How to make a hoover from scratch

Hi all, sorry if this thread offends, especially from a newbie lol! Anyway I did buy a buy a virus c especially to make some hoovers yet have failed abysmally in my quest!!

So I was wondering if any of you experts can help me on my way, otherwise there will be a virus gathering dust which makes me all kinda sad :((

I have tried the tutorial in 'programming synths' which resembles a hoover using the J. Edgar patch and found the one and only hoover thread but looks a little advanced for a novice programmer ( i use the term programmer term loosely- ha!) yet still miles away from creating the hoovers used today in hard dance tracks.

So any help programming a patch from init or modifying an existing patch would set me on my way to a happy and fulfilling and rewarding virus experience. :D

hoovers

see the thread about hoover time under sound designing.

btw, Virus is good for that alpha juno like hoovers.

I assume that you've read the manual. If not, please read it! At least you should know something about subtractive synthesis (osc->filter->amplifier->effects + lfo routing) before you can start programming your own sounds.

Anyway, a hooversound is mostly the effect of two or more (the more the fatter it'll sound) sawtooth osscilators slightly detuned. A square wave will do the job too. Assign an lfo for PWM (pulse width modulation) to alter the harmonics. To give your hoover sound a boost, use the sub-osscilator. Oh yes, don't forget the filter: a classic 12 dB LP filter is fine. You can use an expression pedal to control the cutoff frequency, ?t voila!

But I'm sure that Juho can explains it better because he loves hoovers :D .

Is that a function of the Virus c - an expression pedal?

No, an expression peddle is an add-on bit of gear that you plug into the Virus.

Really :o I had no idea ! Perhaps that can make a nice sweeping hoover right ?

Oh now I get it. you are pulling our legs aren't you? Well just on the odd chance you are serious, no an expression peddle can't make a nice hoover - it's simply a tool that works like a knob, but you control it with your foot.

I would say though, if you really bought the Virus to make only the Hoover sound it may have been a waste of money (of course it can make them, but it can do so much more too). You could have bought an Alpha Juno with a PG300 controller, made the authentic "Hoover" (along with many other people) and then had alot of money left over.

Well, your virus can do much much much more than hoover sounds only (as hollowcell told you before). Think of all the dreaming pads, hard leads, booming kicks, fat basses, etc... But as I'm wathching this thread, it's obvious that you have to learn a lot before coming a master synth programmer.

THere are many interesting articles on the net that tells you nearly everything about subtractive synthesis (yes this is what you MUST known). OK, I must admit it, the first time I've bought my virus I was overwelmed with new words. So, I just google'd my way through it and now it's much more understandable.

Have fun learning your virus !
