I have Pro Tools and I need to switch, for obvious reasons (no RTA support). I just wanted to take a poll and see whats prefered amongst Virus users... feel free to explain.
Thanks,
Dan

I voted Cubase - only because I have used it for over 15 years.
I actually like Logic but don't have any need to buy a Mac...

I have Sonar Le 5... maybe I should give it another try. It came factory installed on my neko, I just uninstalled sonar and pro tools on it.

You forgot Logic 5.5.1 PC
So it should be
Cubase
Sonar
Pro tools
Logic Mac
Logic 5.5.1 PC
Ableton Live

Yeah I wasn't sure if you were serious, I have always written fruity loops off as entry level crap... but I went to the website and checked out their latest software, it looks nice.

Well I talked it over with my other keyboard player and he said he'd loan me the $800 dollars to buy Cubase tomorrow.
Thanks for your help fellas,

Yikes! Does Cubase cost 800$?
Does it come with a manual these days at least?
Sorry for a less than useless appraisal of Sonar before. OK. It sounds great. VST support now. Assign any knobs you have to control any parameter in mixer, soft synths or effects. Audio quantise, stretch, midi follow audio. Track folders. Manual. Nice after sales girl called Janice. Last one I made up.

With the pro bundle package its around 800, I decided to go with the 400 dollar version which excludes the bundles... just in case I don't like it.
I have sonar, I just never got into it.

Cubase All The Way :)
Logic stinks. Well versions 4-6 were CACA!
I have played with Logic 7 on a MAC and its quite an improvement.
Much better.
Can't wait to get Cubase 4 :)

How much do we love our sequencers?
I love Sonar. I'd never give it up for anything.
Respect to all you boys. Let's ROCK.

and Sonar 5 in a pinch... I'd like to try Cubase, but not for 800 clams. Live does not have the robust midi and syx control I'd like such as storing and uploaded patches, but you can create arrangements and add some randomization hella fast. instant grat.
Cubase because it keeps getting better, ie play order track, external instruments / eternal fx and the rest.
Sonar is second choice, if I had to learn another app.

I am very happy with my purchase, Cubase Studio 4 can do everything that Pro Tools can do plus more. You can also record in 32 bit...
The Virus Control works awesome with Cubase!

Use Cubase SX and upgraded to V4 then finally came to my senses a few weeks ago and bought Live 6 - wow!!!! whats a hell of a difference it has made.
Suddenly its all spontaneous again - not getting bogged down in focussing on and being distracted by a DAW.
You see Live 6 is as much a musical instrumet as something like an AKAI MPC. Cubase is just a bloody HD recorder and mixing desk - its what you track music with, what you do mixing post production on - it aint what you *make* music in...
I liek Live - I actually find myself staying in musician/dj mode when Im using it, cubase allways makes me think like and audio engineer - which is a bad (too focussed) state of mind to be in for gettting in the zone and make some noise with a good vibe to it.

very well put Khazul. I was going to write something similar when I got out of work, but you beat me to it :)
Keep in mind, I am a big fan of cubase. Started using cubase back in the 3.7 days, upgraded to version 5.x, then moved over to sx1, then to 2 and finally on to 3. It was kind of a fluke that I picked up Ableton.
Took me a while to really get good at using ableton (the session view was a whole new way of thinking for me) and now that I have a year of experience with it, I have to say, hands down Live is most functional and flexible daw for me. Live lets a musician be a musician (while still giving you all the capabilities of a world class daw). I couldn't imaging try to compose again on cubase.
Up to this point, I still had been doing my mastering in cubase, but am now bringing this phase over to Live as well.
It's just an all around great piece of software.

My main problem with live so far is that when you using high latency plugins (UAD mastering suite for eg), then the visible location of the sings point ceases to have much relationship with what you hear.
And so when you staring at audio waveforms looking for a specific bit that you want to tweak then you need to disable/remove all the high latency plugins so you can see what your doing again.
I dont ever remember Cubase SX3/4 compounding latency to this extent - I think live seems to add a whole laods of extra latency between plugins that way above that added by Cubase.
Hence I find myself having to keep high latency plugs out and use cheapo compressors where I would rather be using a UAD compresor for eg.
The song position marker definately needs latency compensation applying to it, or the option to compensate it.
Otherwise, excellent application.

Couldn't you spend more time composing / idea making in Reason or Stylus RMX within Cubase or any of the top sequencer's to keep that "groove" /MPC type workflow going?

i use sonar 4 PE on my laptop but my primary DAW is a mac and i have Logic Pro running on it. Logic is quite a handful until you get used to it, i personally felt that Sonar was the easiest for me to pick up and start recording with right away though.
i tried a bunch of demos including Cubase. i couldnt make a single sound out of it after messing with it for 10 minutes so i uninstalled and never looked back. thats just me though.
i've never messed with Digital Performer but it looks pretty darn cool.
i occassionally use Garageband 3 as well just for testing ideas and such.
