The 550 has improved reverbs, compression and user interface over the 500....not to mention other things...(which im too lazy to mention now :D). But if I were you...get the newer and improved 550 if your budget can meet it.

Honestly...the reverbs on the 550 are amazing for price. It definitely gives you an idea of what higher end sounds like.
