advice for windows users
 

A good advice, make a small ntfs partition on your hard drive and set it as the system page file partition ; this is a special file used by windows when you are working, it's safer to put it on a seperate partition where u put no other data, it should be empty and reserved for system use only.
This reduces the risk of defraging the system page file and thus slowing down the computer.
- You right-click on My Computer
- Properties
- Advanced (the last tab)
- Performances (the first option in Win2000)

btw, the guy says at the beginning this is good for 64-128RAM PCs, but believe me, it's also good for higher RAM amounts.... i work this way since a year now, and i see the difference between my PC at work and the one i have at home. They are identical with 384RAM, my work PC is set up this way as described in the link, and it is faster than mine!

ohh...which PC are you refering to then Juho and which programs is it that the PC runs twice as fast? Btw whats so funny about the Mac OS, i think its much easier than windows. Plz share since you seem to be a expert on PC vs Mac

I read one of those pc magazines the other day and it said that a P4 3,1 was faster then the G5. They did the test with 3 different programs. But the funny thing was that neither of the programs that they compared supported 64bits cpu or double cpu. The pc was slightly better...doh! what was the point of that article...hmm

Anyways, i dont hate pcs its just that the Macs are sooooo much better to work with when making music i don't know why but i sure do know that it is. I've swapped from a PC to mac and i couldn't be more happy. (although im saving money for the G5, so soon i will be even happier :) )

The main problem with Macs is the price. If you want an up-to-date system, you'll have to sell your internal organs for the money. They're bloody expensive so they're out of question if you don't have loads to spend on a computer.

I tried that OSX on one messe. Felt quite strange due the one button system and the interface seemed confusing. I'm used to Windows, so even if I could afford Mac I still wouldn't change because only thing I would get is a new strange OS to learn.

well, juho, one has to pay for quality... we (pc users) have to admit that we have more problems than mac users, more unstable system and more buggy OS.

As far as that strange feeling go, i think it is quite normal, if tomorrow u get an additive synthesis based-synth, u'll feel as strange as that, it s just a matter of habit, u were used to take off frequencies, now u'd have to add them to get what u want, u just learn it and get used to it.
Same thing for mac, u'll get used to it once u are in front of the machine with nothing else around u, at least, that's how i appreciated the G4 i tried, i quickly got used to that famous one button click and took the time to discover the OS. I think it's a fact, Macis great :wink:

Well if you put up a PC with the cheapest possible parts you could find there might be problems. But even a good quality component and stable PC is cheaper than a Mac. I think the price of Mac is explained by the fact that Mac is more work oriented, so most of the Macs are in offices and in other facilities as a pure work computer. Few years back Macs had gained a firm foothold in certain industires (like in graphics and music) and that way achieved a status of industry standard. This allowed Apple to keep the price a bit higher since the companies that had years used Macs would gladly pay some extra to get a Mac instead of moving to hellish Windows-98-crash-o-matic and getting a new software. Nowadays since the release of Windows XP and vastly growing PC processing power the competition between Mac and PC has got tougher and Mac has started to lose its industry standard trait, so I say that the price of new Macs will drop in the future. At least I think it would be very logical scenario since Apple can't compete with stability and speed anymore.

That's true. You can learn it, but is there really any point in it? I wouldn't benefit at all from the exchange.
