Low computer prices
An AMD Opteron 165 Dual Core 1.8GHz is now going for under €100 in Finland. An Asus A8V-VM SE VIA K8M890 motherboard which supports the AMD 939 socket and 2 SATA drives is selling for just €42.
 Bloody hell! |
There's a reason that PC stuff is cheap you know...

Jase you troll! ;-)
PC stuff is cheap because of good old capitalist competition! I think the Mac superior quality / stability argument is pretty obsolete these days. It's often just a marketing advantage for studios to say "Yeah, well, we have Pro Tools." Mac is still certainly an industry standard in audio / video, and I'm sure that production companies demand knowledge of the Mac as an absolute pre-requisite for new employees - as I believe you can personally testify. But hey, have you seen the Spy Kids movies? All done on AMD. That was hardly an amateur production with a budget of $37m, and they chose to do the animation and effects on PC. Clearly Mac doesn't have the monopoly in pro media production anymore. That AMD Opteron is a phenomenal dual core processor. The 2.2G model is just €140. So for under €200 I can upgrade to a 2 x dual core mobo and chip. My ram and PATA hard drives are still compatible. Not the latest pieces of kit, but quite a leap up from my old P4 2.4. |

Lorenzo, you big derr! Spy kids is a major Miramax release that grossed over $100 MILLION dollars!
OK, I wouldn't have seen it (them, there are now 3) if I didn't have kids, but they are absolutely brilliant hi-tech effects movies. You must see Spy Kids 3. Rent it next weekend and invite any little brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces under 13 to your place to watch it. You'll be Il Duce for a day ;-) Directed by Robert Rodriguez no-less. The bloke who did Sin City with Tarantino? Oh, bloody hell. Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spy_Kids http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Rodriguez |

Certainly computers and components are getting so cheap now considering the power they pack. It's getting to a point when even the cheapest computers are relatively good. For self builders an Intel Core 2 quad-core 2.4GHz CPU is £150, which is great value. Hard-drives are so cheap, too. My bro just bought a laptop for £400 (Toshiba A200-1VO), and I was really worried how it would cope with Vista as it had integrated graphics (they all are at that price-point), but I was really very impressed. It's never been so good for consumers. |
