I have been recently reading up about the latest version of Ableton live and I stumbled accross this video at M-audio.

Kid beyond is a vocalist/beat boxer who uses Live for on the fly looping.

This is a must watch! 8O

Thats pretty damn cool...

I've been looking into LIVE as I have some work doing hiphop instrumental mixtape stuff coming up. Still trying to get my head around the logistics

The only problems I read about seem to be the audio quality for studio purposes. But for playing around live it seems really great.

I DLed the demo, but I'm yet to install it - too much other stuff gooing on at the moment.

I really like some of Kid-Beyonds stuff though. He seems to have mastered his art perfectly.

Aye. I've seen that video before.. He's really cool and it really shows how effective Live! is if you know how to use that program

Yeah so is Reason! 8O Hehehe.
That's not what I've read Tommer.

With that amount of audio processing something has got to give. It's just logical. Many people even give the opinon running straight loops (no stretching or processing) still is effected by Live's mixing engine.

Still, using it live or as an instrument is the way to go, but using it as your only sequencer isn't the best idea it seems. Reason is in the same boat.

Here's one of the many threads I've found on it's quality.

EDIT* Of course if you are using it as a midi sequencer only, then there's no problem. :D

Mate...any chance you get to slam Reason!!!! You cheeky bugger ;)

The drums in my last track were from Reason, and if I remember correctly, I think you commented on how you liked the rhythm section and percussion.

No I can't slam Reason anymore! Those colab tracks have alot of Reason through them.

It's just the mixing engine which doesn't seem to work too well - export the tracks seperately and mix them somewhere else and it's great. Use it as an instrument instead of a multi-track recorder and it's all roses. :D

I think Live5 might fit into the same catorgory (from what I've read any way). I'll test the demo out soon.

Just one man's opinon. Sorry to all you Reason lovers out there.

using LIVE rewired to cubase can solve this lose of quality issue.

I have friends that produce with Logic 7 and they say that there is too much of a quality degredation to use Live 5 in their live sets. These guys are psy producers, extremely technically knowledgeable and very picky with their production quality.

Why doesn't Ableton just buy the audio engine from Emagic or Steinberg and use that?

I'm not sure if that would work Tommer. It doesn't work with Reason anyway - it's still better to export everything seperately and mix in Cubase. I'm not a rewire expert though, but doesn't it basicly just run the apps side by side. Aren't you still are using the audio engines of both apps?!

This was one of the main reasons I was looking into LIVE actually. I thought it might be a good way to perform tracks out live.

But, before putting on the LIVE 5 demo, does anyone know what the restrictions of it are? The first thing I wanna do is import a completed track from Cubase to compare the quality, but I will need to be able to save projects in LIVE as it will take time to get everything into LIVE. Will the demo let me?

Reason's core processing engine is just fine - and has been unoffically tested to be so (ie tested to NOT impact samples being processed through it when you dont want them to be).

That said - there seems to be something in there that just saps energy out of perfectly good samples. In the end nearly every trance track I have made or heard that was produced exclusively in Reason lacks the energy to be a dance floor hit unless its is post mastered in something else.

Contrast that with random fekking around on the virus, v-synth and motif es with some friends around - even just running a loop for drums and messing with arps makes people want to party - nothing to do with my playing - that sux, its the raw energy in the sounds.
