Minimal tech question
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpCnDSfLCtc
How do I make that sound from the buildup/Break section inbetween ? its like a wood block, blip sorta sound... Its very common in minimal... I am trying to make minimal and cant figure out how to make that sound on the virus.. Pls help.. Thanks :) |
Any info on the exact minute/second when that sound kicks in?
I don't seem to be able to identify it as a "wood block" sound but those sounds are generally either samples or a hollow wave (like full square) through a closed lowpass with an envelope (fast attack, fast decay, no sustain) opening it something more than a half |
Hi...i guess my description sucks...but anyway..its the sound that starts at 25 seconds and goes through till the end...is that a square wave ??
thanks... |
You mean this kind of sound? http://www9.zippyshare.com/v/37515440/file.html
(sloppy playing for the win) If you mean that, I used a square wave (and a tiny bit of saw because i liked the timbre). |
Yup..thats the sound...hmm..that simple huh....
U have also opened up the reverb decay on it right, along with some delay ? Thanks a lot... :) |
In that snip I only used a tiny bit of reverb to give it a bit of ambient (little reverb send, diminished reverb time) and the classic delay (tweaked a bit in order to make it resemble the demo track you posted).
The sound itself is pretty straightforward Osc 1 is set to pulse (max pulsewidth to produce a square), reverting it back a little towards the saw can make it sound a bit sharper. No need to have more than 1 osc for that particular sound (osc balance all the way to the left), but experimenting with Osc 2 and the digital waves could bring interesting timbre results. Filters are set in SER6 mode, filter 1 is LP (you can use filter 2 in HP mode and then tweak filter balance to give that highpass effect before the sound kicks in) and filter balance is all the way to the left because I wanted the "main part" of the sound. Filter 1 cutoff is closed, Filter 1 Env Amount is quite high but not full and the envelope itself is straightforward - A=0 / D=46 / S=0 / R = 46 (matching the Decay time - useful if you set the Amp envelope accordingly and you don't think you can play all the notes the same way). Character:analog boost (with standard settings and 50%+ amount) can boost the lows a bit but I didn't find it necessary. Ambient/time FX as desired (of course there's delay in the demo to give that commonly used effect in minimal techno). I can of course provide the patch but it's nothing esoteric ;) |
Hey Roby.
Thanks so much for the help... I was able to recreate the sound... I hear this sound in so many tracks... Thank You :) |
