View Full Version : OS 6.5 Update w/ Virus KC and Tracktion 2 - NEED HELP!

Hey there,

I am finally at the point where I want to wipe my Virus KC clean (lobotomize it) and upgrade the OS to 6.5.

I downloaded the OS Update from Access's site.

I read the read-me/install file and I am reading through the user manual.

It seems to me that in simplest terms, the manual is asking me to do a few things to get the OS from my PC to my KC.

As I interpret them the steps they are:

(1) Download the file = DONE

(2) Disable Local MIDI Control on KC (just for safety) = DONE

(3) Disable MIDI Clock (Global Parameter) on KC = DONE

(4) Open my Software sequencer (Tracktion 2)

(5) Open a new track = DONE

(6) Select my MIDI input/ouput as that of my soundcard (M-Audio 2496) for the new track in step 5 above = DONE

(7) Load the file "first_c_650x352.mid" into the track in step 5 = DONE

(8.) Make sure MIDI In cable of Virus KC is plugged into MIDI Out of M-Audio 2496 = DONE

(9) Press the "Play" button on the sequencer transport control and watch the OS go from my sequencer into my KC... = FAILED!!! :x

This is not happening. My Virus does nothing, I don't see the little MIDI clock icon in the VC display, I don't see chunks of data refreshing my VC with a new OS.

BTW, If I play one of my tracks' MIDI files the KC accepts the MIDI and plays the track appropriately as per the MIDI file/current bank+patch selection.

I have referenced the following pages in the user manual:

MIDI Clock - p.44
Operating System Updates - p. 158
Parameter Selection - p.44

If any one can help me through this ordeal I'd greatly appreciate it.

Regards,

-Alex

Good luck dude!

Hey Jase,

I assume you mean I should do this through the Global parameter menu?

Thanks for the heads up; I'll try it later today...

Hey Ronkaz,

Thou art correct.

Here is a copy of the email Access Support sent me earlier today.

They really are a kick-ass support team.

I read this over and over before I bought the synth and it actually was a selling point for me, considering how much people on forums indicated Roland's tech support in the U.S. sucks.

Here it is, BTW I sent them the exact same email that I posted here:

FROM ACCESS-SUPPORT:

"Hello Alex,

Thank you for your mail. To be honest I'm not sure whether this Mackie sequencer is capable of transmitting the OS files or not.

Therefore I recommend to try this again with Windows' Media Player.

Open this program and set the correct Midi Out port the Virus is connected to in WMP' preferences. <NOTE from Alex: From Windows Control Panel->Sounds and Devices->Audio Tab>

Then load the "first" midi file into WMP. Play it back and see if the Virus reacts or not. <It did, perfectly!>

If it doesn't, then please check if you see a small "se" in its display (for SysEx data).

If even that's not the case, then the OS file simply isn't transmitted to the Virus at all.

If that happens, then you need to check any preferences for your Midi I/O device and make sure it is not filtering out Midi SysEx data."

Thank you Access Support, you kick ass!
