Logic Pro 7, a little buggy first version but gives you almost everything you need for producing and has very professional editing tools and feel to work. I don't miss cubase at all. I recommend.

Cubase SX 3 here,

Used it since sx1, love the new freeze and external fx print in realtime w00t.

A cheeky tip to get a cheap full legit copy of this (is what I did) Buy a 2nd hand copy of sx1 of the net/ebay mac or pc, doesnt matter they are cross-platform (got mine for ?85) then purchase the sx3 upgrade for ?100 from thomann.de

MAKE SURE YOU GET THE USB DONGLE WITH IT!!!!!!
Registration documents do NOT matter, you get fresh ones with the sx3 upgrade.

If you do it through a steinberg disty, they will charge you a ?25 transfer fee and want written letter from the person you purchased sx1 from telling them they sold you it. A LOT of fucking hassle, so do it my way and avoid all that shit, and you can still register with the SX3 reg documents.

All together it cost me ?190 including post/packing for full legit SX3, much better than ?470 its going for in UK.

I'm another Mac user who never tried Logic, i produce with LEGAL Cubase5.1
that i paid for, and it seems to be the most stable sequencer that i ever used.

I will upgrade to Cubase SX or Logic only if those sequencers will have some
really revolutionary new options that will make my producing process much
easier, faster and more intuitive, till then i'll keep working with Cubase5.1
Btw, once you get used to MacOS its hard swapping over to windoze...

It doesn't really matter what sequencer you use, because it's all about using
your sequencer intuitively. And it takes some time, but if you will upgrade
everytime when new version comes out - you will loose that time.

fl studio 5 user here. my uni has logic 6. something on their machines and its all a bit confusing for my fruity shaped brain. when i discussed production with some of the people in dj soc in soton uni, cakewalk sonar featured pretty well as one of those applications that you can just start up and get stuff done. easy as pie. i think floops is like that too.

i got ableton live delta with my soundcard and thats another application that you can just use without having to read the manual. very nice. it has alot of visualisation cues in the sequencer window and its very easy to swap loops into and out of a song that currently playing. those rotating visualisation things are really cool cuz you can tap your foot to the movement of it and it really helps you get into the rhythym easily, especially if you arent so good at counting beats. also, because of this feature, if you write tracks where the tempo changes mid way through the song, it helps to have a visual cue to show when this happens. very cool and unique. its also really easy to effect things while the song is playing and manipulate effects live. the interface is really uncluttered aswell so you dont have to fight your way through tonnes of sub menus and have to worry about clicking the wrong thing accidentally. i can see why they call it ableton live and i can see why some live musicians swear by it.

but im a fruity person at heart. as easy as ableton live is to get into, ive made so much progress in floops that it still feels like im taking a few steps back and having to relearn stuff again. so floops 5 is where i do 99% of my sequencing.

I'm VERY happy with Live. With version 4 there is such flexible routing options. I highly recommend.

HAHAHAHA.........VST is supposed to sound like shit by all the pro's...well, most people I have talked to think this. I agree....now though, SX2 is up to speed sound quality-wise, and now there is no difference between SX/PTLE/Logic.....

Oh yeah....as If you cant tell, I use SX 2[/quote]

????

If you ever checked alt.steinberg.cubase at the time SX first came out you would have heard all "the pros" bitching and moaning about SX and how VST 5 was so much better. And how exactly does a DAW "sound like shit" anyway? This would be an A/D covereter problem. Sequencers just move around audio data....

Nigel Harkness 16.12.2004 01:11 PM

You can make a song in any sequencer work to sound professional by running your sounds through mastering software/hardware.

Wrong,
soundcards doing much more than AD convertion, and sequencers doing
much more than moving data, maybe the pro's have better ears than you,
and that's why you talk this way. No offence mate, but go do some homework.

Wtf is wrong with you people today ?
Mastering can't improove a bad mix, if mastering was able to "polish a turd",
nobody was using quality sounds in a first place, and nobody was paying any
attention to their mix. The best mastering engineer with the most expansive
hi-end equipement can't turn a shit mix into a gold or a platinum one.

No that is not what I was saying. I was talking about the sound of the "software sequencers", that is the title of the subject. Alot of people knock certain sequencers and their quality but what I was saying, (just to clarify Mr. XLR8A ), is that as long as you have something good going on you can always make the mix sweeter by some good mastering.
