Trance - Sub Melodies

What are your experiences in Writing / Using decent Sub Melodies for your Trance tracks?;

Not to be confused with Lead Melodies of course, but it seems one thing many producers get stuck with, or are unable to design properly, are the missing Sub Melodies which are designed to cover the *middle layer* / make the track fuller.

An example, think of them as a layer which go on top of the kick/percussion/bass line etc. Usually some programmed Arpeggiator pattern with shed loads of echo 5/3, perhaps some tweaking on the resonance / filter as well. Perhaps you might not even need to use an Arpeggiator, you could play them / record them by using keys, echo sometimes makes up for a kind of Arpeggiator in itself and also bass, they sometimes accompany that.

An example.....

Time to say goodbye (Envio) for the sake of this post.

I'm pretty sketchy at writing them, but sometimes get a little stuck.

For some reason I have troubles coming up with sub melodies.
I can come up with some pretty good main melodies but then I have troubles writing a submelody that relates to the main theme.

Usually I try a very simple and repetitive motif that I first introduce without any keychanges..then after a while I introduce a key change + a sustained pad in the background...Usually does the trick but I'd love to be more original :)
