Vocal+mastering project
Hello everyone,
I've recently finished one of my first vocal tracks (with me in the vocal), and i liked it alot and thought i'd show it to you guys in hope that you would give me some feedback and improvement points as i'm practising in my new-found interest in mixing and mastering. I have put a mastered and a unmastered version on my server: http://www.t7online.dk/Music/Clockwork/Clockwork.mp3 Unmastered http://www.t7online.dk/Music/Clockwo...k%20master.mp3 Mastered What do you think of my mastering? I didn't do any stereo imaging as i thought the track had a just fine stereo perspective, i didn't do dynamics neither, do you always have to use this? Thanks, T7 |
I like the tracks, the vocals sound cool and dreamy, almost like Royskopp. They have a commercial appeal to them.
As far as mastering, Im wondering what in fact you did do if there was no Dynamics processing? EQ and compression (both dynamic processes) are usually used in mastering. There was not much change I could pick between the un-mastered and mastered versions, mainly due to the fact of the MP3 quality, although the mastered version did appear slightly clearer. Both were near same volume (although I didnt check this through a wave editor, just through Quicktime player and meters). Your un-mastered track was quite loud to begin with, so I guess there wasnt much more volume to be squeezed out if you didnt use a compressor. It takes a lot of dedication to be a mastering engineer, and a real good set of ears too. I dont bother with it. You mix sounded great. Nice track |

I'll experiment with dynamics, the reason i didn't do them was mainly that i'm not too good compressors, so i better get practising:) Thanks a bunch for your comments! |
Listening to the mastered version.
First up I'll say it's quite a musical track. Strong structure and everything has been placed for a reason. I think as far as mastering and production goes, it could do with a bit of work. Really though that's not the musicians concern overly, but if you are making demos then it kind of has to be a little. The track shines through and that's the main thing. Nice work and thanks for the listen. :D |
