Oh dear, it's that time again. Well, my 5 year old machine is now having trouble hacking it, so time to build a new one.

What kind of motherboard, processor, memory and drives would you recommend?

I'm running Sonar 6, Stylus RMX, Guitar Rig, Albino, Kontakt and Waves plugs. Sonar can run 64bit.

Cheers
Matt

If you can wait, Intel is going to cut their processor prices _alot_ in a couple of months because amd will start selling new more powerful chips and intel will also have a new line of processors and the core 2 duo will no more be the best chip on the market. I've read rumors of 75% intel price cuts. So, maybe around september or october would be the best time to buy a new computer. Intel processor prices have been about the same for the last year and the price cut is coming so right now is not a very good time to buy a new intel processor.

Yeah, I'd also not bother with 64bit. It has limited support for drivers and all that. I would check all your hardware and see if 64bit drivers are available for you graphics card etc.

I'd build something like this:

Mobo: Asus P5B Deluxe
CPU: Intel E6600 at least with 4mb
Heatsink: Scythe Ninja REV-A (not B)
RAM: Corsair, Geil or Kingston, 800Mhz, CL3, at least 2GB
HD: 10k RPM Raptor for audio, and some Seagate for system
Video Card: anything without fan and no more than 128 or 256mb
Case: Antec P180b with minimum fans installed
PSU: Antec or Enermax Liberty 350w - 500w
CDRW: Any quiet model by Plextor, Pioneer or Nec would be nice
Display: Eizo 19XX series are great for studio environment, but not cheap.
