Reggae Mon...
After watching a Peter Tosh DVD, which was from a concert in the 80's, my friend from Venezuela and I puffed on some herb, and started fooling around in the studio...
It's nothing special, but thought I would post it anyways.... Vocals recorded with a Rode NT1, guitars with an AKG C2000. Bass is from the Virus, layered with a bass patch from my Motif rack. Keys, and Oberheim type synth also from the Motif rack. Drums are simply a rex loop from Reason, with some verb from the RV7000. Applied some delay to the vocals, phaser to the keys and flanger to the guitars. Other than that, there is light use of compression and EQ, and some tidying up done in SparkXL (2 track editor) Enjoy! Very nice. Only thing i can come up with is the synth. I would change it to another synth and turn it a bit up. Besides that it?s very cool :D

Nice vocals. Overall an ok track, but somehow this lacks the reggae feeling. Let's focus on the things that need some fixing:
1. Too long. This is a 5:24 lenght track made out of material for one minute song. 2. Where are the dub/reaggae delays? For example the last word of a rhyme is ran through a high feedback tape delay (and the delay can be additionally ran through a phaser and/or filter). Reggae isn't reggae without that delay. 3. The drum sounds are not-so-good, especially the kick, but this is probably something that can't be fixed easily due the fact that it's a loop. 4. More guitar please. The back beat should be stronger and clear. Now it's a bit too flat. 5. The bass sounds like it's drifting like hell, rythmically breaking the song. |
Cheers for the comments!
Onkel: I was trying to get that old 80's classic Oberheim sound for the synth.....it's not quite there, I know, which is why I left it low in the mix. Juho: Too long...I agree. Actually, one of the reasons we made it so long, was that we set up and started to Jam to the songs, with me on electric guitar, my brother on bass guitar, and my friend on keys. Delays....there is delay on the vocals, maybe not enough though. I should try accentuating the last word in the phrase like you said. Drums do suck I know....but rather than spend any time trying to program drums, I would rather record them live when I get a chance Thanks for the feedback! :) |
