Tarekith what are the blue blocks you have used to put your monitors on? at the moment im using breeze blocks :( yours look kinda neat.

Tarekith

It's stacked sheets of maple, glued and screw together, and then covered in blue fabric. One top of that are Auralex MO'Pads, which actually do work IMO.

There are spikes on the bottom of the maple blocks to help decouple it from my desk.

Cost like $15 at Home Depot to make.

Cheers for that, I have the mo pads. Im not much of a DIY'er so what you are saying is get little blocks of wood and stack them on top of each other yeh?

How about the fabric? how did that attach?

the desk holding the mixer is an Argosy console. i really love it, although its obviously too huge for the room. i used to have a 1604 in its side space, but thats been sold.

one of the biggest and best changes i made about 6 months ago was to move the monitors to over so that they are pointing at me instead of on the desk, like a proper studio

2> is that the dell 2496 monitor? do you like?

2 questions:

1> is that a rack attack under the pulse?

It's Waldorf MicroQ. I always felt that the Rack Attack wasn't important. I also tried the software version and didn't like it much.

2> is that the dell 2496 monitor? do you like?

It's Dell 2405FPW. It's imo very good. Altough the panel is "only" 16ms (like the 20" viewsonic), both panels beat many new panels which are 8ms or even 3ms! The best trick to test the panel speed is to drag an internet browser windows (for example) with a mouse and see if the picture stays clean and whether there's shadow or not. If a panel is not so good, the picture and especially fonts start flickering easily.

bonus: tell me the allure of the xt K? (besides the knobs)--- ive always felt like im missing something with waldorf synths, i just dont like their sound, but maybe im not trying hard enough.
It's hard to explain but I have liked waldorf as a company and their synths for a long time and Pulse was a synth which I always wanted and was lucky to get one of the last Pulses ever sold.

I read a review of the XTk from SOS magazine and decided that some day I will purchase one. So I got this one second hand 2 weeks ago. I was quite surprised by the sounds it can make. Waldorf synths sound very digital (except Pulse) but they can make some very beautiful sounds. I use them for some distorted and heavily filtered sounds, some pads and about anything. I feel that my productions sound more interesting if I use more synths and especially Waldorf synths can give a very different sound character if I need it. I wouldn't recommend a Microwave XTk or Q keyboard as your only synth but if you already have some other synths, they give you totally different kind of sounds and make your music more interesting. :)

wait, no access products?
No pictures but I have 2 TC Powercore PCI mk2's running the virus plugin.

Thanks! Since then, I've bought a mic and a pre-amp, but I think those things will be sold soon. I needed them for just one project, and cant really justify holding on to them. As far as what is coming next....I could really use a drum machine of sorts. The MachineDrum is looking like a nice option. Ah - thats the headache I have - in a rented place so I cant do anything permenant to the walls. I really need to sort out some accoustic treatment though - definately cant mix as well here as in my old place.

Have to resort to headphones alot.

The other downside is my studio is in part of my living room - large open plan job - good point is its a big space, so not plagued by room modes.

About time I sorted out some updated pics after the new additions...

Yeah, I can't wait till the studio is done. I couldn't pay to get the floors
level and tried to do that myself. So its mostly level but slants by 1/2 inch.
This means no wood floors if I don't correct it. I am not sure what I want

I currently have someone that sets up sound areas for large corperations
that will help me set up the booths as well the the monitors and lines.
I am working on getting some Argosy consoles... I want to save for an xbus
and will have that in about 2 years time because I want to buy a new truck
next year hehe. It all might come sooner with the mastering and producing I
do. I will have that area setup so I can start making money for the rest of the
studio stuff I want to buy. I currently use Sony professional speakers (which
they no longer make) I plan to get some new ones and sound traps, and
other treaments/etc. I currently have about $400+ just in the paint. I picked
out 2 colors and my company logo to be inserted some where but the rest
will come. I have a $300 acrylic window for the booth coming in a couple of
weeks and a door with my logo and name eched in it. The lighting was
a little costly as well I have just in one light about $350 and all are controlled
with remote controls and are dimmer capable. More to come but I have to
afford the finishing by the end of June painting starts at the end of the first
week of June.

I've acctually got great news today. A new studio is opening up nearby my place and I'll get loads of time in that studio (as far as the boss knew I was the only one that they know will use the studio).
But i know aswell that it will be a computerbased studio with recording options with 'regular' gear such as guitars, drums, keys and so on.

Who knows, maybe I'll be in charge of picking up some gear to the place as they wasn't really sure what they needed either. They've just heard that "A studio is almost a must."

I'll post a pic of that place later on.

Hey Tomer!

Im using some material called "Tontine", it is the 50mm version, but I think you can also get 100mm aswel. It is kinda like fibreglass/rockwool, but better I believe. Not quite sure what the NR (Noise Rating) is on these, but it is up there.

AcoustiSorb is a safe, itch-free user friendly insulation material, which means there is no need for special safety zones or specific OH&S procedures when working with the material.
AcoustiSorb contains no respirable fibres so there's no need to use gloves, masks or protective clothing to work with the product, saving valuable time and money. Like all Tontine's polyester insulation products, AcoustiSorb has been extensively tested by leading authorities in Australia to ensure that its acoustic, thermal, fire and safety ratings comply with industry standards.

I am constructing panel frame from wood, and then covered with some cotton/lycra material which is quite stretchy, and transparent (mainly for cosmetic reasons). These will then be hung some distance from the walls to increase absorption.

Compressing the material? I would maybe just double the layers if I were you. I will post some pics of the finished panels soon, I have completed one, only 7 more to go...

I love it. SOme of the basses I am pulling out of it are great. Very Housey feeling on some of them. I love the clean shimmering high end of it also. I agree with the fact that I would not purchase it as my main synth. It definitely compliments the dark virus tones with some bright tones. I also love the EP sample theyhave on board as well. Yeh about the same - nice bright clean and aliasing free high end. And as you say can make great eneg bass sounds, good fast envelopes I think :)

I rather like its permenantly layered format as well - just like pref mode on the KS-Rack. The seq mods on it are cool as well.

Oh - and just me or has that thing got immense headroom on its outputs and/or a really nice limiter/soft clip?

hollow is that the fmr RNC laying on the mid shelf?
how do you rate it? ive read some super reviews about it.

Timo

FMR's nice. Imparts no character on the incoming audio whatsoever. What yer put in, yer get out, but compressed. Does what it says on the tin. :)

It can pump if you want it to, but depending on the audio source the envelopes can sound a tad digital when using daft settings. The attack control can be set so fast (0.2 millisec response) it very almost acts as a brickwall limiter(!) if desired.

Supernice mode is good, but I have to throttle the release knob back a tad as the release time seems much longer than in VCA mode. Apparently there are three compressors in series in Supernice mode, each with different compression curves.

Trying to find some funky blue LEDs to retrofit the current red ones. :)

Only cons, for me, are the lack of balanced ins/outs, lack of a dedicated power-on switch, wallwart PSU, and the inability to split the unit into 2 x mono compressors (it's joint-stereo, and no buts).

nvisible wins with his rock solid mixer....

I have come to the conclusion that for you all to have enough expendible income to buy all this gear, you must fall under one of the following categories:

1. You do not have a girlfriend.

2. Your job pays you way too much for your services. (or you are a pro)

3. You definately still live at Mum and Dads and prob spend more time playing nintendo than writing music.

4. You inherited money from a very distant relative (any close relatives would know you well enough not to include you in their will).

5. You stole it from my house.

I would just like to add at this point that I am totally in envy of all the gear in this thread.

I'd have the gear I have if I were paying rent every damn week!

What the deuce.. Every week? Do you pay rent every week instead of every month? Here in Sweden the tradition is always pay every month and then there is, every third month we get the electric bill, telephone and so on which is horrible since you can pay bloody much for acctually seems like nothing!

blay

I'd have the gear I have if I were paying rent every damn week!

What the deuce.. Every week?

Well obviously he doesnt know the frequency of rent here cause he has never paid it 303!

We pay by the month too (in Victoria), gas every 2 months, electricity 3 months, phone every month.

Lets see - I pay: (estimates per month)

$400 rent
$75 mobile/home ph/net
$30 gas
$40 electricity
$50 car rego (about $300 for 6 months)
$500 food

So i estimate about $1100/month - and thats without partying.

So if Mum was nice enough (and rich enough) to cover all this, I would have an extra

$13,000

a year to spend on goodies.

x10 since I moved out at 18 - $130,000!!!!

But then again - at least I have somewhere to take the girls after the club.

I hope you do a damn good job mowing the lawn Jase

Hey man. Thanks!

Honestly though....3 monitors isn't efficient if you ask me. After having it for over a year I have come to realize that its a pain. My Sequencer page can only fit on one screen. If you you extend it to two monitors...the line between the monitors can throw your perception off. I have recently moved my sequencer page to the middle and place vsts to the right and left and the mixer to the left. I have grown used to it but I still don't like it. Ideally I want everything centralized and just have one screen.

This new year I'm going to invest in the Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP 30 inch Wide-Screen....Price is $1274 to $1499. But once I get that...screw these 3 monitors...I'm going to dump em....LOL!
I fuckin hate it...LOL!

Anyone want to buy them with the matrox card? hehe

ten
29.12.2006, 03:46 PM
Ditched my two 24 inchers for a single 30 inch. Its much MUCH nicer to use than dual screens and the native res is higher so you can infact fit more on the single 30 than two 24s.

Hey GND,

The books on my bookshelf are:

(1) All my high school text books that were worth anything
(2) All my college textbooks that are still good references
(3) Music reference books
(4) Some of the Harvard Classics
(5) My wife's reference books
(6) All of my kids' books

We are a very nerdy family.

:)

EDIT:
I do not watch television with any regularity at all; I have not for about 14 years. The bulk of my time is spent working my ass off to support my family, being a good a husband, and being a good father. When I do have free time I use it to (1) lift weights/run, (2) jam on my DAW/guitar/bass etc. and (3) visit friends/family. That's my life, and I love it!

I have to shut the blinds and disconnect from the internet to get anything done... or I waste time uploading images. UFIP cymbals are darker than Goth.

The Furman slide out lights help out perfectly on the knob side in the dark. I wasn't using the AlphaTrack much at first but I spent a day getting familiar with it and I really like it now. That's my first Dubstep song in Reason/Recycle - Kode 9 watch out !

I bought some gear the last.. 3 weeks?

http://block44.se/gfx/studio'.jpg

No Virus? Nah, they have become pretty expensive here in Sweden.

I were going to buy a Moog Prodigy with MIDI aswell but backed down the last minute as it were really unstable and just to get it checked would cost me another 1000:- SEK.

I were going to post this picture when the rest of my gear arrives; Epiphone L100, more cables, custom paintings and my nice soft "lava"-lamp (or similiar..)

But I guess I just get to post more pictures later when everythings done.

Jasedee thinks of me as a fat person and expected a quite minimalistic setup because I don't wanna overload my table with stuff and for some Freudian reason thinks that my body overload wants me to seem thin on the internet or something!.. but that's where you're wrong mister! I love that fatty stuff!

I've got a guitar coming my way aswell and I got another synthesizer just this Friday; LEM Bit99 which is a italian (Hey, Lorenzo.. great synthesizers from ye old country!). I'll post samples of it later, it sounds just brilliant! I love it and used it more than my JX8P (which sounds exactly like a Juno60/106 but with no sliders to tweak but I really don't care as I got it for such a good price).

these are two tracks i made with a good friend of mine ...
he's more into digital synthesis (reaktor, max msp and of
course the mighty access virus) so both tracks are mixed of
most modern and real old-schools sounds - i hope u enjoy them !

http://www.analogwarriors.de/analogwarriors/downloads/AnalogWarriors(07_06_03).mp3

this is a classic old-school acid set as i like it, i made it with my
mental brother that died in a car accident on the 7th of April '04,
he was only 20 years old and this is the last piece of rocking analog
synthesis that we had recorded.

but all tracks are made without the Juno ... i will record some new
ones, but i'm still saving money for a new sequencer since i sold my
MPC2K XL because i was frustrated of the piece of junk non-realtime
step-sequencing engine !

Thanks mang. I spent a lot of time morphing this setup into what is is now. I'm finally just getting around to making some new tunes after a few years of trying software synths and learning how to use DAW software as opposed to hardware I've used since I started in 96' in high school. It's been a long road and an interesting journey but I still gravitate to hardware for some reason.

I'm still wanting to use Ableton and my other synths at home to make samples to load in the MPC and take the Virus and the MPC etc. in the Gator case for playing gigs.

Concerning the 500......You've heard right. Like most gear there's good AND bad. Even though the LCD and the interface is kind of cramped it still kicks ass to have massive capabilities in such a small footprint. Getting maximum firepower for minimal cost and space has been the ongoing theme of my setup lately.

There´s more "secret compartments" under the Virus ;) The XL-7 isn´t really getting much attention. I rarely use the sequenser in it, just the synth if at all. Used it alot earlier but my workflow is much faster on a PC and i hate all the menus...

Yes. The Blofeld is very nice and gives you almost all of waldorf's digital synthesis but somehow I still prefer the sound of XT. It has a more powerful, "older" sound.

Will take a pic of my set up soon.

Anything to do with the D/A converters? Maybe running the Blofeld through a bit-crusher might dirty it up like the XTs. Not sure what bit-rate they originally used.

I used to like the slightly overdriven 'power' of my Trinity's Moss in certain circumstances, and wondered why the Virus lacked that certain je ne sais quois when replicating the patches on there, and I eventually found I was actually (digitally) clipping the Moss slightly inside the synth - except it was later masked by the internal processing effects further on in the chain - but it was that process that gave it the perceived oomph in that case. I then started using the digital clipping in the saturation stage on the Virus for a similar effect. Who'd have thought it, digital clipping being sought after!

Thats from some RGB soft spots - we have a dmx controlled lighting rig in here that puts many small clubs to shame (the little silver controller in front of the decks) ;)

In all there are 4 RGB spot/washes, 2 lasers, 2 moving heads, 2 scanners, 2 8 way pixel boxes and a smoke machine/hazer all under dmx control from that little controller or from the computer via lighting software im writing. Oh there a 30cm disco ball as well :)

Wondered what that was. Get that smoke machine on and lets see some pics!

Got a couple of lights and a smoke machine too, but no scanner fancyness - a couple of moonflowers (NJD Blitzers, although my mate has nicked one of them, along with the smoke machine, b*stard) and a prism based moonflower (Abstract Hypermoon). Haven't used them for years though. I used to work at NJD, although they've fallen by the wayside (as have most other companies) due to the influx of Chinese imports.

Awesome. Mirrorballs are great, aren't they. I used to sit a moonflower or two in front of a ball and it'd immerse the whole room 360º with twisting/turning coloured light beams. Amazing in smoke.

Seeing as I don't use it now I've placed it strategically next to the windowsill so that when the sun enters the room it casts sun spots all over the room during day time. A nice cheery ambience. No smoke, of course.

Damn, wtf do I sound like, talking about mirrorballs, ffs!

Great pics. :)

Khazul

LOL - I like my mirror ball :)

The modern LED scanners are mostly like the old moonflowers - so they work great with mirror balls :)

Apart from the two lasers - all of the lightig I actually use now is LED - have a few older 150/250W scanners kicking around upstairs.

Jani, nice setup!

oh thanks, forgot to mention that i did build up the racks and desks myself, as i found it too expensive to buy a proper ones from the store.

it was only a days work to get those done. some panels still unfitted into the racks but they look great to me :)

Jani, you have a quick list of your gear?
