no more border!
 

maybe for you this is a common day of the year but not here in my city! Avoiding to tell you about the history of my city it happened that a border was built between Italia and Slovenia, a border who created conflicts between us in the past and still today there are political problems between the two States due to the bad memory of the war. Anyway, it's really time to forget all these bad things cos today we finally delete this border due to Shengen agreement! No more identity card, no more police on the border... nothing!

In the years after the war they built a new city on the other side of the border called Nova Gorica (New Gorizia) and seen from the satellite

it can seem to see a single city... now finally it will be really a single city without a border

that cut it in half!

I went by bus from Northern Europe down across Italy and through the whole of Yugoslavia and Greece to Athens (and back) 3 times. The crossing from Italy into Slovenia was always a nightmare. Those border guards always turned the bus inside out and took fucking hours and hours to do it. There was always big cheering when we got out of Yugoslavia, north and south.

That's wonderful that there is no more passport control. I'm very happy for you all :)

Remind me Lorenzo, where do you live again exactly. Must look in the atlas.

I live in Gorizia, on the border with Slovenia (the region is Friuli Venezia Giulia) and I know exactly what you mean with those terrible cues on the border... and you can't do like on the border with ex Cecoslovacchia where the passport was a good bottle of whiskey or any other good alcoholic beverage...

A mini Berlin wall in Italy. I would have never guessed such a thing existed.

Yay! It's torn down!!!

well it isn't exactly a Berlin wall cose Nova Gorica was built after the war, so there wasn't a city to divide... but the border divided families, friends and even properties (there is still an italian house with the garden splitted in half and the WC was in Slovenia!).
So we can't strictly talk of a Berlin wall talking about the city, but it was a big Berlin wall if we're talking about people.
