...just met her today and I'm so much in love!

Sounds very much like juno106 which I had earlier but monophonic of course. I like the analog roland sound. The filter is better than the one of Juno106's because it's not digitally controlled (128 steps) like juno. The filter sweeps are very smooth. I guess I'm lucky. I bought this from a guy who said he hadn't used it for 10 years at all and I can say that it looks like a new thing. Even the bender works without any problems. I will never sell this beast!

The red one's fetch a nice price too!

How much did you pay?

I haven't tried to control the 101 with cv+gate yet but I have a novation super bass station which has a midi to cv converter built in. I still have to build 6.3mm plug <-> mini jack cables first to be able to use the cv+gate connections of the 101.

I know. :D

I know how you feel. I waited 4 years to get one with good condition. The color didn't really matter but I like red too. :)

Btw, the hoovers are sick!

Why don't you just rub it in a little bit more then :P

For a red one in good condition that's a good price anywhere these days! Recently the prices have jumped on the auctions here in Japan too, which has killed my little "sample then sell" scheme.

Enjoy FSD! :D

quick demos:

some sounds (http://www.quandace.com/f5d_sh101.mp3)
acid sounds (http://www.quandace.com/f5d_sh101_acid.mp3) , includes logic distortion 2 -plugin. Both clips have delay + reverb + comp. I wish I had an analog distortion.

Nice sounds. DO you not have an A6? Cant you use the onboard distortion on that?

Yes I could use that distortion too and maybe I'll try it but anyway I need a separate distortion for the 101 that I can use both synths at the same time. Also the distortion built in A6 is quite harsh and not everybody likes it. Maybe some kind of a tube distortion would be best but I have to try some more plugins first.

How about a side by side comparison of the 101 and A6 (obviously using only one oscilator)....Id like to get a feeling for how they compare....

You up for that?

Ok, now you can guess which one is which...

synth1 (http://www.quandace.com/synth1.mp3)
synth2 (http://www.quandace.com/synth2.mp3)

:)

Synth2 sounds great, squelchy. Wondering if you used some filter-env on that synth that you didn't use on synth1? Guessing, from the previous acid/sound samples (great they were too :) nice one) Synth1 is the 101 and Andromeda is synth2?

Synth 1 = andromeda
Synth 2 = 101

Subtle differences between the two. Both sound very nice.

Ahhh, analogue monos.....

You guessed right. In fact I was a little surprised that they sound so close to each other. The noise is different and the filter. With andro, I can choose between white and pink noise and I guess the sh101's noise generator produces some kind of a pink noise too but it sounds different and "older". I used andro's pink noise because it sounds closer to the sh101's noise than the white noise.

I didn't include any filter resonance sounds but sh101 is somehow better with acid sounds. Andro is not bad either but sounds different with high resonances. With andro you also have to turn the resonance knob alot to hear the resonance and with the 24dB/octave ("moog filter") it comes up very fast at some point and self oscillates very easily so you have to set the resonance very carefully.

I accidentally had some filter modulation with sh101 but it didn't matter so much in these clips.

Like you hear, A6 can also produce some fat tones with a single oscillator. It's just sad that if you try the presets in a store, they all have too much resonance or some other weird settings and the synth may sound thin. I don't understand the default program either because it has 2 oscillators playing saw + triangle waves and they phase cancel each other and it also sounds weak.

edit. Forgot to add this... :)

...and this: Juno 106 - Terminator Theme (http://www.quandace.com/f5d_juno106_terminator_them.mp3)

I almost start crying when I listen to that theme which I played with my juno-106 2.5 years ago. I could play that melody for hours keeping my eyes closed and waiting for those nukes falling from the sky. :P

I was afraid that my juno will break and I sold it. For only that one sound, I could almost buy one again. But I hear that they are coming to the end of their life cycle because the oscillator- and filter chips have started to break. It's Roland's own asic chip and they don't make them anymore. Why don't those bastards build some more Juno's! Well, actually they do but you cannot create this sound with Juno D or G.

btw, the Terminator 1 theme was played with analog synths (maybe juno?). T2 and T3 have some real or sampled strings. The original T1 movie also has some very special analog sound effects. :P

Dont worry about Juno 106's m8. Buy a Juno 60 and midi retro fit it. 60's sound warmer than 106's anyhow....win win situation.

Yeah, I've heard that the 60 sounds better than the 106. However, I suddenly remembered that I had sampled many sounds from my 106 before selling it and I just built an exs24 program with terminator samples and it sounds almost identical to the original. 8) However I cannot use the filter cutoff because the sounds were sampled with juno's own filter but I don't need cutoff with this sound.
