, VA, Powercore 01 (http://www.quandace.com/synthguess/synth5.mp3)
synth6, Analog, Pulse (http://www.quandace.com/synthguess/synth6.mp3)
synth7, VA, Virus Powercore (http://www.quandace.com/synthguess/synth7.mp3) - Disqualified -
synth8, VA, Supernova 2 (http://www.quandace.com/synthguess/synth8.mp3)

In fact I noticed that the "synth7" clip accidentally included some pitch modulation too so it sounded more "analog" than it should be. So that clip is disqualified.

This demo clearly shows that sometimes it's very hard to tell if a synth is analog or virtual analog if you hear only a pure 1 oscillator tone. But if you listen very carefully with high quality headphones for example and turn the volume up, you can hear the slight differences. Usually analog synths have more bottom end and square wave sounds warmer and fuller and even a little hazier.

This kind of test would be interesting if somebody had time to program identical but more complex patches with every synth but this time I didn't have so much time. The differences between the synths would have become more obvious.

Btw, DS' latest voting coupon was quite good.

LOL - didnt get a single one right this time :)

Ive just loaded clips 2 and 3 into a wave editor - they are so perfectly similar and aligned they could be different modes of the same synth.

I thought you had a TI allready - hence why I though they were a TI :)

BTW - DS should be disqualified for knowing what synths you actually had - lol :)

Have a look at that Nord G2 vs Moog stuff I posted to the other test thread. Some guy basically made the same sounds on a G2 and a Moog - you can barely tell them apart.
