View Full Version : Virus sequenced in Ableton Live

I have some strange things when i try to automate a sequence in Ableton Live.
For example if i record a synth line (i mean only midi recording) and move a knob on the Virus, Ableton seems to record some other cc parameters that i don't have moved yet.
So when i press play i don't have the original patch with only one knob tweaked, but a very different patch created by Ableton's crazy midi cc recording.
Someone else has had this problem?
If you want to make trouble free automation, do not arm your midi tracks and press record and tweak away. You will end up with vst automation.
If your recording CC midi make sure you midi track is only seeing the input you want, not other gear or VSTi.
Is that what you mean.
Also a common problem is with soft knobs and saving and opening a project.
If you use soft knobs, make sure you record their position in real midi CC or else the sound will go back to 0,0,0 on the soft knobs at load time.

Hi grs, i don't understand, how can i record a midi cc if i don't press record?
Do you mean alternate recording? (first the midi music line, then the cc knob?)
I got a Virus C, so is not integrated in the daw, but is like any other external midi controlled synth.
OK this is for TI only...
You make sure that the red button on the VirusTI track is off.
and press the record button in Ableton Live (or F9) then twist some knobs and watch the automation envelopes appear.

Yes, your example is Virus TI only. FWIK it's impossible to record knob movement from a Virus C to the arrangement view.
If i record a line in a clip in the session view sometimes it works. I move only the cutoff knob and i record only CC40 in the right way.
Other times i do the same but i got other CCs saved in the envelope slot.
I have not discovered why yet.
Check the input midi on the track in Live. Make sure it is NOT 'all Ins'
That way you can rule out other things in your set up.

With your last tip i discovered a partial solution.
I have the Virus C connected with midi to the pc, and a keyboard connected with usb; so if i use "all inputs" in Live midi inputs i got the CC mess.
Otherwise if i use the usb input i can't record Virus knobs movements but only the CC knobs on my midi keyboard.
Otherwise if i use the Virus midi input only i can't use the keyboard, but i can tweak in real time and record the automation as your example, but in a midi clip (which is what i needed).
So the solution for my setup seems to be to record a line with the keyboard, then record the automation after that.
That's not the best because i need to record and tweak at the same time.
Any other suggestion?
You can set two midi tracks to record at the same time, one with each midi input.
Look in the manual for you midi keyboard to turn off things like, 'active sensing', 'tempo send' etc.
You can also edit out the junk with the 'clip view' 'show hide envelopes'.
