Plasmatron Voting

The 'Plasmatron and Graindance Challenge (http://infekted.org/virus/showthread.php?p=286271)' was a competition where forum users were free to design their own patches to best fit the names 'Plasmatron' and 'Graindance' - both fictional preset names as featured in promotional screenshots for the Access TI-Snow and TI2!

Users submitted a short audio demo (which you can listen to below, in the poll), as well as their patches (available below).

On this page everyone can vote for their favourite Plasmatron entry. (Please also vote for your favourite entries in the separate Graindance poll (http://infekted.org/virus/showthread.php?t=30649).) The overall winner will receive an official Access Virus T-Shirt kindly donated by Access Music (http://www.access-music.de)!

(Please also vote for your favourite entries in the separate Graindance poll.)

Voting Rules:

• Please don't vote for your own entry. Choose your favourite from someone else's. If others think yours are good, they will vote for you in return, and it will all balance out! It keeps things more dynamic.
• Vote for the one that you think best fits the name 'Plasmatron'.
• I will check new accounts, IPs, proxies, etc. for dodgy voting, so in the interests of fairness please don't attempt it!

Without further ado, here are the Plasmatron entries!:-

A massive thanks to Ceri CJ, all of the patches in the whole competition (both Plasmatron and Graindance) are available in one bank!

[Infekted Graindance & Plasmatron Bank (http://www.infekted.org/virus/competitions/grainplasma/Graindance+Plasmatron_patches.mid)]

Key:-
BamBros - BB
Ceri JC - CJC
GJVTI - GJV
Hi Energy - HR
Matt van K - MVK
Timo - Timo
Shortbus - TJ

Some patches may or may not sound 100% faithful due to minor differences in the sound engine between various TI OS versions and/or previous Virus models.

Additional info by the creators, if given:

• Matt van K:
Virus TI KB used, with TI OS v2.7. The audio demo was played live without any effects or sequences. I recorded it to Yamaha Pockettrak field recorder.

• GJVTI:
1) Graindance (Virus TI desktop, OS3, Novation Remote 37SL controller (mod wheel/joystick + 2 programmable knobs of virus desktop), direct USB recording to Ableton (Ableton also provides 3 note midi sequence triggered from keyboard to ensure precise timing for main performance part, intro is played live).
2) Plasmatron (Virus TI desktop, OS3, Novation Remote 37SL controller and joystick, direct USB live performance recording to Ableton

• Timo:
Virus Indigo mk1 (Virus B engine) used, recorded live into Wavelab, no sequencing other than the arp's. 1) Graindance: Modwheel = Cutoff, Knob1: wav select, Knob2: arp note length; 2) Plasmatron: Modwheel = Phaser/Chorus fx, Knob1: lowers resonance, alters filter, and transposes up, Knob2: Distortion.

(Any other entrants can PM me if you wish to add own info.)

Lastly, Shortbus has asked to change his vote to Brambos' entry (as per the stipulation of not voting for your own). I can't change who voted for who but I have changed the votes numerically to reflect the new values (Shortbus -1, Brambos +1) as per the request.

This one was hard to vote. Plasmatron made me think of humongous digital wave pads but there was none! And when I listen to these patches it seems that Plasmatron is not one of those things that unifies the whole humankind, because everyone has totally different plasmatron. Remember that when you run for galactic presidency; no plasmatron campaings.

I was actually surprised how many plasmatrons had similar characteristics (although executed differently). I spotted several pitch-envelopes, high frequency LFOs and grungy waveshapers/distortions. ;)

Really hot here:) But thankfully after playing with patches on my machine yesterday the choice narrowed to two. I found both perfect match to the name so again my priority finally went to patch which provided more options to alter sound.

BTW, for further contests I would propose to consider another way of voting so that voters can evaluate each option separately in a range 0 (no emotions) .... +5 (excellent example). A side effect of such voting strategy may be - results are available only after doing some maths when voting finishes, but on other hand the voter could give best points for all deserving contenders.

Anyway, good luck for everyone here and thanks to voting.

Very close polling so far.

Of my favourites were HiEnergy's, Matt van K's and Ceri's, the latter two being really atmospheric, like wild, extra-terrestrial Martian territories. Really fantastic.

Voted for HiEnergy's in the end as I loved the thickness of it as it evolves, and it really cuts through. Easy to imagine it being used as a huge plasma-beam in some epic, real star wars type scenario!
