What's special about CC#6 "Data Entry" as Mod Source ?

To be frank, every so often Midi still puzzles me

Looking at all the modulation sources in the TI2 modulation matrix, there are the unassigned CC# 3, 9, 12, 13, etc.
And there is CC# 6, but in the TI2 it is called "Data Entry" instead of CC# 6.
Why is it called by that special name instead of CC# 6 ? Does it have special uses ??

Thanks !

A bit late to answer here, but...

This is a throwback to the early days of MIDI. There were standard controller assignments for a lot of things (list here http://www.indiana.edu/~emusic/cntrlnumb.html)

#6 - Data was just that... lots of synths had a 'data entry' slider or wheel and to keep some semblance of a standard, they all mapped to 6 just for consistency.
