Recording Into Cubase with Virus

Hello,

I’m currently running Cubase 5 with a TI Snow. Everything is working well now since the new OS4.

I Use the virus with the Virus control over USB and also as the soundcard (My Monitors plug into the Audio outs of the Virus).

I would like to use the Virus to record some vocals or DI some electric Guitar....except I can’t figure it out how to do it properly. I found some patchy info online but it would be great if someone could provide some step by step instructions.

I established I need to select the 3 out 1 in, however when I do that an error box pops up. Also is there some kind of input tab I need to Load?

Contact Access support but I am sure that what you are doing is trying to set up the Virus as a VST instrument with 3outs/1in which is not supported by Steinberg at the moment.
For what you are doing I believe you need to ensure that the virus is set as you sound card and in Cubases Connection panel you need to ensure the inputs are setup for the Virus and that the Virus ASIO driver is setup and selected as the main soundcard for Cubase.

Otherwise try Steinbergs forum.

Well, consider that the Virus is only a mediocre audio interface (at least specs-wise, it actually sounds pretty good) and it doesn't even have phantom power, which you'll certainly need to record vocals through a large condenser mic. Buying a preamp would be the mother of overkills (besides, anything costing less than $600 is a waste of money.) I think you'd be better off with a cheap but decent USB 2.0 interface like M-Audio's Fast Track Pro, which you can find on EBay for about $150.

I use Cubase 5 and the Virus TI with an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra. The Virus plays back from the M-Audio interface no problem and it has phantom power and has universal ins/outs for instruments. The latency isn't bad either.

You can do it... Just can't use the virus as an instrument and soundcard at the same time. Just use the eROM 6 8-6 >>INPUT<< patch to get audio through and make sure your 'VST Connections' are connected right. You can adjust the sensitivity of your gain by going to your CONFIG menu for Input 1/2. I find for guitar -8dBV, and Boost at 32 is good enough. It's a little noisy, but I typically throw a noise gate after I'm done recording in my signal chain and it works pretty good.
