Best way to plug virus ti in..?

I have a bit of a confusing set up at the moment and need to sort it out for the best sound quality and stability...

Currently I have my virus ti connected to the pc via usb but not as my main soundcard..

My main card is an Edirol M16DX usb mixer to which the virus connects to via SPDIF.

I also have an Emu 0404 pci which Ive recently removed.

Because the virus and the edirol are both connected together via spdif and to the pc via usb they seem to want to fight over who has the master clock and it is causing the mixer to mute and making me have to fiddle a bit when I switch the gear on.

Im thinking about scrapping the setup and trying a different way , do you think I should..

A) Use the Edirol as a mixer and not as a soundcard. Have it output its mixdown channels to the virus SPDIF input and use the virus as the main soundcard

B) disconnect the virus's pc audio (can I do this and still control the synth via usb midi?).
Connect the virus to the Edirol mixer via analogue outputs and use the Edirol via its usb as a 16 input soundcard.

C) Plug the Emu 0404 pci back in the pc (slightly better latency), use the edirol as one would use an analogue mixer and the virus as any normal synth via midi/analogue outs.

cheers .. :)

Hiya,

I haven't got a TI myself, but I've just noticed in the TI Manual that you can select whether the TI uses its own internal clock or one over USB/spdif, or sync'd via a host.

Are they both set to the same frequencies, too?

Otherwise you could try connecting the Virus up to the s/pdif on the 0404. The PCI would stand to offer better latency than going into the M16DX and being transferred again over USB.

If all else fails I'd otherwise be tempted to use the TI's balanced analogue outputs into the M16DX mixer as it would retain the 24-bit/96KHz sound quality from the TI, but the added USB connection may increase latency a touch.

I'm unsure as to whether the TI can use VC over standard Midi. I only have an Indigo v1 myself, so I'm still in the dark ages using SoundDiver! :)

yeah its plainly bonkers to be honest..

the virus clock is slaved off the mixer, which is slaved from the pc, which depending on what software is running, is slaved from either the virus or the mixer.

the clock rate in the mixer has no "auto" function and so mutes and flashes up a clock error on the screen when the clock doesnt match.

different software must set the clock at different frequencies and it also depends on the order which I power up the gear, makes the clocks change.

I wish I could dissable the usb audio but keep the usb midi intact.

I guess ill have to buy a midi interface and run the virus from that.
Midex 8's -- any known issues with the virus as there is one on SOS ads which im interested in ?
