One thing I can't understand is, if around about now (end of June) is mid-summer, why do we tend to get the hottest weather in late-ish July?

Because the weather close to the sea (costal climate) very much depends on the water temperature and evaporation of the sea and it takes long time to heat all that water up. If you think about it it?s actually the same with winter. The shortest day in the year is 21-22 december but the really cold weather always comes in january and february...
