jp-8080 redundant with virus c?

I gave up on the whole TI thing for now, sold it, and bought a second hand Virus C for $850. This leaves me with some money to add another synth or two. I've already got a Korg Radias, which is great, and sonically a good complement to the C. I'm considering a jp-8080 or Waldorf Q to round out the collection. Obviously the Q is going to do a lot more than the jp and make a better complement to the Radias and C, but the jp looks like a nice hands-on synth with a good sound and it's cheap.

Any experience with all of these? Any suggestions? Can the C do pretty much everything the jp can do or are they different enough to warrant having both?

I actually had a Virus KC + JP8080 for a few years...Excellent combo in my opinion. JP8080 has a very bright sound that the KC just can't match. It is a really nice complement and is VERY easy to program(also very cheap). I sold my JP8080 when I got my TI since it has Hypersaw but the hypersaw on the TI range is NOWHERE near as good as on the JP8080. I might get an SH-201(jp8080 with vst integration) when it's going to be out this summer.

Thanks for the feedback. I might just pick one up since they're pretty cheap right now anyway. It's so much simpler than the C that I might prefer it for dialing up quick patches for simple things anyway.

Any experience with the Waldorf Q compared to the C? On paper the Q sounds like a pretty interesting instrument but they're expensive enough now that I'm less willing to just buy one as an experiment.

i had a micro q once upon a time. it was very nice, had a very robust, and for lack of a better word "plastic" sound. wasn't very good for anthem trance leads, but would be very nice for bass sounds and effects.

Now that I've had the C back in the studio for a couple of days I'm remember how much it's lack of high-end presence bothers me. It's just a very thick sounding synth. On its own it's not quite as noticable but next to the Radias it's very obvious.

I played a friend's Waldorf Q at work today and it's got a lot of personality in the high-end. Doesn't do analog sounds as well as the Virus but it does sound great.

maybe your studio can use that money someplace alse...
like on a dsp card which will give you high quality mixing tools and reverbs,
better monitors,Acoustic treatment,etc...

The C series do have EQ, also you can EQ in the mix. Shouldnt be an issue really...

I guess it is the "Dark" nature of the beast that is the Virus!

im not talking about freq. responce.
what im saying is that there is more to production then the synths themselfs.
mixing is a big part in making a great sounding finished product.

agreed. anything i found wasn't "bright" enough was usually fixed with onboard eq or post production

I like the Virus for what it is. It just can't do everything, which is why I'm looking for something to use alongside it. Most likely I'll pick up a Waldorf Q. Played a friends this week and it's my kind of sound.

I think this is the main point, I have got several synths and all of them sound the same but different. I hope warldorf does come back because I want to have a shot of one. From what I've heard it is not my thing but what you hear and what you play can be two different things. :wink:

I decided to try something a little more exotic since I've already got the Virus and a couple of good VA softsynths, so I've got a V-Synth coming in the mail. Didn't cost much more than the Q rack would have either.

The Q is still tempting though.

Nice one - could you do my favour with the JP8080 - setup a patch with second osc off, filters wide open, no mods and constant on evelope and just raw supersaw, moderate detune - a few seconds of each at say A2, A3, A4, A5.

I'm just interested to compare it with the raw equiv on a v-synth, TI and radias - happy to post raw samples in return for anyone else thats interested.

i need a place to host the sounds, as i don't have a web host right now. one thing i can tell you, hypersaw sounds a lot grittier than the supersaw does. actually all the waveforms on the jp8080 are very clean sounding, but thin in hte mid lows, which is actually good for me, since thats where the virus shines. just to compare trance anthems, one on the virus will be very heavy, and very gritty, where one on the 8080 will be very bright and very clean sounding

exactly what i was thinking

So many people have racks full of expensive synths but only have cheap monitors and no room treatment, which imo is more important than loads of synths.

I broke down and picked up a JP-8080 since I was able to find one cheap. Personally, I don't think I'd buy one in addition to a TI just for the sound differences, but the interface really is great. There's a front panel control for just about everything and it's very easy to use, like a Nord Lead.

I also sent the TI back and I'm shopping for a B because for my purposes the TI isn't enough of a step forward to justify the price difference.

If anybody wants more 8080 samples I'd be happy to post some.

haha, yae sorry about not doing it yet, been so busy, and lazy XD building a new computer, reorganizing my studio etc....now i need monitor stands and new computer screens....
