View Full Version : Do you ever consider selling your TI?

Just curious if I'm the only one facing this situation.
I own Zebra2, just bought Sylenth1 and also am about to buy Massive. I personally love these 3 synths so much and I find myself calling upon them so much more than my TI for tunes.
I don't deny that the Virus has a very unique sound, but I have recently started to wonder if I'd be better off selling my TI and buying NI Komplete 6. It also bugs me that I can't use Instrument Tracks with my TI in Cubase, it makes it a lot more cumbersome to work with the TI in the Instrument Rack, especially when it comes to automation.
I don't necessarily need the cash, but I feel like it would be a waste if I wasn't using the most expensive bit of gear in my studio much.
What are your thoughts? Have you ever faced the same circumstances?
Thanks heaps :)

Hi - I am a firm believer that everything in your studio has to justify it's place and if you don't use it - sell it (you can always buy it again later if you miss it). I always go back thru recorded tracks and see what gear is always used or not used and I have recently sold 7 or 8 synths that were simply never appearing on finished tracks. I have found that my Polar TI and Nord Electro 3 appear on every track even if it is just a 4 bar section - they are always there. I try to be strict and I have sold Dave Smith Poly Evolvers, Ms2000, Micron, Blofelds etc and to be honest I rarely miss them. Hope that helps!!

I feel the same way - I want to sell my Korg M3 as it is gathering dust and I no longer do cover band or any commercial music, and now owning Komplete 5, I don't see a need for the work station sounds anymore. But it's hard to get rid of it as well.
That said, I could use the cash to get a Voyager.. (dreams).

Is this not due to Cubase instrument tracks not supporting multichannelled instruments?
How have you got around using instrument tracks with parameter controls ie filter changes/mod changes etc on a different channel to control the vst or hardware?

I think it is good to have some hardware synths in your arsenal, when you record the analogue outs on the Virus TI with good A/D converters, the sound is very fat. I have Komplete 5 and love it, but I like to also sample my Roland SH-2 for bass sounds, they are soo warm and full.
just my 2 cents
its also nice to break away from the shakles of the computer when trying to be creative

Yep, this is actually how most DAWs handle multi-timbral VSTis actually. The only way around it with the TI is to do all automation for all your channels on the VSTi track itself and then have MIDI channels with basic note, sustain, pitchbend type information.
Automating via MIDI CC is NOT sample accurate and timing does drift, which was really noticable. Going to VSTi parameter automation fixed this.
Other VSTis like Massive, Sylenth and Zebra2 are not multi-timbral, so it's just 1 instrument track with all MIDI, automation, audio effects .etc
:)
