hi
when cycling down through the 6 slots of modulation matrix what are the sources "Controller 3" ?
I understand an LFO or mod wheel as a source but what are these "Controllers" ? sorry if stupid questions

Could be an expression pedal, or other controller that you'd plug into the pedal/CV inputs on the Virus.
MIDI assigns CC (Continuous Controllers) a number from 0 to 127, some have names (Mod wheel is 1, Breath is 2, etc.), some do not (#3, #12, etc.), the matrix is just a map of source or "what input" to a target or "what to do", and amount (make it less or more by some multiplier).
So - if the source is "Controller 3", the amount is set to more, and the target is filter cutoff, any positive MIDI CC channel 3 input will make the filter cutoff higher, and zero on MIDI CC channel 3 will make the filter cutoff go back down to the default unmodulated amount.
If you have the Polar or Keyboard, you have two pedal inputs which can be set to whatever controller number you want. The Hold pedal can be used with a variable pedal but needs the tip and ring of the plug reversed. I've got my two pedals set to #2 and #3.
If you have a sound that is modulated by #1 - Mod Wheel, #2 - Breath, and #3 - Channel 3, then have your right hand on the keys, left hand on the Wheel and both feet on the pedals as described above - life is good - you've got three dimensional real-time sound modulation! Four or five dimensions if you've also got velocity and aftertouch running.

Yeah, and you can always assign the soft knobs for those controller 3, and the like, then set them as source for some modulation on the matrix, and voilá, soft knobs controlling those destinations... Of course with the added bonus that you can change more then one parameter at a time...
