There is FM in the Virus - it's just much simpler. The new wavetable FM modes offer something like the DX way of doing it as well, apparently.

OK, with Virus' FM does it work like this: Oscilator 1 is the carrier/Oscilator 2 is the modulator....so its basically 2OP FM with upto 5 algorithms (i.e FM types)?

Just wondering how FM has been implemented....

dear Digital Screams, the DX7 doesn't do "FM" if you mean frequency modulation... it's not the frequency that's being modulated

Osc 2 is the Carrier, Osc1 is the Modulator.

In Wavetable mode, the entire output of Osc1 (including sub) is the Modulator, and there are two modes available - Phase Mod and Freq Mod. Phase Mod is like the DX7 type of FM, I think.

I haven't bought one.
There is a shop near which let me put one through it's paces.

Thx Ben....that makes sense. Personally im really digging the DX7's sound engine....it would be interesting to see something similar implemented on the Virus. True Virus FM.

HC....your funny man

Why thank you DS.
Not sure why however, but it's always good to know that I cheer you up. :D

If you come by it again, please post the patch number here. I've been going through all the presets slowly lookin' for it. There are so many fun patches. While looking for Staccato Heaven type patch, I get side tracked playing with other cool sounds.

Here we go again. Plz.....enlighten me as to what Yamaha meant by FM then. Are you splitting hairs and referring to phase modulation?

IIRC theres a patch called DualiTI or something like that (Im at work so cant check). One osc sounds very close, so worth looking at that patch.
