I like to shred... occasionally pull out a face melter. Im using a 1980's American Fender LeadIII with a 1980's Roland JC-77 amp. A few Boss pedals and a Crybaby

So you're in the enviable position of being able to crank the amp and mic it to record then Jase? Boss pedals are very solid. I've got a few here I've had for years. Got a crybaby too, but it's so noisy. Would love to get a vox, but.. Next matsa acquisition:

Got EMG's on me bass. Top class. This old Tele needs to be SILENCED. Bit like its owner..

The EMG's are lush... I had a couple many moons ago but I never got to the stage of actually putting them in my guitar (a Gibson Explorer at the time)

I absolutely adore my Ibanez RG2550EX.
I bought the original RG550 in 1990.
The RG2550EX is all of the original, just a little bit better!
I play through a Line 6 Flex Tone II.
Love it!

I've been playing for about 13 years, but the last 6 months (since my band split up) I've been so preoccupied with messing about with synths and Cubase that I've hardly played. Playing guitar in the house just doesn't compare with cranking up a JCM800 head through a 4x12 cab and feeling your trousers flapping against your legs (if you're wearing any!)

That said, I've got a Pod 2.0 and I'd love to upgrade to an XT - got more important things to splash the cash on first though!

I dont really play guitar but i do a bit of low budget recording latly.
Signal chain is usualy:
Jackson or Les paul (nice...) ->verious pedals -> Software amp emulation -> reamped into a fender reissue (not sure what model ? 50 Vat i think) or into a marshall valvestate>Sm57-> Motu stock preamp.
been thinking of geting some cheap ribbon mic ,Just saw an ad on Remix mag online about this new CAD fathead ribbon for around 150$new,
might grab one.
Anyhow, not really an alternative to a massive JMC or Recto rig but i get some useble guitar sounds :)
I have a cheap and cheerful yamaha pacifica. The thing never goes out of tune, even after loads of hammering! Which is more than can be said about my mate's vintage les paul, which goes out of tune just about every track.

The Explorer! Now that's a funny guitar! I'm a Gibbo wannabe if ever there was one, but that red Ibanez of Gopal's looks way cool too.
Alex! That's a monster, err, axe you have there buddy. I'd be worried about getting it in me eye, but how's that sound? Can one tame it?
Danny, is there not a patch update for the POD 2 to XT it? Not checked like..
Tims, Our drummer used to lend me his Pacifica Tel as back up for me own dreadful Strat many a year ago. NEVER bust a string on it. Good guitar. He'd fitted humbuckers on it. Electric blue it was. Sorry, sounding like Alan Partridge here..
And now here's Tomer with my dream guitar ever. The Les Paul.

My mate payed nearly 3k for it. worth it? you tell me...
Imo,the sound is in the hands of the player and far less in the guitar his playing.
I would say 50% player,30% amp,20% guitar.

Danny, is there not a patch update for the POD 2 to XT it? Not checked like..
Maybe there's some way of hacking it... :) Don't think so though - there's quite a few major hardware differences between the two units.
By the way, I've got one of those Vox Valvetronix practise amps and that's a great little modelling amp but sadly it's only got a headphone output - maybe I should try sticking it through the effects and filters on my Virus? Now there's a thought...
I've acctually built my own guitar (electric) - It's really nice and has a warm and rich sound. But I don't play anymore, the problem is that I am really unlucky with my hands.
Left hand = I got into trouble and accidently put my hand thru a window causing major damage to three of my fingers. And still to this day it hurts like hell.
Right hand = Last christmas, I fell (erhm..) and broke two fingers and crushed two of 'em knuckles causing ever more pain than in the left hand and I still can't use them fingers 100%.
Both my hands feel stiff and if I try to train them it just hurts. And I am noway as fast as I once was on guitar. I can't even play the keyboard anymore because of me old hands. They really do suffer because of me

Doesn't hurt to experiment :D
Sorry to hear about all that 3o3 - I had problems with tendonitis when I went through an Yngwie Malmsteen shred phase. I know a couple of people who've developed Carpel Tunnel Syndrome simply through playing guitar. It's really frustrating when your body won't do what you want it to - I think that's why I've got more into synths and sequencing. The only limits are creative ones rather than physical ones :D
matsa: My hands will be fine otherwise, too bad.. If the head is stupid, the body suffers.

As you can see, I lost ye old knobs when I modified it to get a better tonecontrol.. I haven't used the guitar for many years now.. I built it when I was 16 and used it every day for a year and since then it has only been stored in the attic.

Hey! Cool! Did you make the body all yourself or was it once a strat? Like what you've done with the tele style bridge. Ie, drilling through that and the body like a strat to thread the strings.
I take it you're a lefty then?
Hey! Cool! Did you make the body all yourself or was it once a strat? Like what you've done with the tele style bridge.
I built the body all by myself.. The design is even "mine" ie I missed a few classes and was behind in schedule so I had to come up with something really fast so I took a piece of paper and started drawing the lines. Once completed I saw that it reassembled another guitar but I didn't have any time whatsoever to fix that.. I really wanted two cutouts (both lower and upper). I wanted to modify the body even more by removing more wood making it alot lighter and probably a much more thiner sound.. Think of an acustic guitar.. I almost wanted to get a 50/50 hybrid but still.. Time time time!
I even modified the neck myself and made some minor changes to it. The neck was given to me from my teacher but it had some major flaws as it once was used a "punk rock smasher group" so I couldn't tune the guitar at first but after my modifications it worked great!
thread the strings: This was also put there in a hurry. I had been in Norrland for almost 2 weeks and missed loads of school again and I just had 2 hours to get it fully working and I still hadn't completed the whole electronics in the guitar and I had to forget all about my AMP-project. All because of a girl! Otherwise I would have a much nicer guitar and a really cool AMP to go with it!
And yes, I am a lefty.. (in every way possible..).. I designed that white plastic that is supposed to cover the electronics (I have no idea what the english word for it! - Plektrumskydd in Swedish anyway).
So I built.. about 95% of the whole guitar.. I am pretty satisfied with the result but it doesn't work any more.. Damn attic, destroying me work

There's something about Scandinavia that seems to churn out awesome musicians (especially some of the heavy metal guys). Maybe it's because the beer is so expensive so you don't spend as much time mashed off your tits as we do over here :D

Welcome to this forum's Off Topic section to check that one mate!
And whilst we're suitably off on a tangent, just paid ?6.90 (?4.62?p) for 12 bottles (4 litres) of 4.6% beer this evening. Finland's much cheaper these days. Sweden's still mad though. I think..
Back to guitars. Guitars!
The cheapest beer you can buy in Sweden cost 10:- SEK for 50 CL. But most people tend to buy cases of these;
24 beer = 240:- SEK. That is 12 litres of beer and has 5.3%. Pretty cheap but it just tastes awful.
And what is so funny with the Swedish for for scratchplate? Hehe. Plektrumskydd, hey it describes what it is supposed to do!
I'd love to get a new guitar/fix my guitar.. Get an AMP with some valves in it and my bloody hands to work.
Scandinavians tend to produce musicians because of.. erhm, I really don't got a clue.

Guitar rig is great. I dont use it as my soundcard so i dont really get very much noise. It can do anything from thrash metal to country to blues. I really is great. I have the rig control 1. Hey just really decided to look at this thread!
I love guitars, but at the moment I love the guitar FX/amp sims more than the strings themselves (could be mainly due to the fact left my guitar in Ausi when I came here).
Recently I have been shopping around for some new FX. I have VF1 and a SE70 (actually 2 SE70s at the moment) and I have just ordered a VOX Tonelab to try out.
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/dec03/images/voxvalvetronixheader.l.jpg
I was thinking about getting a Line6XT or GTpro (I still will get the GTpro one day), but I wanted something for clean realistic amp sounds with heaps of dynamic control - the VOX won out as it's gain stages are tube driven, but it still uses digital amp/cabs. Also the fact that these things are so damn cheap here helped.
I use GuitarRig two as well - infact I run it standalone on my old DAW because I like it that much. It's just after buying the SE70s (which have real analogue distortion) I remembered (since not bringing any pedals from home with me) that having more expressive tones the harder or softer I play is important. This lead me to trying the VOX - will let you guys know how it goes after I play with it for a while.
Long live the AMP sims!

How did you manage to order one to just try out?
Hollowcell
14.11.2006, 10:24 AM
I have ordered it to try out, but as they are far cheaper here than any where else, if I sell it used in Ausi I should make myself $100aus or so. That's what I meant by "trying it out".
I am guessing by the reviews (pro and user) that I'll end up keeping it anyway, but this sort of thing is very personal taste oriented.
Will let you guys know how it goes. Should be here by the end of the week.

Yay!
Just got back from the guitar hospital with my baby.
She's just had a pickup transplant. Ripped out those shitty old Fenders and put in two EMG Tele replacements.
The quality is very good. Finally a tone pot that works properly. The old one was useless. They've very loud and I'm very happy with the versatility of the sound.
But by far the best thing about them is... THE SILENCE! Not even the slightest buzz or anything. On a TELECASTER!
Scared my self shitless earlier. I had it plugged into GuitarPort with a loud heavy amp and distortion sound. I thought the volume must've been off then I hit the bottom E. Jesus! It was on and I jumped through the roof!
They're not much to look at, but sod that.

Well got the Tonelab last night, and since then I've spent a few hours playing around. I have been running it line out into the desk, so I can't comment what it's be like into an amp.
So what's it like?
Fuck me it's amazing!
I put it into "manual mode" (as the knobs pretty well do everything they have written there) and with almost no menu navigation I started to build patches. Couldn't be simpler for a MFX unit seriously.
The amp sims are like nothing I have played with before in the digital realm - that could be because the gain section is based on a 12AX7.
The dynamic control over the amps! Nothing, and I mean nothing is in it's class for this aspect. The amps are the reason I bought it and they are the reason it's a keeper. Even though you don't get a heap of amps, what you do get are so great. So warm and with a nice range of tones.
Some of the FX are pretty good, but at the moment I would rather use my other gear most of the time. I haven't put enough time in to really comment in detail on the FX section though.
I'm starting to understand why people rave about this thing....
And for the money - my god!

The clean sounds are what it does best, but some of the high gain stuff isn't bad either.
There is a 70 page thread on HC (which I found after buying the thing)!
It has a fair few samples which I haven't had the chance to listen to, but I am guessing they are pretty good considering the responses. You are probably better to listen to these as I don't have access to a guitar here.
http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?s=a89b998dd367bea34b19d479d40d5da2&threadid=656353&perpage=20&highlight=tonelab&pagenumber=1
I don't have the cables to try the spdif, but I haven't heard anything bad about it. I really like post processing, so I probably won't bother with it either.
I wouldn't say it's all that noisy, and as there's a NS hidden in one of the menus that works quite well, so it's not bad at all even on high gain. The main difference with this and the all digi amp sims regarding noise is that it really works like a real amp (it is a real "mini" amp afterall), so noise is where you would expect to find it, rather than being smeared completely over the whole sound.
I will dive into the FX soon, but on my first try I didn't think a heap of them. The compressor, delays and phaser weren't bad though. I will let you know once I get into it a little more.
I do know one thing though - it's a keeper! :D

Fuck. I'm impressed by the reviews I've read. Didn't know it had been out so long.
Have to try it next week.
The guitar port is ok, but I can't use it as a stand alone. Just joined a band and we all play over phones. V-drums, etc etc. Was using just a Tube Screamer and a Joe Meek compressor pre-amp up to now. Was about to buy the Line6 FloorPod. Fekk. Gotta check this now.

Yeah I read that review, plus many of the user reviews, but if I read that thread I wouldn't have waited for as long as I did.
Man, running that Tubescreamer before the Tonelab would rock Matsa! Also as you're all running over phones I'd say buy one for sure - some people get different results with different amps is all. If you're running into a desk it'll be easier to control the Tonelab as well.

Anyway, I made a little demo for all those who are interested.
If you want to use the Tonelab for guitar it may not give you a true representation of what you're in for though.
Read before listening: The demo consists of 10 seperate sounds, but to give you a little idea of the tonal variation within the TL, I used only two patches off the V-Synth - first 5 sounds use one patch and the second 5 use another.
No other FX were used for the demo and no time at all went into FX programming as I just knob turned between recordings.
Go to the Sounclick link in my signature to listen and then crank up the volume!
The last 3 sounds were played as to show the way it reacts to dynamics.
Very musical box for sure!!!

Wicked sounds mate :)
Been thinking of a getting a SansAmp (http://www.tech21nyc.com/psa_1_1.html) for doing this kind of thing - + would replace the V-Amp units in my guitar rig - after hearing that - might change my mind :)
Though the v-synth actually has quite decent sounding drive and amp modelling in it anyway for a synth.
Hollowcell
18.11.2006, 10:26 AM
Thanks Khazul!
I wanna be quick to say though, these were really nothing compared to what you can achieve when you program sounds (on a chosen synth/noise maker) together with the AMP sims on this thing. I spent a good few hours after recording this little demo doing exactly that and I am really, REALLY impressed with it. For amp sims it's amazing!
As it really reacts to volume levels (maybe you could tell with the last 3 or so sounds on this demo) you can program sounds to really react well depending on how loud you play them (very different to any other amp sim I've played with).
Also I spent time today programming the SE70 and VF1 to fit along side (or be routed through it) and fuck me it was great. Using something like this for the amp sims (and maybe a little OD) and then using the 100% digital stuff for everything else is a very nice combo. Although some nice old school pedals running into this thing has to be tried (unfortunately not by me at the moment as I don't have any).
As far as the amp sims go on the V-Synth, I have to say I don't use them that often for a couple of reasons:
1. My VF1 and SE70 combo seems to beat it most of the time.
2. I usually use all the COSM sections of the V-Synth to build filters, or compress. Please add some more filters Roland!!
Anyway for the money I do really like this thing.
Two thumbs up! :D

Thanks for doing that Steve. I remember putting my Virus C through a POD1 and it sounded absolutely terrible. Not that I'll be doing that again soon, but I can hear the quality was very good on your demo there mate. And just presets, yeah? Can't wait.
Khazul, I used to have that Sans Amp unit. If you're after heavy heavy sounds it's pretty good. Not that versatile though.
Hollowcell
18.11.2006, 11:19 AM
I didn't actually use presets there - I just set it into "manual" mode and used the knobs to tweak (read the manual for that one when you get it Matsa). Manual mode gives a "what you see is what you get" setup as far as the knobs and buttons go (kinda like using a "real" amp). I put it into manual mode and played the same 2 synth sounds, tweaking the Tonelab a little bit each time I recorded a new one.
After quickly recording this demo I sat down and tweaked my synth patches too - damn rewarding!! Could really tune my synth sounds to trigger the TL in many very nice ways.
One tip for any buyers...
Make sure you read the manual to find out what the amps do, as some of the vinatge amps don't use all the knobs they have labeled there - in these cases the left over knobs do things which aren't written on the face of the unit. Found this one out today.

Go to the Sounclick link in my signature to listen and then crank up the volume!
The last 3 sounds were played as to show the way it reacts to dynamics.
Very musical box for sure!!!
Blimey, that does sound evil. Certainly more dynamic than the things that come out of NI Guitar Rig, Steve!
You have a tube screamer, Matsa? Bet that's awesome. I have a little plugin that I guess tries to emulate it, think it was a freebie from the SimulAnalog set, sounds really nice in itself (for what it is) but am sure the real deal sounds 10 times better!

Yeah the second to last and last sounds of the demo show a little of what it can do in that regard - that second to last one has "run a 303 through me" all over it!
Programming the actual synth sounds (which I didn't do fo that demo) so they work on that edge really brings this thing to life. Playing with velocity curves, velocity amounts - EQ, cutoff/rez etc all create a really musical amp like experience.
I really like it for what I am aiming for. :D

OK, guys...
I was talking about programming my V-Synth to match the Tonelab, well I uploaded a demo to show just that.
Go to my soundclick and look for "Tonelab Demo 2 (real)" to listen.
For this one I programmed a few V-Synth sounds to fit the Tonelab, then I added external distortion (before or after the TL depending), crushed the living shit out of it and converted it to MP3.
EDIT: Tonelab demo one will be deleted soon as this demo matches more to what I think the Tonelab is capable of.

I can live with the Line 6. It's not that bad.

Just did this with the Ibanez wah. The pedal's pretty good. You can adjust all the frequencies, depth etc. Pretty quiet. Solid metal construction. Best wah I've ever had definitely.
Hope this works:

The bass is my Spector and the drums were programmed using Artist Grooves and Kompakt. It's done in Sonar 2. Headphone mix, pretty basic.
