Me:

Recently I installed Virus TI OS 3.01.09. Since then my Virus will suddenly stop communicating with my PC using Cubase SX 3.1.1 after a few minutes. Playing keys produces no sound until I restart both the PC and the Virus. Since then I updated to 3.01.10. The problem remains.
Since then I reinstalled both OS 3.01.06 and reinstalled the Virus Control. The problem remains when using Cubase. Sometimes the breakdown happens gradually, and I hear pops and clicks which build in intensity until it is very loud. This noise continues after closing Cubase. It will also happen when I change preset parameters using no digital workstation. I have tried using factory reset by holding down ARP EDIT when powering on. This restores sound on the keys but the problem repeats when using Cubase for a few minutes.
Until the time this happens in Cubase I notice when playing sounds on two channels with one sound on USB1 and one sound on USB2, the sound on USB1 will fade in volume and gradually restore itself over a few seconds after stopping playing USB sounds.

Thank you for your email. In this case I recommend to remove the entire TI OS suite from your PC, but disconnect the TI from the computer beforehand. So remove the TI software with the help of the Windows Control Panel in the START menu and after that shut down the PC, wait a few seconds and then restart it.

Whenever this is done, try installing the OS 3.0.1.09 again, but put the TI hardware into USB UPDATE MODE before doing so:

- unplug the power from your Virus TI and remove any other cable going from/to the TI. Wait approximately 30-60 seconds. While plugging back in the power only, hold down the EXIT button. This will force the unit into USB BIOS UPDATE MODE. Do *NOT* connect the TI back to the computer before the installer asks you to do so.

Now run the installer and check if everything installs fine and if the TI hardware gets loaded with the OS once again. Then check if the problem persists.

If it does, please disconnect all other USB devices except the TI and mouse/keyboard and check it again.

Thank you for your quick response. I appreciate your help very much. I have performed the recommendations you have provided per your instructions and the same problem remains. Nothing has changed. I am very worried about this because I have many live bookings throughout Europe this summer and I depend upon my Virus TI as part of my live act. I have been a loyal Virus owner for 1 1/2 years and I absolutely love this synthesizer. I have not had any problems until very recently and quite frankly I do not know what I would do with myself if I could not make music on my Virus.

Do you have a Windows system restore function activated on your PC and if so, can you go back to the state prior to installing OS 3.0.1.09 to see if this helps?

Me:

Here is the state of my problem so far.

Windows created a system restore point before Virus OS 3.01.09 was installed. I initiated System Restore to that point, opened Cubase, and attempted to play with a project. I noticed that virus versions still read 3.01.09 in Virus Control. Within the first two minutes of use there was an error and all 16 Virus channels sent MIDI to channel 1 in Virus Control.

The problem also remains with one sound canceling another in Cubase. When a sound is playing on MIDI ch. 1 through USB 1, if I play a sound on MIDI ch. 2 through USB 2, and set that patch volume to 0 in Virus Control, the sound playing on Ch. 1 USB 1 will still fade in and out of volume, confirmed by looking at the Mixer in Cubase. The sound will gradually restore itself a few seconds after I stop playng notes in Ch. 2 USB 2, regardless of that patch's volume in Virus Control.

I initiated another System Restore to an earlier date and every problem remains the same.

I was also able to force audio artifacts (clicks/pops instead of intended sound) in patches by selecting Free Tape Delay and turning up Time and Feedback there within Cubase. The Virus eventually froze and all lights began blinking randomly. I was not able to shut off the Virus so I had to pull the power cord to get it to stop making this noise. (Feedback was at 0 at this point.)

I cross-referenced this problem by modulating Free Tape Delay while the Virus was not connected to the PC at all and was able to repeat this problem within a few seconds of trying.

What else can I do? I am desperately needing my wonderful Virus to be repaired so I can begin making music again... :(
