Hi, I usually use analog and the usb i/o of my virus, I am running out of connections on my sound card and mixer.
Just wondering what type of cable would be the best to connect my Virus to my Motu ultralite?
I have seen coax and optical cables but no specific S/PDIF ones at my local hifi / electronics store? are they the same? is there a better type of S/PDIF cable? I have never had to ues S/PDIF
Is It a bad move to run the virus this way?
Cheers

You need a coaxial S/PDIF cable which is the same type of your interface. There are also optical S/PDIF cables, but not the Virus TI nor the Motu use those.
For the proper type of coaxial cable, read this article on Wikipedia: S/PDIF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S/PDIF)
I made custom cables by following those specifications with success. While you may use standard RCA cables (for composite video or consumer audio/video), this is not advisable because you may face issues.
Also, Virus will act as Master AFAIK so you'll need to proper configure the Motu. Anyway, try setting MIDI Sync to External and see if this way the S/PDIF Out of the Virus can be slaved.

Thanks for reply mate, I will try and sort a cable out!

Midi sync in Virus? Where do I find this?
Cheers mate :D

I was talking about the MIDI Clock parameter which is a Config Parameter :)
AFAIK, it is set to Sync to External by default, which is good setting for this...
You'll also find some parameters related with S/PDIF which are Source and Frequency. Source is set to Auto by default and this means the Virus will be synced to external audio clock. For Frequency, try first 48.0 kHz and if that doesn't work (maybe it won't work), set it to 44.1 kHz and make sure to also set the Motu to that frequency.

Well, ultra necro thread, but I'm just going to tell anyone who's looking that MIDI sync has nothing to do whatsoever with S/PDIF sync.
