Need Advice, About Soundcard
 

hello,


i need some advices, coz i want to buy a good soundcard.

i had an m-audio 192, but it has only two inputs, L and R.

I Have Virus C Desktop, and Roland Jp 8080 and Cubase SX 2.

i wanna a good soundcard to work without problems.

My System configuration is :

Intel Pentium 3 ghz

512 RAM Kingston

MSI NEO 3 865 PE Mainboard.


Could You tell me what soundcard should i choose ?

but remember i can spend 330 Euro on it.

also i want to record more instruments than one ... like a guitarist , bas player, pianist, ETC. i do not have mixer yet. but i want to record them on each other tracks.

to have an option to edit tracks later.

every useful advice appreciated.

I have a M-audio 1010 card. Now i know they may not be the best on the market but for price range they are in it has done me proud so far. It gives you 10 ins and 10 outs. Plus it is a midi device and has mic ins aswell. And all for around ?160.

But what you should keep in mind is:

1. How many simultaneous Inputs/Outputs do I need?

2. Do I need MIDI I/O aswel?

3. Are there any known issues with the soundcard and your particular setup (Check forums etc)

4. Do I need mic pre's on the soundcard?

5. Do I want PCI/FW/USB soundcard (I would recommend PCI or FW)

6. Quality comes at a price! Spend as much as you can, try and get the best. If you buy a budget card, chances are you will eventually want to upgrade to something better. Why not just buy something better now!

That was polite - I would say dont touch USB audio with a barge pole :)

PCI and Firewire will give you similar audio latencies. (For example, I'm getting 3ms on my motu traveler (firewire 400).

However PCI will let you use lower MIDI latencies (~1ms, as opposed to ~4 or ~5ms for firewire).

USB v2 audio was slower on the uptake but I reckon we'll start to see more of these cards as coding techniques and hardware implementations for it are becoming more refined.

There was an excellent article about the different types of soundcard implementations (USB vs. PCI vs. Firewire) via interview faceoffs between the largest soundcard companies (RME, Motu, M-Audio, Echo, etc.) in last months Sound-On-Sound.

I reckon they're a bit coy about what they said regards PCI-Express, personally, though. I think PCI-E will be *big*, when it comes around.

Agree with Timo in relation to future products based on PCI- Express. They won't be around for a while yet while the Firewire based kit appears to be ruling the roost. In the meantime...

A good buddy of mine swears by the RME HDSP Hammerfall 24/96k card if you are looking for a quality computer based soundcard. You can probably pick them up quite cheap these days on ebay.

If you would rather go down the external Firewire/USB 2.0 unit you cannot go wrong looking at either the MOTU or RME range. Try also looking at the latest Mackie Onyx range - the 400F is getting some good press and reviews.

If you are on a budget go for the MOTU or the Mackie range. If you are flush go for the RME range.

It is well worth you saving the extra bucks for such a critical piece of your studio. You can pick up most of the above on ebay very cheap second hand.

it has midi, 8 outs an ins,

so i can connect midi keyboard, my synths (Virus, and Roland jp8000) and studio monitors aswell ?

Hi Lukas, bear in mind the Delta 10/10 has only one pair of midi ins/outs, and also I think lowest audio latency is 8ms at 44.1KHz.
