Hasn't Liam been somewhat "misquoted" (lack of better word).
I remember when reading the article that he thought Reason was very good to quickly put down some ideas, and not speaking anything about the program as a whole. I'm not sure I remeber it right either :) Anyway, I have made some pretty 'ok' tunes in Reason myself (some might even be available on a record soon ;) ) The only 'real' problem I've had is getting really FAT sounds. Reason is great because of its intuitive interface which is something I miss having switched to Cubase (because of its better midi implementation) :) |

Cubase may seem a bit confusing after Reason, but actually Cubase is billion times more flexible than Reason. It is even pretty intuitive and very logical. |

An exact quote from Liam about Reason from the Nekozine site bellow... "Cause it's everything in one box and there's no confusion for sort of bringing in complicated equipment. All you're dealing with is what your brain can think of." Quote:

Hollow, yes that's why I said "misquoted" was maybe a wrong word :D
This wasn't really pointed at you at all :) The thing I meant was that, not only in this discussion but in general people go around saying that Prodegy produces their tracks in Reason (especially Reason users put a lot of effort in saying this in many discussions :)). As far as I can read, the only things he really uses from Reason are the NN-XT, the Re-Drum and the Dr-Rex. What do all of these have in common? Answer: The are all sample-players. This actually means that he could just as well use any other program that is sample-based (Who said E-Jay? :D). He also uses the Scream 4 effect, which is basicly your standard distortion effect. So, he actually doesn't say anything about the sound of the program, as many Reason users sometimes uses this article to argue for. |
Also I think that Reason on it's own is a pretty average program, but when used with Cubase (SX) via ReWire is where it really begins to shine!
Lets say I open up a ReDrum, take all of it's individual outputs and port them via ReWire into seperate channels in SX. This way, I can use all SX EQ, dynamics processing, automation, Plugs etc as I would a normal 'audio' channel in SX.....bypassing Reasons internal mix buss, FX etc.... I think Reason, if used correctly, and in conjunction with something like SX, is a force to be reckoned with! So lets take a look at how Reason should be used....... Step #1 - Forget about your Subtractors, Malstroms etc....as was said earlier, Reason shines when using ReDrum, NN19, NNXT, DrRex...If you want some synth action, use your Virus...and if you dont have a virus, go get one! Step #2 - You need to be using it in conjunction with a sequencer that has ReWire support, and Cubase SX is probably the best option here. ProTools supports ReWire with Reason, but is very limited (ie only 2 ReWire channels) Step #3 - Use your sequencer for everything! FX, EQ, etc.....ReWire channels are like audio channels, meaning they have full capabilities, not limited options like a MIDI channel. For each Reason instrument you have, plug it's output into it's own Rewire channel (which will show up in SX) And by all means, use the Reason sequencer for drum patterns.....or record them in SX as you would a normal external MIDI device/ MIDI controller combination. There.....I've had my little rant :) I feel better now. P.S I tried out Storm. it's SHIT! |

You dont use Cubase instead of Reason, you use Cubase with Reason! ;) Try it....once you get used to how things work, you will never turn back..... Gosh, I think Propellorheads should sponser me! I am the biggest Reason guy there is! P.S maybe we should change the Subject of this post to read: Arturia Storm Vs Reason? |

I don't dispute the tools in reason are really nice ideas indeed. However, I don't think the non-synth parts of reason are entirely transparent though. They still add a colour to the sound (which in some genres can be fitting or even complimentary). Just the same way an Akai sampler can add that "snap" to a snare. I guess I just don't like the sound that comes from it that much. Quote:

Bringing out ye dead!
What i read; was that Liam was tired of what cubase-version he was using but a friend of him told him to look into Reason; which he did. He liked the program (and hated the sound of the subtractors) so he sampled everything. So 100% of those songs is samples from his hardware/analogue gear then he'd use Dr.rex to get different types of loops from those samples. And he thought Reason was quite a nice program to have in his laptop whenever he got an idea, he could quickly put them down as a working mix. I'll see if i got some links left; http://www.propellerheads.se/news/ar...rticle=prodigy That's the only one left working, and it's an interview with Liam -> I had another link were he said something similiar - but he said; Subtractor was really bad, and malstr?m had some intresting effects but just lacked the sound-quality aswell |
Yeah....so when people say, "The new prodigy album done entirely in Reason...." it is bullshit!
In fact, he would have mixed through an analogue console, used none of the samples that come with Reason, exported all loops into PT for FX/Processing, and also used all his analogue synths to replace bass sounds There is alot more than we know.....I saw a video interview somewhere, just google it! |
