View Full Version : Snow causes increased latency with other softsynths?

Hi all,

First post here, but a lurker since I bought Snow ;)

I have a dedicated DAW (Windows XP SP3, 2Gb RAM, Audiophile 192) with Sonar 8 as my sequencer.

When using softsynths I have a hardly noticeable latency (256 samples, 5.8ms), but as soon as I add Snow as a softsynth there is a noticeable latency when using other softsynths. As soon as I freeze Snow (and Snow gets disabled) the latency disappears again.

Example: when I insert Stylus RMX, I can play the Groovemenu live and combine several drum patterns in sync. As soon as I add Snow this is over, the pattern start a fraction later and sync is all over the place and I can't play Stylus in real-time.

This also happens with other softsynths and is especially noticeable when using a piano sound, for example. Btw, I use the Audiophile's MIDI I/O.

Has anyone else stumbled on this?

Yes - it's a well-known issue with Sonar, definitely known by Access because I had lengthy emails with them about it .... but no fix.

I moved to Cubase !

Thanks rjay,

Did Access have an explanation for this? I still have Cubase SX3 so I'm going to install it again and see if it makes any difference.

I don't recall there being an explanation from Access ... I think you'll find that Cubase is OK, as is Ableton, etc.

i could explain it from a technical point of view but i wouldn't help a thing. fact is that this is a limitation of the PDC within sonar and only cakewalk can change it.
